@@thedragonadvances Nah, his rankings were incorporated into the final scores, but because he's such an outlier (and because the consensus around ttar/skarm is pretty strong) his opinion hasn't shifted the results very much. It's like dropping a single ice cube into a pot of boiling water - it does reduce the temperature a bit, but you probably wouldn't notice the difference if you put your hand in it.

I feel like it's definitely safe to call them both "premier" because they can excel at different things. For example, mons like Tyranitar and Salamence carry fire coverage mainly for Skarm, while Swampert doesn't mind coming in on that. They play different enough where one does not outclass the other, whereas every special wall has to contend with Blissey.

Miltank is definitely underrated in gen 3. Being a cleric/setup sweeper in the same set is very nice roll compression. I think it works great on rest spam teams with suicune and Snorlax.

​@InsertFunnyThingHere Curse, depending on the set, it runs Heal Bell/Coverage, Milk Drink, Curse, and a choice of attack. With Some SpD investment and it's naturally high bulk it can difficult to remove without any special weaknesses. Unfortunately taunt, encore, skarm, a choice bander, Steel/Ghost types, running out of heal bells, it has a lot of problems and things that need to be dealt with to work.

Underrated uses of Magneton: -metal sound helps Special offense teams to beat Snorlax and last Mon Blissey. -endure salac is great as an anti offense measure. -good answer to CB metagross -underrated as a check to Zapdos and Aerodactyl. -forces Water types out in fear of bolt or hp grass I think the linear curve EV spreads with bulk are pretty outdated. Most ppl run modest magnet or timid to beat chipped skarms/opposing mags, with the occasional salac.

i know everyone else playing the tier disagrees but i find the recent skarmory hype really weird, i just don't consider it to be that crazy. it's extremely overpowered in a vacuum but the fact that magneton exists makes it completely unreliable, any good team that's weak to skarm will have a magneton so by running one on your team the only guaranteed value you get is one spike. outside of the magneton matchup it's obviously an excellent physical wall but any physical threat will either have ways to break through, tools to get around it or teammates to punish it, and spikes are very high impact but that's why there's a number of excellent spinners (many of which can comfortably 1v1 skarm), and any proper team lacking both magneton and a spinner will either ignore spikes or be offensive enough not to care about them. to me skarm feels similar to ttar, it's extremely high impact on the metagame and is one of the main factors to consider in teambuilding, but in terms of actually using it i don't feel it's all that viable. i'm not an elite player but i'm pretty decent at adv, and the more experienced i've gotten with the tier the less i've been using skarm, i just don't consider its tools to be valuable when the entire tier is focused on neutralising them. if i want to use skarm that means i want an answer to physical checks and i want spikes, but i could get more reliable spikes and an ok physical check by running forretress (it also gets trapped by mag but it's got a way better roll, mag doesn't always run hp fire anyway, and forrie at least has eq which it can use to catch mag on the way in), or since skarm necessitates a backup physical check anyway i could use those two slots to run a swampert and an aggro spiker like glalie

I play mostly offensive teams.. Blissey is a nightmare, ABR might be right about that one. Blissey and Skarmory both feel like fundamental pokemon for their respective defensive uses, but Skarmory feels so much easier to manage because the trap just easily works on it. There's no need to get a sub for your magneton, no worry about getting hit with a move on the switch, you just do it and it happens and you're happy. And even if you don't or your team can't, skarmory actually gets chipped down by moves, since protect chip is its healing. Blissey can just come in and softboiled and repeat this over and over. Playing physical offense feels so much more manageable than playing special offense.

Yes but it goes deeper than that. I think mag is very good but you don't want to run it on every team. If you trap and kill skarm it usually still gets one spike, and takes another teamslot from you for running mag. You can run mag + spin, which is solid against skarm but limits your teambuilding a lot as you are now spending two teamslots. (There are not many viable MagDol teams, and they usually have a bad matchup into non-skarm teams). And that does not count the fact you can get reverse trapped by people baiting the mag with skarm and swapping into dugtrio, which if it happens often costs you the game. Like I said, I do think mag is good overall but I also think skarm is the best mon in the game. (Although it is very close to ttar, and I can see an argument for Blissey in S tier as well.)

@@DantinozMC Wow that is an eerily similar amount of experience to what I have (3500 games, I kinda fluctuate from 1400ish if I just keep showing up and playing without trying hard, and 1600-1700 if I'm really focused for awhile). Idk, I don't disagree that skarm is really good and really central, but it just feels.. possible to deal with, in multiple ways. Blissey can easily be just unbreakable, whereas even without a trapper, a metagross mashing into skarmory is eventually going to KO it.

@@brycematthew3115 true but Blissey doesn't get spikes. You make a lot less progress when Bliss gets in than when Skarm gets in. I would still probably rank Bliss #3 for it's ability to tank status, never die, and of course 1v9ing any special attacker, but skarm is too effective on too many teams to not be #1 imo. Spikes is generally the best playstyle in ADV, and I don't often see a valid argument to use any spiker other than skarm. Sandless often also wants Skarm, which is why I'd put Skarm over Tar, but that margin is razor thin and could go either way depending on how you look at it. (Sand + spike immune with protect also means skarm gets like 1.5x its healthbar each game, it is also really hard to kill without mag, which is why offense teams that don't run mag often need an entire roster (or 4-5 at least) mons that can hit Skarm for solid damage (mixoff for example). My S-A+ tier would be: Skarm > Ttar > Blissey > Swampert / Zapdos > Metagross

I feel lost when I can make no progress, so I think Blissey is crazy, and I don't mind it so much when I make progress and my opponent also makes progress, so I don't mind skarm. I'd rather be stepping on 3 layers of spikes as physical offense than facing a blissey that won't die as special offense.

I really think Zard is underrated. If at full health, it can tank a Gar tbolt and be in instant blaze range and be VERY dangerous. It invites in Blissey and tears it up with beat up. Blaze range overheat is the strongest move in the metagame barring boom. It takes out Pert with hp grass with minimal chip. It's unaffected by spikes. Because of blaze it likes taking damage. You can switch it in on wisps. All it needs is a couple rock resist parterns and a partner with ice beam to take out mence.

As someone who doesn't keep up with the metagame, why isn't Alakazam ranked? The Smogon analysis for Gen 3 Alakazam says "...Alakazam has the most options of almost any special sweeper in the game...is a force to be reckoned with, and should always be considered when making a team." Are the Smogon write-ups just hilariously out of date? I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but the difference is just so stark.

Just out of date i think I imagine it's just hard to be a frail mono psychic in a tier where Ttar, Bliss, Meta, Snorlax etc all spong your stab attack and the only mon you hit super effectively in the whole tier is Gengar (who could still kill you with explosion or destiny bond)

I agree w/ the person above. As an gen 3 alakazam fan, i find his biggest weakness is his lack of good opportunities to actually do meaningful things, bc so many ppl resist psychic, his coverage options r low base power for someone so frail, and its really hard to switch in. One reason why gengar is so good is bc of his 3 immunities + toxic and spikes immunity, he has a million switch in opportunities, and can still make progress w/ utility like wisp, taunt, or preserve momentum with boom or destiny bond, while dealing respectable special dmg. Alakazam does have encore, knock off and trick, but those r considerably more situational given the fact that its real hard for zam to switch in. Hes very, very high risk, with low to medium reward, so to most, hes not worth using.

The analyses are out of date. Tyranitar's omnipresence, Dark typing, and access to Pursuit render Alakazam unviable or a matchup fish. If you don't want to fish, you're forced to run Focus Punch or Dugtrio alongside it.

Three options really - 1) Be super cautious with your skarmory at first, either roar or switch out first turn if it has Pokemon which indicate a magneton (Slaking, fighting lead, Snorlax, two dragon dancers, tend to be the main tells on ladder) 2) Be aggro and accept getting trapped in exchange for getting a layer of spikes down, for this to succeed you need to keep up the tempo and basically never give them the opportunity to spin, or punish them hard if they try. 3) "Matchup fish" and start using a Skarm with hidden power ground, or double swap to Dugtrio. If you really want some catharsis and just want to crush and annoy Magneton users you can go Skarmory, Dugtrio(with sand attack) and then Porygon or Gardevoir with trace and sub + boost up and have some fun. Though that is definitely not a good team overall.

Not one pokemon is without counterplay in adv. Even SkarmBliss has answers. Your job as a teambuilder is to acknowledge individual mon weaknesses and have team support as a backup. If you depend on Skarm for spikes, ask yourself, what kind of teams are running mag? And prep the rest of your team to punish them.

Neither get Transform which on Mew is actually broken (imagine running a setup sweeper mew for lategame, but in the early game you can copy skarmory or forre for spikes). Mew also gets bulk up, it would be the only fast bulk up user with instant heal, it's like snorlax but a fast sweeper instead of a hax magnet. I could go on, but mew's greatest strength is that it can run multiple top of class sets and you can't really tell what it's running without risking a poke.

blissey is s tier for sure. it shapes the tier so much. several mons have sets just to kill blissey, and some mons are good because they can handle both of blissey and skarm at the same time (Charizard). The mon's existence just hard counters one of the most popular team archetypes, not to mention it absolutely decides matches by how it walls so effectively a team once the big physical attackers have been slain. it's a massive presence in post-turn 60 ADV matches, just like skarm. don't think it's as important as skarm and tar because spikes and sand shape ADV more than blissey's tankiness imo, but it's S or S- for certain

@ The biggest point to me is the way Blissey shapes team building. Mons carry fire type moves for Steels and Grass types, they carry Grass type moves for Water and Rock types, but Mons also carry entire moves for just Blissey. They carry Mons to counter just Blissey. If your team gets status or weakened early your Dug may not even beat it anymore and your best option may be to trade 1 or more Mons to wear it down. What Mons can beat both Suicune and Salamence other than Blissey? Blissey is also maybe the best status spreader in the tier other than Skarm. Blissey can spend whole turns clicking moves like Aromatherapy or Wish and get no benefit from it personally bc it’s that good.
