All good tips, but I would reconsider putting your personal item in the overhead. Overhead bins fill up on most flights and you’re potentially taking space someone else needs for their roller bag or single piece of larger luggage (unless you’re in bulkhead of course and have to put everything up). Thanks for all your tips!

Exactly! Taking up more than my fair share of overhead bin space ensures others who board later end up gate checking their roll aboard and that is simply inconsiderate.

As others have said, you should not recommend putting your carry-on suitcase and another bag in the overhead bin thereby taking more space than alloted per person. That's one reason (a main reason) why overhead bin space becomes full quickly, and then bags have to be checked. You are allowed one space per person in the overhead bin.
@mmmhmmm_7
@mmmhmmm_7 Жыл бұрын
Definitely agree and hate that she told all of her viewers this. Especially now since checked bags aren't always making it to destinations. Being forced to check your carry on because someone selfishly didn't follow the rules, could mean your luggage never arrives and your trip is ruined. We are alloted a carry on and personal bag under the seat. Do not stick your personal bag in the carry on over head storage and steal room alloted to others!!

Can’t agree more; people take up way way more space than they should in overhead. I couldn’t fit mine so they opened up some overheads n I was in shock at all the stuff people put up there that takes up space! She should not have suggested that!

Always carry on only. But nooooooo -- don't put your personal item in the overhead. Airlines require that your personal item fit under the seat in front of you because that's where you're supposed to put it. Can you imagine the chaos if everyone stowed both of their items in the overhead? No plane has enough space for this.

I would never put my personal item in the overhead bin. Especially if it had my electronics in it still. Leaving aside the security issues, it’s bad manners to put both your luggage items up there. Otherwise I completely agree with you, and this is a great and helpful video.

Great tips but I disagree with putting more than the carry on in the overhead bins! Numerous flights have had overhead bins full because rude travelers have shoved 2-3 items there (also talking about the “shopping bags” and once on a return flight from Maui to Honolulu - Krispy Kreme donuts!! Seriously!!

Air Canada forced me to check my carry on in Dublin. No space in overhead bins. I arrived in Toronto, had to go through US customs, lightening at Toronto airport meant a delay in unloading all the checked luggage so was delayed getting through US customs. Missed my connection, had to spend the night in Toronto. All the airline allocated hotel rooms were taken, had to find and pay for hotel myself. Hotel cost was not reimbursed as promised, denied first time, on second attempt I got $200 airline credit note! The hours spent in lines, the near chaos, and traveling alone. All because the overhead bins were full. So yes, that tip to take up more overhead bin space then you should because your personal item is MEANT to be put under the seat in front of you. . . Airlines should not let that happen.

I agree. Her advice to put the backpack in the overhead takes up precious real estate that is for carry on only. You are allowed a personal item- ( that backpack is way too big for most international airlines) if that item is big and bulky that doesn't give you the choice to take away someone else's overhead because you want more leg room.
@NotSpockToo
@NotSpockToo Жыл бұрын
Most airlines state multiple places on their websites, at the airport, and on the airplane that the personal backpack must go under the seat in front of you and not in the overhead bin. The overhead bin is for your bigger suitcase. We have seen flight attendants pull items that should be under seats out of the overhead bins. Please don't tell people to put two items in the overhead as that uses up space for roller bags.

Nowadays, most people are trying to travel only with a carry on suitcase. The overhead bins don't have enough room for so many suitcases so it seems inappropriate to take up room with a suitcase and a backpack. Before Covid, I often did what you recommended. At the moment, I want to be more considerate of other travellers in hope that they'll be considerate of me.

Gate Check will happen more often because people put their personal bags in the overhead so... not a good suggestion. I just flew Delta return from Tokyo to Toronto via Atlanta. They announced several times (in several languages) on each flight for passengers to place only ONE item in the overhead and place it wheels first FLAT. The CA was standing near our seat so I know that passengers around us weren't putting two bags in the overhead. It was tight under the seat but I did have foot space and a small third bag to hold things I REALLY wanted during the flight.

Hmm. A couple of things to think about. I always have an extra shirt and underwear in my backpack. Even if carry on, just in case the suitcase gets gate checked. I also keep a longsleeve shirt or fleece available to wear on the plane. If the weather at your destination is different, say colder or wet. I will carry my raincoat, gloves, etc. also in my backpack. Same thing if there are anything you might need at your destination like documents or materials in the backpack.

I guess I'm different from most everyone else since I would only bring a checked bag (for any wheeled luggage, big or small) and a backpack for a personal item (which I put under the seat in front of me) when I travel overseas. I'm small in stature, cannot reach the overhead bins, and don't like imposing on others to lift my carry-on to and from the bins for me. My backpack has multiple pockets so I keep the things I need most in the front pockets where it's most accessible during the flight. And like others have pointed out, it'd be more considerate if you do NOT take more than your share of space in the overhead bins.

That is what I'm doing. I have herniated discs in my neck that are causing high levels of pain throughout my neck, shoulder, arm , and fingers. It's nice that the airline is going to transfer my checked bag for me and I don't have to lug it around the airport or request assistance to load it into the overhead compartment (I physically cannot lift my elbow above shoulder height.) I'm just bringing a backpack with me onboard with things that don't fit into my checked bag that will make it through security plus a snack and puzzle book.

I too don’t agree with putting the backpack in the overhead -it’s your personal item which is said to be able to fit under the seat in front of you! Carry on only! I would not put my personal item in the overhead bin and take up valuable space that other passengers might need. Otherwise I am already on board with your 3 pc packing system. One thing that I do is use a lightweight bag insert inside my personal item. That way I have a lot of little pockets to keep my little things like gum, eye drops, lip balm, pen, in as well as a few larger sections for my kindle and tablet, etc. I have a medium sized hero clip on it. And I just pull the whole unit out of my personal item and just clip it on to edge of the seat in front of me. Everything I will need during the flight is in there so I won't have to rummage around in my personal item. I also have a clip on my water bottle that I can hang up from the seat In front of me as well. The other difference in my system is that I have a small crossbody purse that contains all of my Important stuff such as my wallet, passport, etc. That stays on my body until I am through security and then it goes back into my personal item. Love your videos! I always learn something useful from you.

Most airlines only allow the carry on in the overhead bin, not the personal item, even coats until it's full of suitcases. Additionally, if you have TSA precheck, you don't need to separate your liquids. If you don't have that, your method works very well and is a reason not to put your cosmetics bag in your carryon.

Most of the airlines I fly with only allow 1 carry on and one personal item - together no more than 7-10kg depending on airline (often having to pay extra for the 10kg - no way would we get that backpack/laptop bag in the overhead, it is classed as personal and goes under the seat in front of you. And yes I do put my handbag in there with the stuff I need for the flight - tech equip, gum, water etc.

Just about every airline website I've seen describes a 'personal item' as a handbag or laptop case. Many have dimension and weight limits, especially internationally. Even if there are no explicit limits, taking a backpack equal in size to your carryon, and then taking up somebody else's overhead bin space isn't exactly 'genius', it's just greedy and selfish. No doubt the reason why some airlines now use tags to identify which bags can go overhead and which you have to keep with you at your seat. Congratulations on being part of the problem.

This week's packing advice is genius. I came up with a name for your method: Matryoshka packing method- because the apparel goes in the cubes which then go into the roller suitcase, and the items go into the mini backpack which then goes into the larger one- just like those dolls go into each other! Your three piece packaging system is superb. I love your super practical videos!

Some foreign carriers (Emirates) restrict economy & premium economy passengers to 1 carry-on baggage 22”x15”8” weighing no more than 15 pounds only. So, we were strategic when creating our mini carry-on. I used a Small Black Sling Crossbody Backpack by Seafew. It had an inner pocket for my tablet, a USB port for my charger and room for all my other flight essentials. I miniaturized my toiletries into a 5”x7” mesh pouch by carrying face wipes, teeth wipes, reusable floss stick and a moisture stick (nothing that would have to be in 3-1-1 bag. Plus, this sling also doubled as my EDC Travel bag thus allowing me to pack 6 days’ worth of clothes and 1 pair of dressy flats in my carry-on. I really enjoyed not having a giant backpack in my seat. I sat in a window seat and tucked it under my arm instead of placing it on the floor in front of me. The flight attendant had a clear view of my seatbelt.

"This video was sponsored by Level 8 luggage" This seems to work in practice, but fails *as soon as everyone does it*. That backpack is too big for 'personal items' on a lot of international flights. 40 x 30 x 10 cm is pretty common (that's Singapore Airlines, not some European budget airline). Consider the weight limit for airlines (such as Qantas and Air NZ) which is a combined weight of 7kg (14 pounds) for *both* bags.

The straps on backpacks without the luggage sleeve can be buckled into the opposite buckle making the straps a crisscross pattern that acts as a sleeve.

If people would only be considerate of fellow travelers. I have come across people who’s carry on is too big. Airline employees need to be stricter with wheeled luggage. If item can not put carry-on with wheels in the back and retracted handle on outside, I have seen too many bags that are put in long ways because they do not fit otherwise. They also have personal items that are big also. I have traveled carryon for more than 15 years. If I had extra that I needed I would send it fed-ex, especially if visiting family. That way I only had a personal bag. Which I put under seat in front of me, unless I was at bulkhead.

Thank you for all your excellent videos and advices. I will never ever fly only with a carry on bag as all my flights are international, 24 hour long ones. In my backpack, I carry a small messenger bag, in which I keep my passport, boarding pass, tickets, etc. along with my pen and phone. This I take out while going through security checks.

Carry on only. My soft side backpack (14lbs) is my main suitcase to go in the overhead bin. Large shoulder bag contains my purse and plane essentials like cords, eye mask and tablet for audio books.

Check in! Traveling for months with an afghan I have made for my mother. It is too chunky for me to go carry on only. Unless we go somewhere on a short trip in the EU as a graduation gift from my husband (I am only dreaming here). Thanks again for the pictures of PDX, it helps lighten my day to see my home state airport. Though I will not be seeing the TSA checkpoint for gate D and international travel. It is also the United Airlines gates.

I would love some tips on how to travel carry-on only for winter travel. Bulky coats, gloves, scarves, hat, boots, sweaters, etc take up much more valuable space than a swimsuit and sandals.

You have to switch up your wardrobe to more efficient warming layers, thin merino wool, puffer jacket, and the like. Wool has the ability to be reworn several times before needing laundered.

@@Debberdoon completely agree. I do layers and try to make most of them wool pieces except for my coat which is down puffer. I’ve tried to get more cashmere pieces as they are similar to wool but even lighter/less bulky. Quince has great pieces for good prices and second hand places are also good options.

I have a down jacket and a downstairs both of them compressed down to very small pieces. I also have another Lighter weight jacket that also folds into its own pocket and a small backpack as well

wear the coat or hold it in your hand if it's too warm. other than that, quality is the key word. bring a good quality coat (north face, patagonia, Mammut etc.) and you won't need thick sweaters or several layers underneath. same thing with shoes. I wear my Columbia boots with thin socks (the type you'd wear with regular snickers) and those take much less space than thick socks. good quality sweaters will take less space and keep your warmer. in cold weather you also sweat less, there's really no need for a brand new outfit for each day (although that's true for any season). for those who can afford it, good quality items will help make the packing easier

Recently, I have switched permanently to the "Carry-on" mode on my trips 😅 especially due to the long time of waiting on the belts and, mostly because of the high value of the fees (even with no price reduction on the air tickets) here in Brazil, as well as in some other Latin America airlines 🤷🏻‍♂️. The cost was to waste my old Cases & Bags to comply with the required dimensions (Cabin & Underseat). See ya, blue skies 🤙🏻🍀📷

Carry on only for years now. I put my liquids bag in my backpack. Once I’m past security, I take out any liquids I need on the flight and slip the rest of the bag into the roller suitcase. I’ve put my backpack in the luggage compartment if I see available space but also it’s not hugely inconvenient. I have a pouch for my frequently used bits - headphones, cables, hand sanitizer and that goes in the pouch on the backseat for east access. I especially hate digging through my suitcase at my feet when I’m in a middle seat.

To parrot many other people in the comments. Domestically in the United States, all airlines are repeatedly reminding passengers at the gate by the gate agent and on the plane by the flight attendant that the smaller personal item is so be placed underneath the seat in front of you to accommodate more of the larger overhead items. The only exception to this is being in a bulkhead seat where there is no seat in front of you and due to FAA rules, everything must be stowed for taxi, takeoff, and landing. My only other exception is if you are one of those 6 ft 5 inch people where even the extra leg room seats are not nearly enough and you really actually need the room for your feet. Which statistically speaking, is not most passengers.

Carryon ONLY! I use a modified version of your method: rolling carry-on and a backpack. Inside the backpack is a small soft-sided case (about the size of a Kindle) holding my electronic cables, external battery, etc. Rolling suitcase is gate-checked, backpack is stowed overhead, and softcase is put into the seatback pocket (it is really that small). This means I can fit my 6'3" frame into the seat and (hopefully) enjoy ALL the legroom the airline has generously provided!
