I definitely agree with the catch can point. Yes, it is good that it catches oil so it doesn't cake in the intake of the engine, but they made for drag racing, they only work when they're cold, for short times. Once the catch can warms up, it doesn't condensate oil and it goes through anyway. Either vent the PCV vapors to an atmospheric can that doesn't recirculate, or what I did was install an exhaust evacuation set up, which uses the exhaust vacuum to pull it with the exhaust

The gunk that fell out of the catch can at the end of the pour is the evidence you need. The problem is no the oil itself, the issue is the burnt up residue of oil and gasoline, and soot that slowly but surely cokes up the air inlets for the combustion chambers over time (not sure about the technical names of the parts I just mentioned, not a car expert, but I did see a pretty good explanation video with animations and stuff haha), definitely worth it to get a catch can, even if the car lost a bit of oil over time, is not much, and your oil level has an indicator in the event that it did lose too much oil.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 11 ай бұрын
But there is no evidence to support that a catch can reduces that build up. I’ve seen the videos explaining why. But I have not seen anyone do a side by side comparison of 2 like engines one with and without to show the difference. Lots of theory is provided but not much actual evidence to support their use

Here’s the challenge of that video. How do you differentiate between a good catch can and a bad one? I have no clue and no videos out there on how to differentiate because know one knows. Most catch cans are not designed by engine guys. Some tuner yeah, but literally any shop can do minimal research on other systems, mill out a cup, put together some fitting and pipe and you have a catch can. What if the tap into the wrong spot? I’ve seen the bad side of catch cans. Ecoboost and supercharged engines going into limp mode for no reason. I personally think it’s more snake oil than anything and the risk is high of damage. I’m planning on removing mine. Just need someone without one so I can properly route my lines.

The point of a catch can (on direct injection vehicles) is to pull oil out of the PCV system (crank case vent system that gets vented into the intake) because the oil will cause carbon build up on the back of the valves. However, on port injection vehicles like the v8 raptors, a catch can is completely unnecessary because the injectors wash off the intake/valves and prevent that carbon from building up. Without a catch can your injectors will simply wash out that oil and it’ll get burned off with no adverse effects.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 2 жыл бұрын
This is yet another reason I’m not a fan. The general knowledge and recommendations you read say every vehicle needs one and they claim carbon build or oil build up in the intake. But not all engines will benefit from it. And here in the Raptor it’s a waste I think regardless
@ogdobber
@ogdobber 2 жыл бұрын
yes you are correct in regards to the valves, however the oil will vaporize and build up carbon in the intake plenum. I can show you a raptor intake with 300k (that didn’t have a catch can) and the carbon buildup in the intake is significant, at least .040 throughout the plenum and most definitely decreasing air flow and efficiency
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 2 жыл бұрын
Do you have a catch can engine with the same mileage? This is where the argument usually falls apart. Because no one does. I have a suspicion why. 🤔
@spikehockey
@spikehockey 2 жыл бұрын
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad there is plenty of evidence out there, to the point that Ford even issued them as a recall to fix old gen Ecoboosts. Newer gen solved it by adding port injection to wash the valving. Point is oil is getting in places it's. Not meant too due to blow by.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 2 жыл бұрын
I get that man. That’s the drawback of all engines. But there are no 300k miles truck with catch cans showing they helped decrease it. And that’s the main reason I won’t get one. And a ton of companies make kits and it’s hard to differentiate a good kit from a bad one. Too risky for me

@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad the evidence was right there in the bottom of your catch can, that nasty thick gunk. Over time that will build up on your valves. I run one on my car and my truck. The car catches oil but there isn't ever any build up or gunk in the catch can. Now on my 2017 f150 5.0 there seems to always be a little gunk at the bottom pending how hard I've driven it between oil changes. Me personally i think its more of a better to be caught with it than without it kind of thing long term wise just my opinion 🤷‍♂️
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 2 жыл бұрын
Nah man. First of all, catch cans catch moisture and oil. More water than oil and that’s the gunk you see at the bottom. 2nd, on the 6.2 v8 there is no benefit because of its valve design. See other post from a follower. Lastly, that oil passing through is normal. Some engines need it like the Rotary engines. On the Gen2 I had a friend run one on and take it to a tuner. They could literally see the truck pulling timing and loosing power with the catch can on. It was causing more harm than good. So again, your idea of rather safe than sorry. To me catch cans are a HUGE risk that I prefer not to take. There are good system out there I’m sure. But there are more bad, than good and anyone, even those shops with little engine experience, can and have released one and NONE OF THEM have backed up any of their claims of benefits. It’s always look at this oil we caught.
