This song was added into a movie presentation for my father's funeral a couple of weeks ago. I'm 19 almost 20 and I'll always have great memories of going on trips and my dad playing three sides live for me. I've loved genesis ever since I first introduced to them over a decade ago, when I was about 7. I was grateful enough to see genesis on their last tour with my dad and Peter Gabriel with him this past fall. This song will always stick with me after his service, as I wanna keep listing to remember the good days.

I was in the first audience that ever heard the song played, Phil Collins himself told the audience 'that we were the first to hear that song.' That was the 8th of April, 1978... Dayton Hara Arena, Ohio. Phil tried to meet me backstage because he thought I was David Bowie (until I said to him): "this is the first concert I've ever been to, you guys are great; you're going to go places!" Hi, Phil

Fun fact: Mike wasn’t really a fan of this song when he wrote it and even thought about scrapping it as he felt it was too lyrically repetitive. So they intended it to be just a B-side, but it wasn’t until the record execs told the band “guys, you have a hit here.” The rest is history.
@seanfennel4845
@seanfennel4845 2 жыл бұрын
That doesn't really jibe with the story they've always told that it was a blatant attempt to get more female fans. You wouldn't intend an attempt to broaden your fan base as a B side.

Genesis never hid their desire to turn out hit singles - I know what I like in your wardrobe, Counting out the Time, Your own Special Way - and never thought there was anything wrong with that. Mike did persist in the effort to craft singles and to widen the group's appeal to woman; and the record execs did, in fact, assert that they had delivered a hit single with Follow you, Follow me

Instantly transports me back to a carefree youthful moment of summertime happiness. The sun hadn't set quite yet. Her legs were long and tan. Eyes, perfect pools of blue. Reaching out to hold a hand. Warm touch, turn of hair, smile and laughter. Hopeful. Wanting. A brief and innocent anticipation. The kind of glow that only happens when we're young and everything is new. The kind of memory that one longs to feel again, but aches to know it's long past, never to be again. It's mine though and I'm glad to remember it.

Two days ago, my aunt Lin passed away. I don’t know why this song came on when I got the news, but it did as I was listening to the radio. For some reason, this song made me think of her some of the lyrics really resonated, especially the part where Phil is singing about, someone being there in time of darkness. If anyone here happens to know, my aunt Lin, she was always a bright spot in a room full of darkness. Full of life and energy and love. I wish so badly. She was still here so I could tell her how important she was to everybody, including her family and husband, who miss her just as much, if not more than I do. I think this song for helping me deal with my grief as I move forward.

2022 Genesis and Phil still THE BEST in this world. Thanks for all you do. Soon in Paris ! Thank you very much, we love you. Take care of yourself. With all my Love and Respect. We need you... and I need you. Respect Eternel !

Now this is what turned me on to Genesis. We were down in my best friends basement doing bongs and he put this on and I was hooked. I was 18 and now 58 and still my favorite group and never missed a concert from 1976-2007. This song was so great live because Phil would put in I will follow you would you please follow me and I would stay with you would you please stay with me and the original lyrics doesn't have please in there. My favorite Genesis song. Still do bongs to Genesis..

This really is a revolutionary song. It is the first Disney-like synth-pop ballad that would dominate the 80s and 90s. The pulsating guitar, the "Africa" type programmed percussion, the synthesizer solo. The perfect example of how prog rock gave rise to synth pop.
