My Italian grandmother came here through Ellis Island in the 1920’s. Couldn’t speak a lick of english. Moved to Boston to and sadly lost her husband shortly after giving birth to my father and aunt. God bless her. She figured it out. Found a job and learned english. The strongest woman I ever knew.

My Grandfather came here the same way, he got sponsored, got a job and my grandmother came here 5 years later and then they had 8 children . One of the things I remember him saying was how great America was and how grateful he was to be here. I also remember him telling my parents ,aunts and uncle’s to talk to us kids in English . Back then there was no welfare just hard work. He was a bricklayer in Rhode Island.

Agree. my Italian grandparents came here legally and had to go through Ellis Island also. They raised their children to be proud AMERICANS . The big difference between then and now concerning immigration is , today's immigrants want Americans to confirm to their nationality instead of them becoming American.

She sounds like a truly special lady. Buffalo NY also has a large Italian population that holds an Italian festival annually. Great time, great food (of course) and great people. The streets are lined with Italian and American flags alternately. And if you can say more than 5 words in Italian, that makes you an “Honorary Italiano”. But if you can actually speak the language, you become a “Paisano”! 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃 But when all is said and done, everyone is first and foremost American! (Unlike that other ethnic group that demands that we become like them because, in addition to refusing to respect our laws, they are also too lazy to learn English).

While stationed in Italy, I made it a point to learn the language of the locals, which really does “unlock the keys to the kingdom”! Will the locals laugh if you make a mistake? Absolutely yes, of course (but they’ll also love you for trying). One of the locals was always laughing at my efforts but I later found out that, behind my back, he talked nonstop about how much he really liked me and how impressed he was with me.

Lose your accent? Fuck Gene greedy ass Simmons. I’m second generation, I’m very much assimilated and speak English and Spanish extremely well as do most children of immigrants (both legal and illegal). I got to live this better life because both of my parents were willing to work long hours at two jobs each…sorry they didn’t have time to lose their accents because they were too busy busting their ass. Just because Simmons or Chaim Witz as he use to be known went years before ever visiting his birth country and forgot about where he came from doesn’t mean everybody else should. If you live peacefully and are willing to break your back to make an honest living for you and your family then that’s as American as it gets. God bless you all and God bless America.

Problem is, I'm often faced with having to deal directly with these illegal immigrants, they don't speak English (I don't speak Spanish) and there's definitely a communication barrier. I deal with toxic materials and it's frustrating not knowing if I communicated to them we'll enough to stay away from the products I apply. And, I'm 100% responsible. I am an immigrant myself, brought to this country illegally as a 12 year old kid , and not by choice. But once here, I learned the language in 1 year, I went to school, became a productive member of society, paid my taxes, and eventually obtained legal status and subsequently citizenship. This gentleman is 💯 right. You have to learn the language first, assimilate to this society second and ambrace this great nation before the nation ambraces you. We have a duty as immigrants to show respect to the law and the way of living by at least learning the language, and after that, many doors will open. This is my home now, and I love this great nation and the opportunities it gave me. To those coming here refusing to learn the language, know that you will always be looked at as second class until you learn the language. Learn it, it will change your life for the best!

Finish HS went to college while trying to form a great band, became a teacher! His story shows hard work and dedication can pay off. Nobody is hand-holding them to aid them with their grocery shopping, to take examinations, etc. So, what really is the difference? The answer is there is none. Being catholic and Jewish aren't nationalities either, but he mentioned those as well. Don't be an idiot, he never said Peurto Rico is a foreign country, he's talking about it in the context of being proud of your identity, but in the end being part of a melting pot.

My grandmother's father (and his brother) immigrated from Korenica, then in Yugoslavia, in 1905 and never returned to Europe. My grandfather's parents came from Los Ramones, Nuevo Leon, Mexico to escape Pancho Villa's reign of terror in 1915. The Villistas kept stealing all of their animals and food. Great Grandfather told my father "I am never going back. It's so much better here." We are still the greatest thing going. Let's keep it that way. Assimilate, you are coming here for a reason.🇺🇲
