the reason ben isn't singing/playing along is simple; this is called a song swap. amongst songwriters it is very common. you don't noodle around on a song you've just heard for the first time - you sit silently and listen to the world the other writer is painting for you. in part 2, ben will play one of his.

I saw Guy Clark back in the early 90s. He talked about writing songs. He told a story about a man who asked him how he wrote such great songs. Guy's response was that he wrote about what happened to him in life. The inquiring would be songsmith replied, "Nothing happens to me!" Guys response: "Then don't write songs."

Lost Dog Street Band brought me to Gems on VHS and the rise and fall with and without her. Watching two young lovers starting off in a trailer croon our anthems to the American tales of love and woes, to Bens heart break as he fell back into the bottle and bottomed out onto the spoon separated from her, shirt tattered and eyes sunken in on “using again”. I remember trying to write songs in a garage in bum fuck Egypt California, with a long time friend and we both were broken at the time, up all night and soulless when Ben released “I will Rise”. I played it for my friend Louie that morning on the monitors and some hope came back in both our eyes. Just enough to keep going and maybe think about putting ourselves back together. Documenting these journeys from Ben to Hayden and both their struggles brings addiction, music, and the joy we find in our suffering that much closer to home. This is the second time I’ll thank you.. Gems and your artists. Finally, I have an ex stuck in Colorado still trying to live but living to die and it’s heartbreak every time she falls again. She could be gone tomorrow as is the life of an addict. Either way It’s good to see both of these guys still breathing. Anyway, Anyone that reads this.. don’t stop fighting. - From a Southern California Junkie trying to get it right.. May we all one day “Rise”.

I think people connect with these two particular men because when they perform their songs you can easily see, feel, and hear that their music comes from depths that most cannot reach. These two do some deep dark diving into themselves and they come out with the ugly truths that we all can relate to. I do not ever get the sense that they “perform” necessarily, but that they are most sincerely sharing their pain with us. They are both truly special writers and artists.

This song really hit home... I’m a 33 year old recovering heroin addict from Sacramento, California... I heard this song for the first time while I was sitting in the hospital waiting for heart surgery. I spent 2 long month’s in Sutter General downtown Sacramento. I had pneumonia and endocarditis, which is an infection in your heart valves, that is usually caused by iv drug use. I spent the greater part of the last 10 years slamming dope. I’ve been clean for a little over 4 months now. Now I try to summon strength to labor thru this fight trying to live drug free. There really is light at the end of the tunnel. Fortunately I’m still here. Stay strong everyone.

Crazy how heroin makes soo much sense to an active user and yet no sense at all at the same time. It’s like your first serious relationship, you get addicted to the emotions you discover and crave the intensity of them while refusing to acknowledge their destructiveness. Makes it so hard to want to pull yourself out of what makes sense when it’s your first taste of emotional reciprocation. I never thought I’d hear someone illustrate the feeling with words so accurately until I heard this song. Going on 5 years clean now and this makes me weep like I’m going on 5 hours. God bless you brother👊🏻

Personally, I think this is one of the best songs ever written, lyrically. Every single line in this song is GOLD! Freaking GOLD! And the emotion in his voice is raw and honest and vulnerable. I've watched this video so many times and get chills every time. As a songwriter he's in the 1%.......when he wants to be. I'd put his best songs up there with Townes Van Zandt, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan. He's really freaking talented!!!!! I beat heroin 7 years ago. I hope he stays sober this time. Sure he has something to offer the world but its selfish to say "get sober so WE can hear great music" I hope he chooses his art because it is a way to heal. And its a way to learn even more about yourself. You can grow! That other shit offers none of those things. Useing is like that stupid Adam Sandler movie.....Click.....is that it? The one with the remote control? Everytime you use its like hitting pause on your life and if you do it enough you eventually realize that a large, very large, portion of your life was wasted. Those moments resulted in no kind of growth. Im gonna stop. Theres only one person in this world we really owe anything to and thats YOURSELF. So be kind to yourself. This man has a real gift and he owes it to himself to take it as far as it can go! STAY CLEAN!!!!!!!!!!!
