you have to get a residency in general surgery first then fellowship into cardiothoracic

No, now there are direct entry CT residencies and those are CRAZY competitive. I can't give you exact #'s but I know vascular & plastics (the other 2 direct entry programs) have like 1/3 of available spots as there are applicants. Not to discourage you bc if that's your dream you'll make it happen.

Yes. Being a full fledged surgeon can take a toll on life. 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 4-7 years surgery residency, 1-3 years of fellowship.
