I bought my first property in 1978 and rescued my Hi Fi from my parents loft. Duke was probably the most played album that I had. Still brilliant !

Duke is a masterpiece. Returning to this music in 2019, and it holds up very well. This is one of the best songs of the era. Interesting hybrid of rock, jazz fusion, pop. Very powerful feelings expressed in this composition.

Daniel Mckerrigan It always sounded to me as if the Dutchess were a pop sensation whose star faded. Never got the sense that it was about progressive bands.

@@peacefuljeffrey I agree. Seems to paint a good picture of the "flash-bang" of the ever emerging pop music from that era, and it holds true through the 80's, 90's and certainly today. The music industry produces a pretty face, with average vocals with some high note fanfare, maybe a catchy recycled beat, and then after a few years enter someone new. We call can list 10-20 of those artists within minutes.

3 Sides Live has the most amazing vocals, and of course the band is dead-on...it's one of the best live albums from an engineering standpoint...it's just so dynamic...

Earl as good as 3 Sides is from an engineering stand point as digital recording, Seconds is really a crowning achievement with a dynamic range and clarity usually reserved for studio albums.

This band is one of the most legendary and classic that have passed through USA/UK.And I mean it. Their sound is something no band can reach,it's unique,A mixture of elaborate instruments,rhythmic notes from guitar and stuff...just take a "hearing"at duchess.There is on way any band could do that rofl. Yep, 1980. Got detention twice, once for missing school in the morning, to go get the tickets.. and again for skipping out early to go see the show. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Duke was a tuff sell even to a youngster, just wanted to hear “Seconds Out” but sounds good now happy memories.

Probably their most accomplished album. Just before Phil Collins hit worldwide mega stardom. His voice was at its most powerful and his range was right at the top of his game. Way before autotune and on stage ear pieces, he blasted out tracks listening to himself through stage monitors, yet he was always in tune and in time. Genesis were one of the very best live bands ever. Super tight playing by very talented musicians.

to me it seems like they were about to learn how to perform this piece. a little lag in tempo, a little too much self-indulgence, or simply the first steps out of "anti-star-behavior"? Duchess is really hard to play!! To me, Phil is the only one ever to play drums on Duchess as it was mentioned. But good to see this footage, as a reminder how everyone can grow, learn, and be.

Chester is great, but he asked the band to drop Down and Out from the live set list because it was too hard to play it as Phil wrote it. Says a lot about how under appreciated Phil’s drumming is.

1janeybug I dunno, but I read that in an old Genesis bio book I had long ago. I’m sure Chester *could* play it of course, but probably just preferred not to. That reverse beat stutter on the last two beats of the 5/4 is intense.

The desperation to Phil Collins’ performance here matches the theme of the song. To me it also seems to reflect his own efforts to be the frontman after Peter Gabriel left Genesis. I like this raw, hungry version of Collins.

Back in '80, I saw them on this tour on May 17, 1980. Not knowing them well at the time, I was so blown away, I became an immediate fan. It's too bad I missed the earlier incarnations, but nonetheless, that particular tour was a real turning point for the band, good and bad. They still played enough of their prog roots, live, to keep me interested.
