This man is so misunderstood and underappreciated !! A real legend in my book!!! He's up there with Arnold, Sergio and all the greats!! He helped paved the way for black Bodybuildersm and that's fact!! Robbie is a great equal rights activist in his own rights!!
@workingoutguy7 ай бұрын
I do not buy that Robby helped "paved the way for black bodybuilders". Robby helped paved the way for ALL bodybuilders. I knew him casually ( I ran a gym he trained at). He was nice man but very introverted. He also had two wives ( illegal). That may have been another reason why he wasn't on the covers as much? Bottom line: The Weiders were all about making $$ and promoting bodybuilding. If Robby helped make them more $$ by being on the cover, he would have been on many more covers.

I was weight lifting as a teenager in the early 70s and had never seen a bodybuilder or any muscle magazine, I was 5'10" and 130 lbs. born with genetics with long muscle bellies and was gifted with amazing strength. Then one day my dad handed me a copy of Muscle/Builder & Power, I open it randomly and the first real bodybuilder my eyes ever saw in my life was Mr. Robby Robinson in 1975, I couldn't believe what I was seeing and didn't think Robby was real I was dumb founded. Well Robby inspired and sent me off on the right track and four years latter when I graduated high school I was still 5'10' but now 225lbs. and held all the powerlifting state records with a 450lbs. bench press in 1979, still following Robby's bodybuilding training methods till this day and at 60-years old with a 30-inch. waist and 20-inch arms I have only one great bodybuilder that's my hero the great Mr. Robby Robinson. Thank you Robby for being who you are, love you my brother!

I trained at World Gym. I was a gym manager in Marina Del Rey too, and Robbie and Tony Pearson trained together there. Robby was a different cat. He was very introverted. Rarely spoke, He was married and had another wife at the same time. He lived in Europe for a time. I was told Robby wasn't on too many covers of the Muscles Mags, because at that time, sales went down when a black man was on the cover. Robby had a great body. But, he did not have a charismatic personality ( to be fair, most bodybuilders didn't). I was told in Vietnam, he got stabbed by the enemy ( he pretended to be dead). He did not make a sound ( otherwise, they would have killed him). That takes tremendous mental strength. The Weiders were the only game in town. Cross them, and you got banned. Robby wasn't the only one. Kal Szkalak ( white) was banned too. Kal sued the Weiders and won a big payday. The Weiders made millions. They loved bodybuilding and did help bodybuilders. However, you had to be a business man, and athlete AND street smart to deal with them. That's why Arnold was so successful. Today, Robby is loved, respected, and adored. He is one of the few remaining bodybuilder from the Golden Era who still trains. And it is his time to get the recognition he deserves.

I have a vintage bomber style jacket with that famous statue bust of Joe Weider embroidered on the back of it and I get alot of compliments on when wearing it places. When people ask me "who is Joe Weider?", I briefly explain to them that he's pretty much the Godfather of modern fitness and bodybuilding, however I'm always sure to tell everyone that the body is not his and explain to them that it's a bust mold of Robby Robinson. I typically always show them old pictures of Robby and their usually amazed! Then, I show them current pics of Robby and their even more amazed! I said all that to say, if no-one else will give Robby his credit, I will. He deserves it after the many upon many years he's put into his craft of bodybuilding! He's also a very genuine human being.

Having read Robby's book and also having followed bodybuilding closely during Robby's competitive era, I am heartened to read these wonderful comments about a man who, in my opinion, is a true gift to humanity. Joe Weider was one of the World's most ardent self-promoters. When Joe deceitfully and manipulatively used Robby's bust as his own, was he not essentially admitting that Robby had the best physique? Yes, I realize there were many great physiques of the golden era, but in my humble opinion, Robby's physique was as good as any contemporary physique, if not better. Plus, the way he has maintained his conditioning into his 70's is truly amazing!

Racism has been a polarizing issue in almost every facet of life and the realm of sports is not excluded. That is the next step for blacks, as that is going to much more natural, like walking up a flight of stairs....haha...

@Anton Hallergren yeah Blacks dominated every sport but they don't run the sport, they're not C.E .Os or GM's of these companies, so that's racist right there, you got plenty of blacks on the plantation but how many is the master, I'll wait.☀Florida

Great interview Vlad. This guy was a trail blazer... like Vincent De Beaufort (in the comments below) said - " he ... was so ahead ... of his time". His physique was and still is a 'classic' and I love that he spoke out (like Shawn Ray) of the injustice in the sport and in life. Any injustice is a threat to Justice everywhere. You are a true and Genuine Leader Robbie. You're not the "Black" Prince ...in my books you're the "Prince of Truth" Thank you for standing up to injustice and standing your ground. You the man ... a living Legend ... a living Hero. Keep up interviews of great GENUINE bodybuilders like Robbie Robinson. Cheers & AHoy Popeye Pirate Paul ... from Downunder

Robby Robinson you look great i have always been a fan of bodybuilding since i was a kid. You are a legend and it is sad to hear your mistreatment. It is great how you handled yourself and prevailed. Im gonna buy both of your books !!!!!

I never really thought about racism in BB but this has to be one of the best interviews that I have listened too by one of the greats !
@bbarnett34694 жыл бұрын
Wow, one of the best interviews of this Channel...but it was hard to watch & listen, too easy to believe as those were the realities of the times. Just imagine hearing that from a (famous-public idol) guy like Joe Weider...simply soul-crushing brother. Gotta appreciate the strong mindset of Mr. Robinson, to get that kind of news, then still go out and look & act like a champion/success at that very endeavor/profession. We would have never known.... Bravo Mr. Robinson, Bravo! Living well is (still) the best revenge...and "looking-good" doing it is just a bonus!! That's what makes Legends out of mere (humble) mortals.

What a great personality, Mr. Robinson possesses. God bless you. Is. Keep spreading these stories and expose Arnold, the Weaders, and all the others. You will be documented in the history of bodybuilding and USA

Man, that was a good interview!! A true southerner that gives two f..ks about what people think and tells it as it is. Weider was talking salty about the Rock as well. Totally believe him!!! I'm glad he came out about Weider being a bigot!!

I do recall ordering bodybuilding magazines back in the early 80’s. Every issue was categorized by the bodybuilder’s name. And the black bodybuilders were classified “black bodybuilders” and not by name. I’m truly glad to see Robbie over come and showed the the world one of the greatest physiques on the planet. And absolute best double bicep shot ever. Much respect to you.

I saved a copy of a Seventies bodybuilding magazine with a story about this icon. From 1979 to 2020 and Robby has barely changed...grey hair...a bit smaller...and still great!

Wow, this interview is a real eye opener. I appreciate Robby's honesty.

Robby Robinson went thru alot in that time and it was difficult even telling his wife why are you with that black man just to break him up. Robby stood up and that is motivating me in my life.

One of your best if not the best interviews I feel his pain you would have to be black to understand and feel what he’s gone through.
@nickcollins9170 Жыл бұрын
Highly doubt simply being black would do it you would have to have been black at least 40 years ago to talk from experience.

Robby, you're a true champion of a human being because I know damn well a lot of black bodybuilding legends dont have the guts to tell the fucking truth and come out about racism in this sport.

Sad. I know this is true, because there was Lee Haney had to get his first cover on another magazine. That didn't happen until he was on his last Mr. Olympia. 😔😔😔

I am just blown away im am glade that robby speaks his mind and he right bodybuilding has to change if everyone is to be successful in the sport of bodybuilding no one weather in public or in the sport of bodybuilding should be worried about the skin on their muscles inorder to win a show but I'm sure its been happening and its sad very sad I'm happy the great "prince" himself spoke out about this topic.💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿

Robbie was (is) the GD man! When I first started lifting as a teen his was the physique I admired and wanted to emulate. Before I got on the Mike Mentzer kick I followed everything RR put out. This was before we realized that it was, to a large extent, about genetics. Lol. If anyone has ever been screwed over by the IFBB it is Robbie. He deserved so much more.

@iktomi54 жыл бұрын
That was entertaining! The Black Prince, never heard him speak proper. Fantasy could be the only mind set to think a black pro of yesteryear wouldn't be assaulted by racism. 50-70's second class citizens, world wide. The Weider brothers top heads of an industry in a period international institutional racism, how could they act without influence of the times. Cold cash money talks. Ace interview 💯💪🏽💥 Robbie's a star fa real

It's a shame you had to go through that. I'm an old school bodybuilding fan and it is terrible that you were treated like that when you went out to California. I had no idea that it was like that. I knew there was politics in the sport but never imagined racism.

Robbie Robinson is the man, and yes I believe every single word he has spoken in this interview. Ummm shame on Joe Weider, because I still have many of his old magazines and still use a flat bench with his name on it. One of the best interviews I’ve seen by a true American hero
