Genesis - best band in the world. Tony Banks, the keyboardist, is referred to as “the soul of Genesis”. But they’re all important, whether it’s Phil, Mike or Tony. All three are fabulous musicians who recorded wonderful solo albums. But when they came together in the studio they created pure magic. On stage they were supported by Chester Thompson on drums and Daryl Stuermer on guitar and bass.

I have a feeling Phil is playing the maracas during that part because, as a drummer, he just needs something to do with his hands while singing. He probably thinks the boring part of his job is the singing so he just can’t wait to get behind that drum. 😆

What you said about the drums being in the back and the player being hidden is why Phil rarely sang from the drum kit. The audience wanted a front man and Phil was a showman. He did sing and drum at the same time, occasionally-most notably in In The Air Tonight live from Paris. That's solo Phil. But most of the time he' either singing or drumming, or you'll see it at the end of a song when there are just a few lyrics left after the instrumental. You need to watch In the Air Tonight from Paris. He goes bonkers on the drums and his voice never wavers.

Back in the late 60's and early 70's Genesis, Phil was just the drummer and backup singer, Peter Gabriel was the lead singer, Mike Rutherford played bass and rhythm guitar, Steve Hackett was lead guitar and of course Tony Banks was always on keyboards and wrote the songs. back then their songs were more complex...take a listen to one of their old songs it will blow your mind! I'd advise you to watch this whole gig in order and imagine the jn the cage medley you just watched as well was played just before it suddenly gets dark... They had to leave it out of the recording due to changing the tapes over

Not really in the end of his solo, made some bumps. Even worse on That's all on this particular tour. Mike is more a bass player, rythm guitar player but definitevely not a lead guitar player.

It was around this time I started looking into Genesis' back catalogue, having been so impressed with this album and Collins' first solo album, not long after I saw Peter Gabriel live (for the first of two times) in Toronto. I was actually working in a record store at the time (I had all sorts of job in my teens!). Sadly, I never did get to see Genesis or Collins live.

Great song! Gotta have a music nerd moment, tho: "Abacab" isn't the chord progression, strictly speaking. It's the musical pattern used here, one example of what's called a rondo, which alternates musical themes (in this case, ABACAB - with a main theme, A, and two other alternating themes, B & C). You can have ABACA, ABACAB, ABACBA, ABCABC...
