That was literally the reason I didn't like the show. The horrid overuse of fake handheld shakeycam crap in particular made it so that I never watched enough to even care about anything in it, and really all I remember is a fat nerd, Begbie, a bland commander and the horrible camerawork. (It doesn't need to shake like its the opening of Saving Private Ryan when people are just having a discussion). With the story and characters I had the same problem with Atlantis in that it was all a bit generic and bland, but that show had two things Destiny didn't. Cinematography that didn't give me a migraine and David Hewlett. So watching that show was at least amusing due to the latter. But of course, to each their own. edit: Just to add one thing, while I didn't really care for the BSG reboot, I didn't actively hate it the way I did Destiny. Perhaps because it was a reboot and not a new part of the existing story that looked radically different. Also it didn't give me literal headaches like Destiny did (and I play flight games that can literally make people puke from motion sickness, so this is really saying something) and from what I have seen in clips, looks to be made with 100x more ability in the technical aspects of making a show.

@@krane15 I wanted to like the BSG reboot. The gender swap of one out of an ensemble crew didn't matter to me anymore than the exact same thing did with Space Battleship Yamato 2199. Times when I abhor this stuff is like what the Jurassic Park movie did with switching the kids around. A lot of it has to do with the percentage of stuff changed.... the same is true in so many other instances of _anything_ being switched around in reboots and the like. I do admit that these days, random genderswaps are a giant red caution flag. That said I will give things a chance. Some of it when done well like with Space Battleship Yamato 2199 & 2202, work well (and tbh for that show it did help mix up the crew a bit more compared to the old stuff, which was a product of its time) I had really heard from people who knew what I liked in sci-fi that BSG would be right up my alley. And even today when I will see some clips from its action scenes and whatnot, then go "you know it does look nice..." I have to remind myself that (so far) I have tried 3 times to watch the show and given up on it within 5 hours of viewing. I really don't know what it is about the show, but I just can't be bothered to care about any of it within a decent timeframe. (My general philosophy here is similar to books, where after the first 3 or so chapters, if I am not invested in the story, I stop reading. Since I know everytime I haven't, by the end it feels more like work than a relaxing activity.) I actually regret watching all 7 seasons of Voyager. I should have stopped halfway through the first season at most. Only reason I persevered was because it remained the only ST stuff I had not seen. That show was a giant waste of my time, though by the 4th or 5th season it was more like background noise I was kinda paying attention to. That was how little the show, from a franchise I adore, managed to get me invested. Maybe one of these days I will end up find a reason to like BSG enough to keep me interested.... maybe not..... its weird like that. It wouldn't be the first time it took several attempts before I watched a full show. addendum: as for things I find as flawed from a technical standpoint, like the camera in Destiny.... if the story or characters or actors can hook me, the technical parts matter far far far less. Its like when you have a game with a good story and bad gameplay, if the story is good enough the gameplay matters little, vice-versa as well. Though it takes something special with the technical side of things to make me ignore other issues with shows and movies. For instance I will watch anything that approaches the animation quality of Fantasia or The Wings of Honneamise, I don't care what it is, since I love animation as a whole. A ton of remarkable CGI or awesome practical effects would fit that bill for live action. Take the original Gone in 60 Seconds. Nothing about that movie matters, except that the entire 2nd half of the movie is one extremely awesome car chase.

Another thing you could say is a feature of the Destiny is the vertically-moving bridge, allowing those at the helm to raise or lower the bridge if needed for extra safety or extra visibility. Also the cryo pods too. Repair robots, if you count the comic. And a sidenote, the control chair doesn't require the ATA gene because it's the older model, and it's left vague as to how one uses the chair to control anything. Rush uses it to find the bridge code, Chloe uses it because of her condition at some point, and the other guy gets his mind messed up the first time and then vanishes the next time. It can connect with people inside the ship's AI system, though, which is interesting and pretty dangerous. I just don't remember anyone using it to directly control anything outside the dream world it puts people in.

I never liked the theory that the Ancients "forgot" or "abandoned" the Destiny. With 60 million years and their brainpower, I believe we are ignoring an equally possible option, they "succeeded" the Destiny. I like to think the secret message was the instructions to ascension. They cracked the signal and that's how they knew what it is and how to do it. Maybe it was left by a higher power, or earlier more advanced race, who knows...but possible.
@anulire2 жыл бұрын
They didn't. They probably discover hyperdrive in meantime and learn to ascend so Destiny wasn't important anymore
@unarealtaragionevole2 жыл бұрын
@@anulire i'm not so certain we can say they didn't. it's never actually said one way or another in the shows, books, or comics. so while all is possible, i think we have enough from the shows themselves to actually suggest the opposite. why? 1) the lanteans still have the 9th chevron in their database for usage. this wasn't an alteran database but a lantean database that was separated from the destiny and it's mission by 60 million years. what's interesting is that not only do they still have it, but it was in the system almost as if were a secret in plain sight. with no references, explanations, or instructions....but there for all to see and use at some point for those who knew what it is, and what it's for. 2) the icarus planets were using tech that came long after the building of the destiny and it's launch. why were they still building these new massive planet level techs to reach the destiny or at least have access to the destiny if they abandoned or forgot it. 3) this is not canon (or at least i don't think it is) but in the comics, eli discovers ancients in stasis. now we don't find out exactly who they are. but, we know that the most advanced stasis tech on atlantis can only sustain a person for a few thousand years with optimum power. so either, the destiny stasis tech is superior to atlantis' tech (which i doubt)...or...those ancients on the destiny are a newer crew and only a few thousands of years old. which would suggest the ancients were still sending crews to the destiny and recently. or at least within a time frame that works with the lanteans. 4) why do i think they cracked the code, and it was instructions for ascension, or this is at least a possibility? we learn from rush that the reason the destiny was sent into the darkness, was because the ancients knew that whatever was in the message was going to transform them like nothing before. that's why they invested so much effort in the project. now from the launch of the destiny to the collapse of the lanteans (60 million years of tech, exploration, inter-galactic dominance) the most transformational thing to happen was ascension. how exactly did a people who abandoned this type of thinking for science and reason, drastically and suddenly, learn how to ascend? You can't science your way into ascension. even oma says this. ascension is as much a spiritual thing as it is a physical thing. i don't think the ancients "discovered" ascension. i think they were told how when they cracked the code in their darkest and/or final hours. so what does the circumstantial evidence tell us? we know that 60 million years after the destiny launched, not only do the lanteans know about the destiny, but my have been actively been visiting her recently and staffing her with a current crew so to speak....and regardless their reasons for ascension...we know that in a rather quick time frame the lanteans "magically" discover something so powerful it allowed them to transcend and tranform in a way they would not naturally have sought out themselves under different circumstances culturally speaking. i personally think that there is enough to suggest a connection between all these things.
@anulire2 жыл бұрын
@@unarealtaragionevole Wall of text but I will say only this. Think about it. It is 60 million years since Destiny launch. As far as I know there was no ancient body on Destiniy anywhere to found, not ead nor in stasis. In 60 million years many things can happen. I mentioned hyperdrive. Destiny cannot travel that fast. It is amazing they actually menaged to negate time movement factor for traveling at speed of light or FTL. The moment hyperdrive was discovred Destiny bcame absolute. Now compare ancients with us humans. See how far we got in just last 100 years. Then imagine where we would be already if there wasn't for dark ages. We doubled our life span, We fly in airplanes. We sent people to the moon (if you believe that, I dont :p ) We have mobile phones. Use all this technology to a person just 100 years ago he would think it is magic. How ancients discovered ascention, we don't know but we also know that their kin, the Ori also learned ascention without having anything to do with ancients and Destiny. So as I said. In my mind, Destiny became apsolute since Atlantis ins around 10 000 or 20 000 years old which compared to 60 million years is blink of an eye. We also know ancients was very smart race lol. They didn't throw away anything and that is why Destiny's adress was still available Destiny's mission was to get to the source of pattern in background noise of the universe which, by that time without Hyperdrive left only possible solution. Destiny's FTL and for that it would took at least 100 000 million years more. That is why I think, they just scrub the mission.

@@anulire i will agree what you are saying is possible...but...what i am saying is equally possible. that's the fun in the debate. sadly, the way the show ended left way too many unanswered questions. so all is possible until proven otherwise. as for eli finding the ancients, that happens in SGU Back to Destiny. i will admit i don't know if it's official canon, but SGU Back to Destiny was an officially licensed story and most of the internet has embraced it as official canon. so until we are told it is not, we will have to assume it is since it's licensed material. while the ori did eventually discover ascension, we don't when or how. they may have discovered it on their own as the signal was discovered when the ori/ancients were one people so they had access to the signal...or...they may have learned about it the same time which caused the split between the ori and the lanteans in the first place. remember, that ascension requires both a spiritual as was physical component. what was the split about? they couldn't agree on whether humanity should concentrate a more spiritual path or a more science based path. the question becomes a path to what? again this is speculation, but it's also common sense speculation. since we don't know the actual dates for when or how the split happened we can't say this is what happened, but we can't say it isn't a possibility also. however, what we do know is that around 10,00 years ago the ancients were active in the milky way and they were building icarus planets at some point for the purpose of reaching the destiny still. and we know from atlantis that a stasis pods can preserve a person for about 10,000 years give or take. which again means it's possible to put a new crew of ancient's within the time window a plausibility to be the crew that eli finds on the destiny. so while this is only a theory....it's both possible and plausible.

Hyperdrive was known to Ancients when they launched Destiney, they used it during exodus from Ori galaxy. Destiny doesn’t use it because it can’t collect the relevant information while in space. The Destiny Stargate is the oldest and most primitive model in existence, predating the Antarctic Gate whose DHD was over fifty million years old. Logically the Destiny was launched before the creation of the Milky Way Stargate Network, right at the start of Alteran exploration of our own galaxy.

I feel sorry for the person who had to test out the ship recharge feature doing the development phase of the ship, imagine it "Wait; you said I have do what with the ship" yeah, just take it and fly it right into that star their, there's a 17% chance the ship may explore and you could die, but hey that's a small chance. "Why can't we use the automated feature for that" well if anything goes wrong the ships system will be under such tremendous stress from the string put on them because of the shields taking up so much power, that any diagnostics sent back by the ship computer would come back as corrupted data; so good luck and if you should die send back as much data as you can beforehand.

BTW, I just rewatched Universe, and I noticed it had 4 shuttle slots, 2 pointing forward, 2 pointing backwards, the thing is, we never see it have more than 2, but if you pay attention to Destiny flybys, you clearly see the shuttle in a pod, a corridor, and another empty pod facing backwards, so I'm guessing the other side is the same, it clearly have 4 slots.

No my friend. The Ancients did not get "sidetracked" by Ascension. They got sidetracked by The Wraith and the Replicators. Ascension was ALWAYS a collective social destination for ALL Alterrans/Ancients. Ever since their split form the Ori. the Ancients have been pursuing Ascension; and possibly even before since we KNOW that there are TWO separate opposing factions of Ascended beings.

the ancients didnt forget about the ship as there was a crew on it before the events of SGU, why the door was stuck in the first and second episode; dont need the gene for this chair as it predated the ones we see in atlantis ect; the destiny did dial earth in the star...which lead to the ep twin destinies and desendents and got col telford back to earth; looked like destiny could hold 3 shuttles one may have been destroyed; and i wouldnt say the gate on destiny was a prototype but more one of the first of gen1 of the stargates; lastly...destiny left some time after the beginning of Stargate the ark of truth, which happened 10-30 million yrs ago, so the 60 million figure is wrong

60 Million years WOULD be more accurate with existing show canon; as Atlantis itself left Earth 65 Million years ago (as seen in the pilot episode Atlantis Rising) and leaving behind the ancien woman who would later be discovered By SG-1 in season 6 when Jonas was part of the team. Of course that would make Destiny STILL newer that the Ancient City ships such as Atlantis. If destiny is 60 Million years old remember that Atlantis is still older by 5 Million Years as of the pilot. Who's to say that it wasn't already still tens or even hundreds of thousands of years old at that point. Remember the Ancients had to come TO Earth first before Leaving it 65 Million Years ago. Which begs the question...who does Destiny's newer technology look OLDER and more rudimentary than Atlantis, when Atlantis is actually older??

I don't care if he IS one of the show producers... 60 Million years is absurd. Even a million is stupid. I get it... When your fictional TV universe lasts for more than a decade, and keeps growing in scope, you'll end up with a lot of contradictory loose ends that you have to retcon. But THAT was terrible. Worse than the Star Wars Parsec retcon.

@@yazanmowed My point is, that's far too long. That would make too many mismatches with past development and present time lines. Besides, Atlantis is nowhere near that old. Remember, 5 million years is the difference between modern humans and monkeys (OK, maybe [planet of the] apes), but all the humans in the Milky way and Pegasus all look the same. Sorry, but Destiny was a bad idea (and I am not talking about the show, just the ship). I get its a long range experiment, but what was the end goal? Its been 60 million years. Even if the Ancients weren't wiped out by the Ori and then the Wraith, they wouldn't have profited from anything the ship beamed back. I am not sure if it is ever stated on the show, but we don't even know how close it is to its destination. Then, while we know the ship has definitely been under attack over the years, the ship is basically falling apart, which means its ether just was built no where near well enough to complete its mission, or its just limping along. That being said, it is one of the oldest ship's in scifi as a whole. Interesting concept, never liked the show, but the ship was definitely interesting.

If you only think about what will directly benefit you you will never be one of the great men/women.
@jhmcd22 жыл бұрын
@@DrewLSsix The point is that the ship didn't seem well prepared. Granted, it's holding up well for 60 million, but even by this time, it was clear the ancients had been in their share of interstellar wars. The ship doesn't seem to be well equiped even with the dammage and age. The ship also seems slow compared to hyperspace capable ships (although I wonder if that was by design). The ship seems less about designed for some grand generation spanning knowledge mission, and more act of desperation. I know it's from a level of tech from a period we don't see on screen outside of this show, but the entire mission just seems poorly conceived. I almost wonder if this structure at the core of the universe wasn't spotted on their trip from the Ori galaxy, and seaking it out was more an attempt to unify a demorralized, but rebuilding society than actually trying to reach its goal.
@adarian2 жыл бұрын
@@jhmcd2 In order to understand the structure hidden in the CBR it needed to take readings from as many varied places as possible so just hyperspacing around would be skipping a lot of readings. The ship seems incredibly prepared to me especially if you go with the longer numbers for how long it has been going. The ship was supposed to end up manned but was not but it still is around and functioning after all those eons and who knows how many combat situations and spacial anomalies it came across. The same can be said about the seed ships sent ahead that are still pumping out star gates ahead of the destiny. I think the reason the Destiny program fell by the wayside and never ended up manned was all the knowledge and answers they could seek with it was something they would know once they figured how to ascend so they decided to focus on that instead.

That's the issue with Star Trek Picard. They change it to fit the current generation, but don't gain new fans and alienate the old ones that expected a continuation of something similar to the old. I still recall that same apprehension when they announced TNG. Thing is, Roddenberry was still around and involved, and why that show was a huge success and resulted in several spin-off and ultimately and entire franchise. They still had the same Federation and the same values, and even brought in many of the old characters. Sadly, Nichols and Takei never crossed TNG threshold.
