So many memories. Duke was released my first year away at college. Very powerful emotionally. Many layers to this era of music. At first blush, Duchess is about a fading Diva. Then you think, maybe how Genesis had to morph to survive the future. Growing older, one sees Life's cycle of growth, maturity, then gradual fading during the sunset of our lives. All in one simple tune...

@@peacefuljeffrey I agree. Seems to paint a good picture of the "flash-bang" of the ever emerging pop music from that era, and it holds true through the 80's, 90's and certainly today. The music industry produces a pretty face, with average vocals with some high note fanfare, maybe a catchy recycled beat, and then after a few years enter someone new. We call can list 10-20 of those artists within minutes.

Probably their most accomplished album. Just before Phil Collins hit worldwide mega stardom. His voice was at its most powerful and his range was right at the top of his game. Way before autotune and on stage ear pieces, he blasted out tracks listening to himself through stage monitors, yet he was always in tune and in time. Genesis were one of the very best live bands ever. Super tight playing by very talented musicians.

to me it seems like they were about to learn how to perform this piece. a little lag in tempo, a little too much self-indulgence, or simply the first steps out of "anti-star-behavior"? Duchess is really hard to play!! To me, Phil is the only one ever to play drums on Duchess as it was mentioned. But good to see this footage, as a reminder how everyone can grow, learn, and be.
