This vid gives me a deeper appreciation for Banks’ ability to not only play this but to CREATE this piece of music. So many working parts.

A story: I was in college in 1981. I had (like everybody else) to take English Composition 101. I had a good teacher, who did assume she (or anyone else) had the "right" interpretation for anything we were analyzing. So, time came do do our big year-end composition. We had a poetry anthology which we'd been using the entire year. Our assignment was to find any poem in that book, and write a paper on it. Well, I looked and looked and looked and looked, but I just couldn't find anything in that book that resonated with me. So, the next day in class, I took a chance. I had been listening to Cinema Show for years by then, and had always loved it. But I didn't really understand the lyrics. So I asked Ms. Burcham if I could use that song instead of a poem from the book, for my paper. She asked me if I had really looked hard int the book. Then she said she'd think about it. Well, I guess since I had an "A" up until then in her class, she relented. "But," she said, "since I'm allowing you to do this, I will be grading your paper a bit harder than everyone else's. I agreed, and got to work. I tell you, I never did so much research, or worked so damn hard an any school project, since I'd done a presentation on Leonard Bernstein, in high school. I listened to the song on my Sony Walkman, while I perused the books in the college library. I probably spent 20 hours on that paper. And...............I got an "A."

I have seen many movies with worse and more boring scripts. But I can also imagine the smile on the teacher's face when she told you that you could do it while she was thinking: "he doesn't know what he's getting into...". Anyway, lucky you were able to do it!

This gives you some appreciation for the musical genius talent of Tony Banks to not only to produce these sounds from the various keyboards, but to do it consistently night after night without flaw.

Hi Nick, glad you liked it! As briefly mentioned in the vid - I'm using a couple of layered mellotron choir sounds, I layer them due to shortcomings in the samples provided on the Roland expansion boards which means that up high, they sound very sampled. In addition there's the slow string mellotron sound and a basic organ patch which as far as I can tell mimics the overdubs Tony Banks used on the album. Other than that it's various experiments with reverb, eq and panning to make it sound BIG!

Hi, A brief recap... Lead Sounds - Korg MS2000 programmed by me, mostly by lining it up with my ARP ProSoloist to get a reasonable match. Mellotron sounds - all from Roland Expansion boards, some layering of choir/string samples from "Vintage Synths" and "Keyboards of the 60s and 70s". Organ - Nord Electro. Hope this helps! Cheers, Doug

That was beautifully played, Doug. How wonderful to see and hear Tony's compositions played with such fine attention to detail. Thank you. I saw you play with ReGenesis in Newcastle many years ago. I would guess at 2006/7. I remember it was absolutely first rate.

I can only echo previous comment. Sadly, amateur keyboard players are destined to remain amateurs because we started late in life. Most great keyboard players started at the age of 4 or 5. This a great video and I especially admire the programming required to replicate the synth sounds.

Very interesting Doug. and nice playing on one of my favourite instrumental pieces of music. That gives a more precise idea about how it's crafted. A lot of work was put into it, I guess. And you managed to emulate Banks' sounds on the 70's recording(s) very well :o)

The Nord can do the Mellotron sounds too, but it may simply be more convenient to have a 3rd keyboard than to toggle sounds on two keyboards at once. Unless you're Jordan Rudess, of course, and preprogram all your sound changes and step through them with a foot pedal... If I were to play live again, I'd prefer two 'boards: a lower with a weighted piano action and 88 (or at least 73) keys, and an upper with a waterfall/synth action for organ and synth leads.

What I like about the very end of that long, epic synth solo is the simple melody (just E and B triads arpeggiated) which gains its beauty by the underlying chords - and then, in the original, the seamless crossfade to Aisle of Plenty. :)

hi mate you have your top keyboard at way too steep an angle to play it properly, just like a great deal of players.. a keyboard should be set parralel/ same angle as your arm so that your arm angles the same as your keyboard, other wise there is no way you can effectable play your keyboard at its best. many players on youtube as well as "big name" players wrongly play there keyboards the same way. cheers.

@@dougmelbourne8343 yes, also many keyboardist have there lower keyboards also angled downwards from back to front, this i find very silly i do a make shift get arround using shelf brakets at front of stand raising the front of the keyboard with another shelf bracket as back stop at the end with shelf brackets held in place with car accsesery juberlee clips. cant understand why so many keyboardists that is what you have to do to have the lower keyboards parralel with youe arms. think about it. i seem to be uniquie in understanding this simple fact of how/what makes keyboards easyer to play. try it. you'll be amazed and would proberly then aggee with me. but as you said its personal preferance but my arrangement definately for me, and wouls guess others if they thought about it and did such would aggree with me. cheers. and thanx for your comment.
