My Italian grandmother came here through Ellis Island in the 1920’s. Couldn’t speak a lick of english. Moved to Boston to and sadly lost her husband shortly after giving birth to my father and aunt. God bless her. She figured it out. Found a job and learned english. The strongest woman I ever knew.

My Grandfather came here the same way, he got sponsored, got a job and my grandmother came here 5 years later and then they had 8 children . One of the things I remember him saying was how great America was and how grateful he was to be here. I also remember him telling my parents ,aunts and uncle’s to talk to us kids in English . Back then there was no welfare just hard work. He was a bricklayer in Rhode Island.

Agree. my Italian grandparents came here legally and had to go through Ellis Island also. They raised their children to be proud AMERICANS . The big difference between then and now concerning immigration is , today's immigrants want Americans to confirm to their nationality instead of them becoming American.

She sounds like a truly special lady. Buffalo NY also has a large Italian population that holds an Italian festival annually. Great time, great food (of course) and great people. The streets are lined with Italian and American flags alternately. And if you can say more than 5 words in Italian, that makes you an “Honorary Italiano”. But if you can actually speak the language, you become a “Paisano”! 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃 But when all is said and done, everyone is first and foremost American! This gentleman is 💯 right. You have to learn the language first, assimilate to this society second and ambrace this great nation before the nation ambraces you. We have a duty as immigrants to show respect to the law and the way of living by at least learning the language, and after that, many doors will open. Do those countries NOT get annoyed nor hold foreigners accountable to learn their language? Last time I checked locals do get upset. Nobody is hand-holding them to aid them with their grocery shopping, to take examinations, etc. So, what really is the difference? The answer is there is none.
