John Mayhew deserves some credit for his work on this album. Apparently he was too working class for the band. Enter middle class genius Phil Collins. That obviously was a good move, but let’s not underestimate Mr John Mayhew. Drummer and Joiner. Bless you.

@wills2140
@wills2140 Жыл бұрын
The term you are looking for is "working class". Mike is from a middle class background as well, you just can't tell when he is (was) playing polo, lol. John Mayhew being a carpenter was not the main issue ( where else did he play drums ? ). As Tony has said in more recent interviews the Mayhew and another family were instrumental in the Band having some support in the early days ( after years of other interviews where he does dismiss John as just a carpenter, Mike always was nicer but who can tell what he is mumbling in the half formed sentences he usually speaks ). The issue was John did not contribute to song writting, even on the drums. As crazy as it seems now that there are only 3, Tony, Mike, Peter, and Antony Phillips were all ( aspiring ) song writers - and wanted Genesis to be about song writing. Despite his veneer of humility now - Phil brought more than just higher level drumming.
@KlausSgroi
@KlausSgroi Жыл бұрын
Even though I'm glad Phil joined the band, I don't think John was a bad drummer. Ant Phillips said in a 2007 interview there was a clash of personalities: John didn't fit the band because he was uptight and had a chip on his shoulder.

I saw Genesis in 1971 in a little theater in Liège, Belgium with Steve Hackett. They played Tresspass and the beginning of Nursery Cryme. Being the Genesis fanatic that I am, I love the albums from Trespass up to Duke. My favorite is The Lamb. Still the greatest example of Progressive Rock ever recorded! But, Trespass showed me just what Genesis was all about. A true masterpiece amongst masterpieces! And this song is simply goose bump material! So much of the sound that became "Genesis" came from this album! Bravo, Lads! Bravo!

i still like the prog pop from Duke and onwards but the old Genesis magic was replaced with a way more commercial feel, this is especially apparent after Abacab. While you still have some really great prog pop inbetween the love songs and very commercial pop songs, it's nowhere near what it used to be.

"Visions Of Angels" Standing in a forest gazing at the sun looking at the trees but there's not even one See a rippling stream that smiles and then goes by run to feel its comfort but the water's dry. I see her face and run to take her hand Whey she's never there I don't understand The trumpets sound my whole world crumbles down Visions of angels all around dance in the sky Leaving me here forever goodbye. As the leaves will crumble so will fall my love for the fragile beauty of our lives must fade Though I once remember echoes of my youth now I sense no past, no love that ends in love Take this dream the stars have filled with light As the blossom glides like snowflakes from the trees In vengeance to a god no-one can reach. Visions of angels all around dance in the sky Leaving me here forever goodbye. Ice is moving and world's begun to freeze see the sunlight stopped and deadened by the breeze Minds are empty bodies move insensitive some believe that when they die they really live I believe there never is an end God gave up this world its people long ago Why she's never there I still don't understand Visions of angels all around dance in the sky Leaving me here forever goodbye. Late night on K-SHE in Crestwood, Missouri in the early 70's the DJ Dick Merkle would play whole albums. My parents bought me a radio and this album went through my earphones and into my brain. I was so lucky. Moving to other cities as an adult I found that other friends did not have such an awesome radio station and their childhood was stunted by generic top-40.

I remember listening to this song years ago as a child. Online music streaming via programs such as Pandora was barely starting to catch on. I used some random program similar to that on my Blackberry to listen to it (maybe someone remembers it?). Anyways, when I first heard this song it instantly became one of my favorites. The imagery and passion bleeds through and it always made me imagine a lonely mountaintop. Years later I was listening to Foxtrot because I came upon it randomly. I remembered the album cover and the song "time table". Eventually I checked their other album and realized I recognized this album cover as well. Listening to this song once more brought back so many memories as if I were reliving them once again as a child. Absolutely beautiful song. This band has a very wide range of music. I'm not a fan of all of it, but the earlier albums are some of my favorites. There's something really special about Foxtrot and Trespass. Both albums have this feeling that's special and never tires me of listening to them. I'm hoping to get a physical version of these albums so I can add them to my collection.

Quite possibly my favourite Genesis album. This appears to be a remix.

Kind of reminds me of some of Kansas's early work off of Song For America.

Beautiful and at times haunting. Tied with "A Trick of the Tail" as my fourth-favorite Genesis album following their three following this one ("The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" is one side too many for me). "Wind and Wuthering" has its moments but "...And the There Were Three..." strikes me as transitional toward the Phil Collins backup band Genesis became beginning with "Duke." Can't knock success and the pop version of Genesis moved a lot more units than the Gabriel Era version ever did but the pop version has little to no appeal personally. My own catalogue begins with this album and ends with "A Trick of the Tail," although I'll give "Wind & Wuthering" another listen.

Hang on! Why is the first hashtag #PhilCollins when he didn't even participate in this record? John Mayhew was the percussionist back then.

Ainda sem Phil Collins e Steve Hackett logo disseram ao que vinham. E ao adoptarem o nome do primeiro dos livros sagrados, trouxeram o divino à musica. Definitivamente, the Best Band, ever, a minha Banda.

OOPS, I recognize my error ! It was of course Anthony Phillips on the Guitar by then. It does not make this song an ounce less beautiful, doesn't it ?
