Daughters jaw drops...Mom just looks over and starts nodding. Yeah, that's how I feel when I introduce someone to this masterpiece. I'll agree to disagree but still, can appreciate your opinion. I don't think he (or they) holds a candle to the beauty of Simon and Garfunkel's version, and I guess that means a LOT of people will be coming after me pretty soon. Kind of feels though, like I just stuck my hand in a hornets' nest. However, what I see in the comments (here) is a WAVE of people who must have heard this version first, which I think explains why they like this one so much over the original.

Greetings Mom and Daughter, You hit the nail on the head, with your synopsis. The original version for me, is a gentle warning of Not hearing and not speaking anything of context or related to anyone except yourself, and to open your eyes and really pay attention to the world around you. Then, Disturbed’s version, is in reaction to the Original not being heeded after 50 plus years. This version starts out, for me internally screaming into the Void, in response to the lack of anything changing after mankind is still in the same rut and wearing blinders. David’s Awesome song-craft, gradually intensifies with each chorus, really trying to wake the listener up, shake them up and feel what he is feeling with him! The steps up in volume and intensity continue to try to break down your own brick walls by getting in your face. To describe his voice’s tonal impact, it starts as Velvet, then becomes like Sandpaper, then migrates to full “Sponge Ruiner’ [e.g. think, washing a Cheese grater with a sponge] mode! Then finally he softens seeing the light turn on in your eyes, hoping almost knowing you’ll continue to enlighten others.

I wish I could have shared this with my dad. The night before the Vietnam War draft, he told me about going to a midnight meeting at the church at the center of his college campus. All the lights were turned off except the candles, they played this song on the pipe organ, and everyone sang since it was new enough to still be on pop charts. So many more than "10,000 people" went down into silence in the next few years, after that night, and this is the best musical approximation I've heard of the rage we should still feel about that. I'm glad you get to share this across generations. You're very lucky.

For an extremely emotional experience, you should react to Eva Cassidy’s live acoustic versions of Over The Rainbow, the Judy Garland classic from The Wizard of Oz and her cover from the same evening of Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time. It’s just her playing her acoustic guitar (which she does exquisitely) and singing in one of the most angelic voices ever. Over The Rainbow left this old biker/truck driver with tears streaming down his face. So beautiful!
