Don't get me wrong. I love Phil. But one forgets how much of a beast on the Keys that is Tony Banks under Phil's enormous shadow. Tony was the sound of Genesis right from the beginning. His work on Duke was exquisite.

Like someone once said in a magazine piece somewhere about this band, “It was Tony’s train set from the beginning.” I’m curious to see what Banks does musically in the future. Because I think he still has more in there to get out. If you take my meaning…

That's exactly what I thought, of course the talent of all the members is undeniable, but i think Tony Banks is the key of why this band sounds so good. The synth on Duke Travel is absolutely perfect and sounds so right in the sounds, nuances, melodies..

Personally Phil or Uncle Phil as my kids grew up calling him was always the draw for me in the past. It wasn't until I started listening to them after a long time I started to appreciate Tony and Mike and not forgetting the touring players Daryl Steumer and Chester Thompson. Its pure genius and I think that many bands not actually admitting it as they weren't considered cool, were influenced by Genesis. Who cares about cool when you have musical geniuses such as them, charming your ear holes. Will always love them, part of my youth and beyond!!🖤💜🖤

Phil is laughing with Mike because they had just totally screwed up. You don’t see or hear this on this ‘official’ version where the audio has been cleaned up and edited but if you watch - and listen - to a crowd video of this gig you will hear the mess they made of the passage in Firth of Fifth just before the end of the keyboard solo. You can also see Mike and Phils’ interaction with Mike seeming to blame Phil for what happened! Nothing to do with Daryl’s solo at all...

Time with a lot of creativity and ace musician. Electronics components and instruments have made the final difference for evolution, avant-garde and new styles of music. 1960 until the end of the '90s is unique in musical art. Phil had already lost a few steps on the drums here in 2007 due to his health issues. You can easily hear it here and you can see a little pain on his face as he plays. These days, he can't even hold the sticks. Truly a shame. I think what's going to bother me the most though is seeing him confined to a chair for most of the performance. He was always so energetic, bouncing around the stage having fun. It was a big part of the show. Now he physically can't do it. But prime Genesis or not, I have to see these guys play before I die and before they die. I'll take what I can get.

@@kingcrimson234 Oh yea, he was already suffering by this point. But at the time you couldn't quite tell unless you were really scrutinizing him. I was only 16 during this tour and had never seen them, so even if Phil was past his prime in retrospect I still feel happy to have seen him when he was still operating at maybe 75 % of his peak years' energy. The music speaks for itself - stunning and masterful. Also amazing: this concert was not only free, the audience was... 500,000. Yes, half a million (you can see this in a few large audience shots in the video). This due to that the summer Olympics in 1960 were held in Rome. I lived in Rome at the time, and later used to sneak into one of the huge stadiums/venues that had been built for some mischief as a 10 year old. One of them must have been the place where this concert was held.

That has to be one of the most beautiful rock stage/lighting designs ever. Genesis was always at the forefront in production (they helped fund the development of the first moving head lighting fixture). I love the asymmetric shape, the multiple layers of lights and the cantilevered truss, the video wall.. Oh yeah, the music is pretty cool too. :-) But I want to give a shout out to the guys behind the scenes that make the concert a show. It must have really been something to see live.

I think it very good that Hackett plays to sellout crowds today with his old Genesis tunes and Genesis continued his great music legend as well. They certainly got on better than the Beatles or many other bands did. This band, Genesis, were adults who, in large measure, got along very well. Most rock bands did not.
