Gene Wilder was an actor who had a wide range. He played in many of the Mel Brooks movies, which are all comedies. You absolutely have to react to Blazing Saddles, but be aware, it was a product of its time, and its go was to confront racism with humor. Wilder has played opposite Pryor on many occasions, and they are always magic together.

Richard Pryor was Mel Brooks original choice to play sheriff Bart. But due to Pryor's history of a particular type of arrest the studio claimed he was uninsurable, and refused to approve financing with him as the star. But considering it was the 70's I personally call BS on that excuse.

Gene is the king! I see everyone is telling you he worked with writer/director Mel Brooks. He said that out of all the years working together, they had 1 fight. Gene wanted a dance number in a movie and Mel didn't think it would work. The scene is in the movie and its hilarious. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a movie you will never get tired of watching. Johnny Depp did a reboot of the movie and made himself creepy as hell, lol. Remember Richard Pryor telling the prison story? Stir Crazy. 😄

Gene's Original Wonka is definitely the best. That and Young Frankenstein were two of my favorites growing up as a kid. Love his other work as well. He also was a great advocate for ovarian cancer for decades. One of his wives, Gilda Radner passed away from that and she was more than a decade younger, they had been trying to have kids and then she got diagnosed. I believe he took time away from his career to be with her and then for some time afterwards. It is also something I think reporters were asked not to discuss with him but I can't recall it exactly.💛

Thank you for keeping this man's legacy alive in this video. He's gone now almost 10 years but never forgotten. I've seen all the mivies mentioned, you should check them out. They are timeless. Gene Wilder is one that can never be duplicated, there won't ever be an actor quite like him and his soft spoken demeanor yet that same ability to flip on a dime, freak out, abd go right back to calm afterward. 💛 I watched Willy Wonka as a kid, about 5 yrs after it came out maybe? The soundtrack is amazing! That film cemented it's place in American pop culture as well. References are made to this day relating to the film. Blazing Saddles was funny, but for a younger, more sensitive audience today it would never have been made. So if you do watch it Jay, keep in mind the times it was filmed in like some others have mentioned. Gene's wife, Gilda Radnor, was a comedienne who many of us old fogies remember from SNL. Also, the chemistry Wilder had with Richard Pryor was amazing. Those two had me in stitches more times than I can count. Great video, great reaction 👏

Here I am again Mr three comment guy.. Haha... Yeah man Gene is one of those actors that I don't know, I don't really get into who's the best at what.... But he definitely brought something to the screen that will never be matched, that is for certain. Thank you for this it definitely brought back a lot of memories. Gene hideaway of being improvisational unable to fly off the handle in many directions in the best way! He also has a very very sensitive aside to him that brings his acting full circle. On my way to the patreon I can't imagine you doing Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory but man even if you remember bits of it? This is a rewatch for sure. Unbelievable story, not to mention the execution of the film as a whole. 💛

Willy Wonka was one of those movies that played on free TV on a regular basis in the 70's/80's (like Wizard of Oz), so I've seen it a lot. I've also read the books of Willy Wonka (after seeing the movie). I love it. I'd easily watch it again any time. Its really embedded in pop culture and you pretty much know any movie reference you make to a Gen Xer, they will get it.

Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor movies, both together and seperately, were another part of the blessings of growing up Gen X. Also, I've already mentioned it before and I'm seeing others mentioning it as well... "Blazing Saddles" is an absolute must. Richard Pryer helped write the movie and it was directed by the great Mel Brooks, who's movies are known for their ridiculous humor. The racial humor of "Blazing Saddles" was pretty shocking, but just like TV shows such as "All in the Family" and "The Jeffersons" it was meant to break down the vestiges of prejudice... It was just a rated R level of racial humor, when most of the American public were only accustomed to the G and PG levels on television... It's truly one of the funniest comedies of all time.🧡

Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory was the first Gene Wilder movie I saw but not even close to being the first movie I ever watched. I first saw that film in the 3rd or 4th grade so I watched a lot of movies before that. I have good memories of watching Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles with my dad when I was in my 20's. Young Frankenstein was one of his favorite Mel Brooks movies. I watched See No Evil, Hear no Evil when I was a kid. It's a good movie but I liked Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory more.

I think ehat i like about Gene's freakouts that make them more believable is that they arent smooth. He doesn't just scream out a seamless line of dialog woth an Oscar-winning facial expression. He dtutters & sputters & pauses, like hes ACTUALLY trying to figure out how to put his thoughts into words in THAT moment. You know - like someone freaking out in real life

The original Willy Wonka is the best one. Definitely recommend it. The remakes were OK, but not as "magical". Maybe that's because the remakes came out after I was already grown. But I've watched Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory hundreds of times yet I've only seen the Johnny Depp remake once and haven't seen the latest one at all. It's like The Wizard of Oz. Even though they may be dated, none of the remakes will ever match the magic of those original movies. Gene Wilder was married to Gilda Radner. She was part of the original cast of Saturday Night Live, when SNL was still funny. My favorite skit she did was playing Roseanna Roseannadanna. Gene Wilder was in many comedies throughout his career. He had a very dry humor, almost as if he wasn't ever really trying to be funny. But he was funny none-the-less. Blazing Saddles was hilarious.

Before you see “Young Frankenstein”, and I really hope you do, listen to a song titled “Chattanooga Choochoo”. It was recorded in 1941 by Glenn Miller and his orchestra. It predates the movie by decades, but it was a very familiar song to the audience at the time. Trust me!

These scenes the creator of the Gene Wilder documentary includes don't include much context. He just tosses you into the middle of something that is going on, but for anyone who hasn't seen these films, you miss all the context of what was happening up to that moment. Of course, it's very hard to include a lot of a film in a short documentary.
