I'm a medically retired US Marine (97-09) and I currently work as a gunsmith and firearms instructor. Firearms here in the US are very prevalent. Estimates range from 330 million to over 480 million guns here in the US. There is no way of knowing specifically as it is illegal for the government to maintain a registration of firearms owners as well as the fact that that it is perfectly legal for citizens to design and build their own weapon systems without government permission as long as the firearm is never sold or transferred to another individual. Every small town has at least one gunsmith and many larger towns and cities have dozens of even hundreds depending on the population. Many of us gunsmiths routinely design and build our own whether it is from scratch or even using "80%" receivers to complete the manufacturing process and assembled with commonly available parts kits. The US is a shining example of what the world in general should be like.

15:40 yes, all gun barrels flex when firing. A large part of firearm design is accounting for barrel harmonics
@Burnscar817 ай бұрын
The barrel of the gun moving like that when fired is commonly referred to as "barrel whip". It's actually quite common just not perceptible unless caught in slow-mo. Most rifles will have at a least small amount of barrel whip when fired.
@MrThankman3602 ай бұрын
Yea. Might be worse if it didn’t flex at all. Might warp or break.
@TheAngryCowGosMeow7 ай бұрын
15:30 The movement of the barrel when he fires is an example of barrel harmonics. Simplified, the excessive forces of a rifle calibre round going off (especially .50 BMG) creates a massive shock as soon as the round is ignited, making the barrel vibrate very rapidly, and create the whipping motion you see. The bullet itself is much slower than the vibrations, meaning the bullet leaves the barrel AFTER the barrel is in motion (just barely after, the bullet is gone by the time even the small wobbles are visible. Split seconds here). Tuning barrel harmonics is attemting to make the bullet leave the barrel at the exact same angle, every single shot. If you watch slow motion footage of even mid-calibre rifles, there is a significant amount of wobble. This is a simplified version, theres a ton of math that goes into it from barrel composition to the type of powder being used.

Yes! Finally, someone who understands. It is a little known fact that Taglioni, designer and engineer for Ducati in their glory years, had tuning fork holes in the 750 SS L Twin race bike frames. When the engine was tuned to peak output, the tuning forks were inserted to ensure the frame was harmonically balanced to the engine. Small sections of excess steel would be ground off the frame at strategic points (under seat, excess footpeg mount steel etc) until the forks rang true.

A couple of things. First, the AK-50 does still have a few function issues. V3 (which we just saw) doesn't have a safety or bolt hold open on empty. Basically, there are a lot of little things to correct before we can get a production version, let alone a full auto version. Second, the "barrel wobble" is called "barrel harmonics" and you, with the correct equipment, can use that data to make adjustments to your rifle to make it more accurate. Third, when it comes to gunsmithing, the primary function is repair and mild modification. I'd say that at least 70% of "Gunsmiths" are "parts replacers". Kinda like most Automobile Mechanics today. When it comes to making bank as a gunsmith, you basically need to be well known, well loved, well versed in geometry, metalurgy, welding, and, to a certain extent, engineering.

@singingwolf3929Ай бұрын
@vast9467 muzzle breaks can affect barrel wobble. That being said, virtually every long gun is gonna have a bit of barrel wobble. It's part of the reason "free floating" barrels exist. And, why, a lot of long-distance shooters often have something between the barrel and the stock/foregrip to reduce the wobble or tune it to a predictable point. Research barrel harmonics and you'll see what I'm talking about.
@zackmuller20777 ай бұрын
On the slow-mo part of the video where you see the barrel flex like that, all firearms do that to some degree. It's called barrel harmonics and is the reason why no weapon has the same accuracy even though they are made with the same materials and design. You can design it to have better harmonics to some degree, but doing so will generally cost more and is one of the reasons why most military firearms are 2 MOA rather than sub MOA.

But the big question is, would you say is it a DMR or a sniper rifle? Because right now it’s a semi automatic like the Barrett M82 anti-material rifle so what category of weapon does this belong in?
@gaminjunctiontv55347 ай бұрын
Yes the barrel flexes. Even the M2 .50 cal machine gun has a whip action on the barrel. That is from the force of the round travelling down the barrel.

I bought a case of 20 round fifty caliber magazines about a decade ago, still sitting my shop, and a fifty-caliber barrel with a bit of surface rust on it from sitting. I guess it's time to build an AK-50 and actually test fire it, then "fam-fire" some magazines full. I reckon I'd better reach out and get a trunnion properly made and heat-treated. I've got about fifty years of machining experience but no heat-treating on anything quite as large and heavy. Thanks Brandon, you're a real inspiration for an "old man" here. Matt at Demolition Ranch did a "not so serious" video with the AK-50 recently, which Original Human reacted to before Brandon's video. Brandon (the AK guy) is partners/friends with Matt at Demolition Ranch and he does podcasts with Donut Operator (a former SWAT team cop), Angry Cop (a former Army Drill Instructor and cop), and the Fat Electrician regularly where they talk about military history, guns, politics, and military stories. Brandon is not a veteran, but he's friends with a lot of them. He also recently lost a seat in Congress by only 407 votes, which might demand a recount but definitely shook things up.

As for the question about is the barrel supposed to bend like that, all rifles actually do that. Thats why free floating barrels are best for accuracy. It helps ensure the barrel will reverberate the same way every time, getting you a tighter grouping at distance.

Just a few notes from an American firearms enthusiast. Texas actually was a separate country but was annexed into the United states in 1845. The term "assault rifle" specifically refers to a select fire rifle (can switch between semi and full auto) that uses small caliber ammunition. The size of the magazine is irrelevant. The barrel shaking is absolutely normal. It's actually very bad when the barrel doesn't shake because that means it's too rigid and will likely fracture.

They did a follow up and fixed the barrel bounce, within tolerance and "fine" but still. Turns out they used a standard AK muzzle break which pushes some gas vertically but the 50 is so stable and heavy it just doesn't need it. Running a vertically symmetrical break corrected it and aside from fixing the bounce makes it hip fire like a dream somehow.

In case you are wondering, the muzzle break was also scaled up from the ak-47. The muzzle break on the ak-47 has a larger vent on the top to counter the barrel raise from full auto. Since the ak-50 is not full auto, it wasnt needed, so in the future version, Brendon switched the muzzle break to a purely side to side muzzle break.
@GoldenknightHalo2 ай бұрын
So yes and no that is called barrel whip, this is where for fractions of a second the barrel will whip but the reason why it’s so extreme here is because of the muzzle break on his gun this is a standard Ak muzzle and all he did was 3d print a bigger one for the ak-50 but it turns out the Ak-50 doesn’t have that much recoil he covered this in a later video hoped this helped
@xaxac855 ай бұрын
So Brandon just released an updated video on the AK-50 addressing the barrel flexing. Its due to the up scaled AK-47 muzzle break that vents gas to the side and up. He has since fixed the issue and yeah barrel flex is normal.

Hi Ryan. On the question 15:50 you asked, though I'm not an expert, heard of barrel harmonics, which give more accuracy if fine tuned. Modern accurate weapons supposed to bend like shown here. For example PSG90 rifle have optimal barrel size to optimize better barrel harmonics. However not sure about weather this is vibrating too much or not.
