RE hard-to-read images (census records, headstones, etc) ... try downloading the full image & opening in an image-viewing app. Some of them (I use FastStone) have the ability to change to black and white, sepia tone, adjust contrast, etc. I've done that when transcribing headstones and it helps in some cases.
@GenealogyTV8 ай бұрын
Yes. Especially for faint records, cranking the contrast and lowering the brightness in almost any program works.

I want to say thank you for all the helpful videos you share. I am now creating research notes starting with ancestors surrounding brick walls. This has helped confirm I have the correct 2x time great grandparents on one line. Basically it teased out an area where the grandfather was living which neither I nor Ancestry had cottoned on to and this returned his death when I then used that information in the card catalogue and drilled down. I've now obtained the death certificate, I only wish our UK death certificates were as informative as your US ones. Many thanks.

Hi Cousin, I thoroughly enjoy your videos. I have learned so much about the basics. With this video I discovered we are cousins. My 8th great grandparents are Sir Knight John Garrett and Elizabeth Ware (thru son William Garrett). It really is a small world. Keep making your instructional and informative videos. Thank you Jan Shannon

Someone in Family Search has tied royal links into many branches of my tree. I researched them all independently, and none of them are real. I’m American, royals did not get on ships and set up families in the new world in 1600. I gave up on Family Search accuracy years ago.

Awesome video as ever...definitely given me more food for thought when using Family Search...I to yes have tree there but not made so big due to fact it is a collaborative tree and people make changes and not always necessarily correct. What i did love was you showed the tree in the aspect of where people possibly could have come from...definitely interesting aspect to learning more where my ancestors came from...again thanks for the video on how to make Family Search work more for you when it comes to genealogy. 😊

I find the search function at FS better than other databases I use. Great for finding parents and to put in any date range you like (Ancestry take note). On the downside, the shared tree is full of rubbish.

Will be checking on a census record I found in Ancestry using the Fhl# but could not find indexed in FS. I know the image in on FS by searching for a neighbor. My thoughts on the ID#- I find I have to merge duplicates a lot, especially on my Norwegian ancestors, so the ID# can change. So not sure recording the number would be beneficial for me at least.

Interesting thought... good to know. I don't see merges on FS that often.

Thank you for all of your tips, it’s been very helpful. However, I’m looking for the 1900 Census for Quitman Mississippi. I’m looking for Zula Rodgers Graham and Jesse Graham. There’s a disconnect in finding some of there records before that time, those are my great grandparents and I can’t seem to find info before 1920 Census. Any suggestions? It’s so weird.

Try various spellings. Zula might Sula in the transcriptions, etc. try search the area for just the surname.

Connie I admit I stay away from Family Search as much as I can because it's just a hot mess… what is the easiest way of cross-referencing a family tree housed elsewhere like an Ancestry that you feel is pretty darn accurate with Family Search. I've tried a few times but I always get confused and lose my spot going back and forth. A bit off-topic but also asking the same for Geni and WikiTree because I'm also having the same issue.
@GenealogyTV8 ай бұрын
I suggest you use family search for hints and for record search because they have different records than on Ancestry sometimes. Additionally, sometimes you can read the records on family search easier than you can. Ancestry don’t give me wrong. I love Ancestry. My primary tree is on Ancestry ,but I do a lot of research on family search as well.
@saraschneider67817 ай бұрын
@@GenealogyTV But unfortunately if you don't have all of your branches connected to a family search, you won't get nearly as many relatives from Roots Tech as you should…I'm sitting at 30 currently.

Hello Connie! Thank you for this awesome video! I do have a question for you. It is in regards to the "set the preferred parents" tab. I just recently found my paternal father and I have added him as a parent but he was never my mom's spouse. Can I toggle back and forth with the "set the preferred parents" tab? If I follow my paternal father will I get notifications if I am in the other "preferred parent" mode? Thank you for your help!

I do not like the recent changes to Family Search. I find is DISTURBING that when my "live person, myself; has to see the "one of two, or one of three" when I go into doing family research. I preferred it to be "preferred spouse". Once I'm dead and am no longer alive to have to look at my still alive private account to where I am now forced to "deal" with ex's in my face. When a person is doing their genealogy they should have the ability to have it come up the way we want it to. If I'm forced to have to deal with it every time? Or to be reminded I'm just the "second wife"? I am thinking I may have to delete my account, and sever any ties with family search. I understand that there are people who think diffeeently than we do but the "Fathers Sex"? WHAT THE HECK? I'd my church going "woke". If you have a father, then they are a male. PERIOD. You might have two of them, or two moms. But to be mom or dad, DEPENDS on them being either female or male. Ya can't have a father that is a woman. Last I knew it was physically impossible to be a man and a woman at the same time.
