It's not so much that they speak English. If anyone's traveling there, I'd recommend that you pick up some basic Japanese like Mark does here. It's the least you could do as guests. Americans especially seem to expect people to know how to speak English no matter where they go.

I just got back from Mongolia. You've got to be there next and you'll love it. Meat in Mongolia has got to be the most inexpensive in the world. I found everything to be really cheap compared to in Thailand.
