Back when I was Christian in my teenage years, it was alleged by a church elder that I was possessed. The reason for this was two fold: that I was taking the Christian social-culture cues around pursuing marriage and courtship too seriously, and concurrently that I was depressed because of it. Basically, for succumbing to their own grooming and indoctrinations about needing to get married early, because it's the will of God. Trying too hard to be devout and a good Christian, so I could be a good husband and find a good wife, and earn my place in the church and in heaven. Making the human error of believing that, and also throwing myself to the whims of flawed human perceptions to some degree broke my sanity as well as what was or what I thought was my faith. It came at a relatively high cost, but I'm glad I took what I believed to be faith so seriously, because it's what lead me beyond it, and I'm much happier and healthier for it, haven't had that ironic demon since. Off the ultra conservative and fundamentalist Jesus juice since around 2002, and never going back.

Glad to hear you're doing better. Also the sheer irony of your story put me in mind of this passage from Catch-22: “He was polite to his elders, who disliked him. Whatever his elders told him to do, he did. They told him to look before he leaped, and he always looked before he leaped. They told him to never put off until the next day what he could do the day before, and he never did. He was told to honor his father and his mother, and he honored his father and his mother. He was told that he should not kill, and he did not kill, until he got into the Army. Then he was told to kill, and he killed. He turned the other cheek on every occasion and always did unto others exactly as he would have had others do unto him. When he gave to charity, his left hand never knew what his right hand was doing. He never once took the name of the Lord his God in vain, committed adultery or coveted his neighbor's ass. In fact, he loved his neighbor and never even bore false witness against him. Major Major's elders disliked him because he was such a flagrant nonconformist.”

Kids will take the weird spiritual-type stories that float around and pull them in all soprts of strange directions. Me and my friends in elementary school had a whole weird story that i kind of started and that they picked up, that we were all reincarnations of greek gods, and we would learn this by finding a special object handed down from an ancestor. Mine was a broken-ass orange lamp from the 70s that I got when my great grandma passed away, which for some reason made me prometheus. I was a brooding type of kid lol. But for some reason we decided that since my girlfriend had this weird red spot in her iris in one eye, that she was "possessed by Bloody Mary" lol. We would go into the bathroom with her and turn the lights out and chant bloody mary, and then tuirn the lights on and she'd do scary shit XD. I was always subtly aware that this was play, and likely had no root in reality, but it was so easy to sink into at the time.

@@MantasticHams That's suspension of disbelief for you, it does not only apply to non interactive fiction like books or movies but is key to any form of fiction including the interactive role play you and your friends were engaging in. In effect you were cobbling together a collaborative narrative through improv acting and role play, hell it could be argued that everyone does this with every social group they participate in to some degree. We are always at best exposing a part of our personality tailored to fit the role we identify with in the group we are around at the time and pretty much expect the other participants to remain in character with their role too for the most part. As children this dynamic often explores and adopts more fantastical additions to the group narrative but then as children our ability to critically think about the stuff our peer just totally made up and not only reject it but call it out as not being part of the canon group narrative is less well developed. If your collage at work when you were 25 tried the same things probably both you and everyone else in the group would laugh at the fantastical elements they just plucked out of their asshole.

I haven't seen anyone mention it in the comments, but wondering if any of you fellow former Christians ever heard of Bob Larson. He had a show for a while (I want to say SciFi channel... how very fitting). My old pastor was obsessed with him and claimed to be an exorcist himself. I was subjected to many "sessions" at his hands with the help of my own parents. Nothing worse than holding down a 17 year old for hours on end while shouting Bible verses and being treated like absolute scum for allowing demons in. It wasn't demons, it turns out that being forced into marriage at 16 to a much older abuser, along with undiagnosed anxiety and BPD was the real reason behind my symptoms. It wasn't possession, they were panic attacks. I've been out of the church and away from my abuser for 14 years now, and it's so amazing to see it all from the other side. Thanks for your sharing your story, Larson sounds vaguely familiar, but I feel like I found a video critiquing him during my deconstruction, my pastor may have mentioned him once in a negative way. There were some things I got lucky in my christian bubble, a lot of my church had essentially partially deconstructed from their parents faith or from religious trama, but they ultimately remained religious, but with some understanding. I still deconstructed fully eventually. After going to a christian school and being exposed to a wider variety of denominations I heard quite a few stories of people with autism or adhd being subjected to exorcisms in their childhood. With the ones who might be in the right place for it I'm probably gonna send them this video.

The Buddhist view of demons is quite different from that of the Abrahamics. Here's one such tale: One day, the Tibetan teacher Milarepa left his cave to gather firewood. When he returned, he found that his cave had been taken over by demons. There were demons everywhere! His first thought upon seeing them was, “I have got to get rid of them!” He lunges toward them, chasing after them, trying forcefully to get them out of his cave. But the demons are completely unfazed. In fact, the more he chases them, the more comfortable and settled-in they seem to be. At this point Milarepa lets out a deep breath of surrender, knowing now that these demons will not be manipulated into leaving and that maybe he has something to learn from them. He looks deeply into the eyes of each demon and bows, saying, “It looks like we’re going to be here together. I open myself to whatever you have to teach me.” In that moment all the demons but one disappear. One huge and especially fierce demon, with flaring nostrils and dripping fangs, is still there. So Milarepa lets go even further. Stepping over to the largest demon, he offers himself completely, holding nothing back. “Eat me if you wish.” He places his head in the demon’s mouth, and at that moment the largest demon bows low and dissolves into space. Moral of the story: When dealing with the toughest challenges - the kind that involves the demons inside of us - brute force turns out to be a blunt instrument. Acceptance, kindness, and a willingness to open our hearts and minds to the learning ahead of us enable us to make the progress we seek.

So I exorcised the book, and he was like "that doesn't count it's still possessed" and I'm like "but I got rid of the demons..." (this was back when I was still Christian but academically curious about magical traditions in other religions) Also my Possession Score is: 5/8 according to your scale there.

Sounds like he had the logical equivalent of kids claiming "not it times infinity " that it was still possessed. Not a single Wiccan I know would ever curse anything, except very specifically against malicious wrongdoers. It would be Iike a neutral spell that shouldn't harm a person who just wanted to learn and wasn't intending to cause harm. The idea of thise kinds of spells are to turn the intent of the person back to themselves, rather than allow them to harm an innocent. IMO, no different than a Christian praying to God for protection or guidance.

Average joe here. Since early adolescence, a few people have accused me of either being a witch or having supernatural powers. This wasn't frequent, but by my early 30's I saw a pattern - People who'd been raised in oppressive, ultra-religious families AND were stressed out and prone to a little paranoia tended to level the witchy accusation, while folks who were more cheerful and optimistic by nature, maybe leaning more towards pronoia than paranoia, tended to articulate my supposed "gifts" as supernatural. It was a good lesson. I'm neither a witch or gifted with supernatural powers, just a fairly observant person. People see what they want to see, and interpret that in ways that fit with their world.

I totally know what he means about not noticing things in the bible when you're under "a certain hermaneutic". The fact that Luke 2:21-39 tells a tale of Jesus getting circumsized right after birth and having a few adventures in Jerusalem before going home is lost on most Christians -- when you tell them about this they're often shocked because they "know" that Jesus and his family fled to Egypt right after birth. This story, even when they've read it several times, washes over them and they can't internalize it.

Back in my day, the fastest way to go to hell was by playing Magic the Gathering. We tried to get around it by playing Pokémon instead, but turns out that the psychic types were actually demons themselves and Pikachu's tail was a Satanic symbol, so that was out. Well, we all pretended anyway, but there was still an underground Pokémon trading ring where we would meet secretly during recess at school. So I think I probably got possessed by a demon a long time ago. My supernatural powers have yet to materialize, but that doesn't stop my from trying to turn my lights on or off with my mind every day.

Currently reading the Bible for the first time. Gotten through Genesis, Exodus, and am on Leviticus. So far, my takeaway is that God creates problems (many of which are done through manipulation) in order to... solve them to show his power? But is also very jealous, angry, covets attention, is easily swayed by certain humans to show mercy (which is just so damning of God's intelligence and ability to regulate his/its emotions that it makes God look/seem manic). Slavery wasn't a deal breaker, but stealing is... but slaves need to be stolen (literally or through coercion) from someone initially to be enslaved. Don't "go into" anyone who isn't married to you... unless it's a servant, then adultery is fine. But yeah, it's mostly God fucking with people. God saw people were getting along too well, so he created many languages to confuse them and sow division. God wanted to make a point about his power, so he continually "hardened Pharaoh's heart" in order to show off more plagues, despite it being VERY obvious the point had already been made by the time the flies were released on Egypt, but God took over and decided, "lets do this 6 more times, and make it worse each time."

I was one of the youths in the Bondage Breaker and Stomping Out the Darkness (for teens 😁) era. I was never accused of being possessed myself but I definitely had friends who were. We went through a whole Sunday School series on how to avoid "opening yourself up to demonic influence." In my church demonic influence was like soft core possession. I never witnessed an exorcism but when they did happen in my denomination, they were more casual. Anyone could perform an exorcism and they usually involved a combination of rebuking the demon and dealing with whatever it was that caused the demon to gain a threshold. On the soft end of the exorcism spectrum, my bf at the time had a really toxic relationship with her strict parents and there were times when they were having an argument that they would command the demon to leave her. On the extreme end, a couple men in my church were called to the nurses office at a family church camp (one of them was the camp nurse) to find a fourteen year old girl who was "possessed." Several grown men were already trying to hold her down but she threw them across the room and her eyes were changing colors (or so they said). After rebuking the demon and praying, "God told them" that they needed to remove a necklace she was wearing and her cell phone (before smart phones), and when they did, she was immediately better. They asked her where she got the necklace, which had a Chinese symbol on it, and she said it was a good luck charm her boyfriend gave her.

This is so normal in México... I've been at least two times as a kid with a woman who claimed to be possessed by virgin Mary, in México if you're from an indigenous town you can always find the chaman/witch/magic pastor that will be possessed by someone.. even someone from the mayans and stuff.. i remember I was so afraid because the woman started to talk in some language, now that I remember I think it might be latin but I was so impressed because that was such a small town and I used to visit my granma from a big city where I lived, I remember thinking how can this woman not even have a cellphone but know latin words? She touched my shoulder and started to tell me how I felt which I mean it was exactly how I felt then she told me to wash myself in pink rose water while I said some things that I can't remember.. she was closing her eyes and looking up, it was scary but after I did the baths I was okay... i dont really know how she cured all that but... everyone went to her haha now that I'm the biggest skeptic I still have a lot of questions about those chamanes

What I get from these talks is how obvious it is that the history of religion is us grasping with fear of the unknown. The universe spawned us from the earth , breathed the breath of life in us, by giving us sentience and self awareness, and then abandoned us like an uncaring caretaker. We yearned for a caring creator but the universe in all its beauty and shining beings above seemed unconcerned for our plight. Then we created gods in our image, after our nature to fill the void.
