Hey, can you do stories of samurai who've actually fought yokai?
@TalesofDawnandDusk3 ай бұрын
Don't get me wrong, the Warring States period is super cool and all, but I find these stories so much more interesting. The way the court and the warriors had to maneuver around each other and seeing the beginnings of what would become samurai culture, are far more appealing in my book. Plus, the language of the Heian period has an artistry about it that still remains unrivaled. But then, given what I do on this platform, I admit I'm very very biased.

Also the Kamakura Mongol invasion
@shirankedo-ib8uv3 ай бұрын
Just watching the anime "The Heike Story" gives an overview of key figures and events. The currently airing anime "The Elusive Samurai" is also very interesting, as it covers the fall of the Hōjō clan during the late Kamakura period, when they governed the Kantō region as the family of the Genji shōgun. The Mongol invasions are well-documented in both Japanese and Chinese sources, offering detailed insights into the battles and strategies. Translating and reading the Japanese Wikipedia with DeepL provides as much information as reading a whole book.

I don’t know if it’s the original Japanese version or a modern version so it’s easier to understand, but I really want that book and I’m saving to buy it soon :) I already have the one they released of Ise Monogatari, and it’s gorgeous 😔👌❤️❤️❤️

Here is some more information about the start of Yoritomo's campaign. The first defeat was at a place called Mt. Ishibashi, just south of modern day Odawara. It is said that, as Yoritomo and a few hundred of his closest followers were bedding down for the night, a great thunderstorm whipped up, and in the storm, Oba Kagechika lead a force of several thousand Taira samurai in an ambush. The legend goes that Yoritomo was forced to hide in a hollow tree trunk while his personal bodyguards led Kagechika and his men away. Eventually, Yoritomo was able to escape down the mountain and find a boat, which took him across Sagami Bay to his allies, the Miura Clan. This right pissed Yoritomo off, as during the Hogen Rebellion of 1156, Kagechika and his older brother Oba Kageyori had served under Minamoto no Yoshitomo, though Kageyori had to go into retirement for a while after taking an arrow to the knee (true story). This left Kagechika as head of the Oba Clan. After the Heiji Rebellion, Taira no Kiyomasa engaged in a huge public relations campaign, recruiting several former Minamoto supporters to his cause - including Oba Kagechika, who became a prominent commander in the Taira army. So after the route at Mt. Ishibashi, Yoritomo likely viewed Oba Kagechika as a traitor. We know this because, two months after Ishibashi, as Kagechika tried to lead a force of between 5,000 and 8,000 Taira samurai to link up with Kyomasa when they were cut off and surrounded by the massive Minamoto force. Kagechika ordered his men to dismount and scatter, hoping Kyomasa would punch through the Minamoto at Fujigawa and relieve him. When Kyomasa's forces routed and ran away, Kagechika knew it was over. He surrendered to Yoritomo, and after his brother Kageyori -who had remained loyal to the Yoritomo as an advisor- declined to beg for his life, he was executed on the banks of the Katase River about 5-10km south of where I sit typing this. Oba Kageyori would go on to design and build Yoritomo's palace and to oversee the construction of the pond at Tsurogaoka Hachiman Shrine in the center of Kamakura.

35:26 I don't quite understand it, but I'm suddenly have the urge to leave comments. So I'll say this; considering how young he was for the whole war, and that a war like this meant that so many of the nobles hadn't actually seen the young emperor, it strikes me that if something happened to Antoku early on it would have been very easy to replace him with a Taira son and just deal with grandma. Wouldn't that just be the final kick in the teeth for the poor young emperor? Only valued as a figurehead, with a figure we could have lied about.

Its crazy to me the realization of time and knowledge. If you would fill all the experience and and memory of all the people that lived in one generation at that time. And u would watch it like a Netflix show to study how this era truely was. Then u would probably need more time for these 40 to 50 years, per person, then humanity is concidered to be advanced... Its by far wider then it is long, so to speak.
