In my opinion, the 1977 live version is undeniably the best. It was weeks before his death but by the grace of God Elvis' vocal were beyond phenomenal. I watch it and am astounded how far down he reached in to his soul on the vocals.

Don't listen to warren. Sounds like a hater. Elvis' voice never left him. If he was ashamed, he wouldn't have willingly went on national TV. His 1977 version of How Great Thou Art is such a powerful, otherworldly, EPIC performance!!! His absolute best performance of the song!!!!!

@@MysterySoul101 In the 77 performance he was a mentally out of control drug addict that had lost sight and control of his own physical AND mental stability, The mentally fit Elvis from 56 into the early 70s was VERY conscious and self aware, and took great care of how he appeared and was perceived by the public, He would NEVER have wanted the world to see him in the mental and physical condition that he had spiraled into in 77. TELL ME., If you had the opportunity to meet with the Elvis of 1969 and show him his future recorded 1977 performance, and you asked him. "Elvis would you like the world to see you and remember you in this condition? WHAT DO YOU THINK ELVIS'S ANSWER WOULD BE???/ his answer would be an emphatic NO!!

Elvis started in gospel his gospel Albums not only went gold but won 3 Grammys. Another great one is "He Touched Me". His mother wanted him to be a gospel singer Elvis was turned down by JD Sumner when Elvis tried out at 15 years old for JD' s gospel quartet. When Elvis became famous he hired JD and his group to sing back up that is who you now hear behind Elvis. And the very man you hear singing the low bass is JD Sumner. I am an Elvis fan but enjoy other artists music. One of my favorites is Josh Groban’s “ You Raise me Up” also “Some Where You Are”. He is a Baritone but his voice can hit higher notes for tenors. He also got to substitute for Andrea Bochelli doing a duet with Celine Dion. She also did a duet with Hologram Elvis’s “If I Can Dream”.

Elvis was raised in full gospel church in Mississippi where the music was high worship gospel and heavily influenced by the black gospel music which he was very close to. In his concerts fans would hold up large signs, “The King”, he would say, “There is only One King and that is Jesus Christ.”

Please listen to the How Great Thou Art version that Elvis did just 8 weeks before his death 1977! It has been said by many people even that were close to Elvis that it seemed Elvis knew that his time on earth was coming to an end and the power of the way he sang it really comes through. He even improvises the words and says "How Great I Think You Are" in the song. Such a powerful version! I guarantee you will be moved by it.

As long as you appreciate Gospel music I have a recommendation for another singer. His name is David Phelps. He is a Christian vocalist who raises the rooftops wherever he performs. David sings some very select secular music like Whitney Houston's legendary song "I Have Nothing". David is able to sing this in the same key as Whitney Houston's! That song and his "No More Night", Live in Concert, would be my request. Even though the Holiday season is past, many reactors will first do "O Holy Night", a beautiful Christmas song. Elvis has very many gospel recordings. He was raised in the Assembly of God Church from the time he was able to walk, and also, when people said he was the King, he replied that there was only one King and that was Jesus Christ. If you search You Tube you can find many gospel recording that he made. He did one of the Ed Sullivan show back in the 50's, Peace In The Valley. You should check it out.
