I made this yesterday for St Patrick’s Day. I’d never made any soda bread before and it was delicious!! I made it for my parents too, my mum couldn’t get enough of it. My granda was from Ireland so she had memories of eating it when she was young and it was wonderful to be able to make something so meaningful and delicious. Thank you! 😊

I had a Granny that was born in Ireland. She migrated to Australia in the 50s. Hence I’m an Aussie. She made Soda bread every time we visited. As well as tatie bread. I lost her in my early twenties and only had one or maybe two lessons on Soda bread. I wish I was more interested. She used to make it on a griddle not in the oven. When I tried this in my late twenties it wasnt anything like my Granny’s. Anyway I got a little disappointed. But here I am 58 doing your recipe and yippee I did it. Although Granny never used an egg I asked her to go with it with me and help. Lol. It’s beautiful. Although yes she used whole meal flour too I just had white on hand and I’m very happy. Thankyou beautiful for this recipe. Your the only one I found with butter just like Granny’s. Bless ya. 🌻

Gemma! I'm Irish American and love all of your recipes. All of your baking is amazing. I been making your recipes and have found you to be a great teacher! My all time favourite is when you and your mom's apple crumble. Absolutely yummy!!! And of course your scones are the best:) Thanks so much for helping to motivate me to bake more!

Since I have watched and analysed this video I have stopped buying bread instead I make it myself every week now and it always yealds together beautifully I am a very passionate baker and this is such a fun, easy, quick and inexpensive bread thank goodness that it's hard to find this bread in any English stores otherwise I wouldn't have an excuse to bake it. And I know that they say that "us english people hate Irish people" but personally I've never met such friendly amazing passionate bakers as the Irish. I would love to thank my Irish food teacher Mrs Mooney for giving me the amazing ability of how to be a successful baker I'm super proud. 💟🍴🍫🍦

I've never heard that in my life and I'm almost 40 years old... what a sad group of people you've had around you to hear them say that. Most of the English have Irish in them anyway so it would be pretty daft to say that.

@@biggerbolderbaking you didn't give what the oven temperature is that you turn it down to after the high temp. for 15 min. Would you be so kind to post here. You sound like my mam (Co. Carlow) and dad (Co. Sligo) I'm 82 so they are long gone. Nice to hear the brogue again. God bless.

The first time I tasted homemade soda bread was from mum's best friend from Ireland. I've never made Irish soda bread before and want to get it perfect the first time round so apologies to Gordon, Jamie and Delia but I've chosen Gemma's foolproof Mamma's recipe and being Irish goes highly in her favour, I feel strongly inclined to follow her lead. You had me at the history part of scoring the bread. I'm sold. 🌞

Is marvelous!!! I made it today and my husband who is from Irish ancestry could not stop eating it. I barely could taste it. He ate it freshly baked, he toasted it, soaked it in lamb juices and toasted it at nigh t time and slathered in butter in it. He told me that he likes this recipe the best and to keep it coming. I will. I also loved it too and hope to be able to eat more of it in a close future... ;-D Thanks to the Fairies for not cursing my bread. I released them of course!!! Comeback to this video after a few years. This video is still my favorite ❤️❤️❤️. I personally think that we should add a little bit of sugar to this bread, just to give nice flavor

Its interesting to see the combination of the old Irish beliefs with the newer christian ones in the story though it kinda surprised me like we gotta bless the bread ok fine sure, and now RELEASE THE FAIRIES xD

Catholicism contains a lot of pagan traditions. And one of my favorite things in most religious/spiritual traditions (whether I believe them or not) is that they often contain a grain of truth. Sodabreads do fail if you don't make a cross and poke the quarter pieces. But it's for rising purpose rather than blessings. :P

Right?! Blessing the bread as you score it so it doesn't explode when it rises is a very Old World religious thing to do. Releasing the faeries so they don't curse your bread is a very adorable, Old World Irish thing to do. I absolutely love it 💚🇮🇪☘️ That bread looks delicious, and God bless Mammy Stafford, indeed!!! I'm gonna have to make this with my Dublin coddle the next time I make it 💚

Oh thank heavens it doesn't need kneading. I also find it really hilarious that right after a what is essentially a Catholic blessing it's followed up with, "but don't forget the fairies though, they will mess this whole thing up."

Be careful of sneering at the wee folk. We no longer see them due to a low frequency projected around the earth. I am Celt. In Scotland we fly flags to honour the fairies who assisted the ancestors in battle. I now reside in canada and i miss the ancient lore. Tx Gemma for the blessing of the bread-it has made me reminisce of more poetic days!!

A college pal made us soda bread - first time I had heard of it. Fast forward decades, to the 20-teens -I learn to bake. Just recently I see this recipe suggested on you tube. So I tried it, but I realized my whole wheat flour was old. I added 2.5 Tablespoons of sugar to the recipe against bitterness, and crossed my fingers, as well as the bread. (Not forgetting the Fair Folk). I hope you don't mind that I LOVE it with the sugar added. I made it the next week according to the recipe, but it didn't reach me. No waste! My brother-in-law happily claimed it. Thank you, Gemma, for a recipe a lot of my family enjoys. And for a happy memory for me of faintly-sweet soda bread.
