Not sure if anyone really mentioned it, but the reason the salt water one didn't rust as much is because of the lack of oxygen in the water. Metals and coatings are normally tested via salt spray. Rust is Iron oxide, so the lack of oxygen inhibits the rust quite a bit. If you added aeration or did a salt water spray the results would be different.- Small edit- ASTM B117 is the testing methods for metallic objects and coatings and simulates a highly corrosive enviroment!

Impressive durability test for the AR-15! It’s always fascinating to see how well this platform handles extreme conditions. Goes to show why it’s such a reliable choice for so many gun owners.

@andrewvarcho3963Сағат бұрын
The reason the saltwater did so well was because it was just salt water. With the pond, it was sitting in mud and muck at the bottom of it. If you actually put it at a beach in saltwater and had to deal with the sand and other detritus, it probably wouldn't have run as well either.
@leonhart2452Сағат бұрын
On the muddy one, there is probably enough mud in the chamber and in the locking lugs that are preventing a round from chambering. The pond one is probably the same way.

the one in the pond probably rusted more because it had fresh access to more oxygen, while the salt water one used all the oxygen in the box, its not water that creates rust, its oxygen. the water just helps the proses along
@Ivanovitch28852 сағат бұрын
The crunchy, glassy parts of dirt and mud will choke any firearm. There are a lot of factors involved about dunking weapons and ammo into awful things, but it's those little crystals of sand that will stop it. You could probably drop a rifle into a poop pit and it would still run because it wouldn't have the silicate in it. Merry Christmas Scott and keep doing what you're doing!

Interesting results Scott. I'm not too suprised by the ice AR. However, the pond and Salt water results are surprising, you are correct about the White stuff being crystalised salt. The mud AR didn't surprise me at all. Great video as always. Maybe for your next video you can clean up the two ARs that struggled most and then film the results, if you get them working to a some-what decent standard/working condition... i'd like to see that.

@Baltimoreed55 минут бұрын
Another test would be to put one under your house in the crawlspace but not buried just laying on the dirt where moisture and air could wreck it. I would say have one out in the woods for 100 days but you couldn’t safely leave a firearm unattended. Ive seen a 1911 that was laying out in a desert environment exposed to the elements and the exposed side looked ok but the dirt side was severly corroded. Entertaining vid Scott.
