Good idea. I've had a Generac generator for 15 years and it has come in real handy when we least expected it. In fact, we are about to upgrade ours with a larger Generac to support a geothermal system we installed.
@brnmcc013 жыл бұрын
Look into HyperEngineering 'Soft start', you might not need a larger generator, unless you have a lot of kilowatts of aux heat strips. If you have gas at your place, then don't use aux heat strips for auxiliary heat. Doesn't make any sense to burn gas in a generator to produce electricity and then turn that electricity back into heat. You'd get 3x as much heat for the same amount of fuel, by just burning the fuel in a 96% furnace, than in a generator which is at best maybe 25% efficient at turning the fuel into usable electricity. If the compressor in your geothermal system is inverter driven true variable speed, then you dont need the soft starter. Inverter compressors have 0 inrush current, they start up very slowly.

Josh, @19:45 made perfect sense to me. Carry on. I hadn't thought about how to trigger a standby generator to run on off-grid solar with batteries, so good to know. Also, because internal combustion engines have a fairly narrow power band where they are most efficient, using yours to charge up batteries is brilliant. Rather than idling along with minimal output (and terrible efficiency), you can hit it hard, charge the batteries quick, then shut off until the batteries are almost empty.
