noticed you didn't spray water into the open side of the Gen Tent which is what would happen in a rain/wind storm - I think there would've been some water on the generator panel if you did

Thanks for making the video. Yes, I recommend that the company change the strap to a heavy duty & wide velcro & the side plastic bracket supports changed to a quality painted metal or aluminum material.

I just ordered a GenTent after watching your video, trying to get it installed now. On the camouflage GenTent, I can't really understand that one myself, you camouflage it so that the deer don't see the GenTent, yet as loud as the generator is, I don't think they are going to get close enough to you to worry about seeing it, lol.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Most people are unaware how dangerous it is to run a generator on the edge of your garage. It should be at least 25 feet from the garage, and that puts you out in the rain. Have a good one.

The storm that was coming to New England in the last 48 hours turned out to be a bust for us here in the Hartford area but I had my generator plugged in and ready. Interestingly enough it was a predator 9000 very similar to the predator that you are using in this video. I’ve had a mix of opinions from people some who say that generators can be left out in the elements because they’re designed to be able to handle that and then there’s other people who feel that that’s not a good idea. I fall in the camp of those who think it out to be covered but I don’t exactly have all the answers with regard to that. We were going to buy a containment box from Ace Hardware for the generator but I agree with you about the cost and the hassle and I kind of like the canopy idea. When you buy the canopy does it come with the skirt (either the one that you can’t see through or the one that you can see through) Or is that bought separately only? I was glad to see that there was a vent on the side and I was concerned about the heat of the generator perhaps melting the cover. Thank you for your review.

Thanks for the video! I wish I had thought of that. I have a covered trailer I put my generator in if I need it. I have had the generator for 6 years now and have never used it. I started it about a week ago and it fired on the first pull sitting around for a year. It's a Coleman Powermate 8750/7000 with a Honda GX390 engine. We are on rural electric and have a transfer switch on our transformer pole provided by the electric cooperative. I had a pigtail for my genset wired into the transfer switch box in the rare event I would need it. Unfortunately the pole is over 100 feet from the garage and I would have to go get it setup in very bad weather. I should build a doghouse for it. One of these could work. I do want to keep my unit in my heated garage until I need it. I might consider throwing it in the back of my pickup with this canopy on it and back it up to the pole when needed.
@doublewide6

Putting it in the back of a pickup would be a good solution. Those GX390 are good reliable engines.

Good bit of kit Bob . I know you folks get a lot power outage in the winter . Alot of power lines in the UK are under ground , So not many people have a back up generator . Perhaps you noticed it when you had your football here in the day. Regards Pete.
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 7 жыл бұрын
In the US there are many power lines underground, but you are right, we do have many power outages. I imagine flooding can cause problems for underground power lines, but I feel the biggest problem is actually trees being too close to power lines. Since Hurricane Sandy they cut back 75 yards to each side of the major power lines running over mountains in my area. Thanks for commenting.

Great intro, I'm glad companies are trusting you in reviewing their products. I wonder how much noise it can reduce while in use. Living in florida generators are a must but theft is a big problem. If they can somehow integrate that it would be a great improvement. However intresting product.
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 7 жыл бұрын
When I interviewed my contact at Gentent, he explained that they had outside laboratory testing certification that their Gentents do not cause any added heat that could cause problems to a generator running. I do not believe that the Gentent cuts down on noise. As far as people steeling your generator, I guess you would need to lock it up. I'm happy you like the product. I think it is a really great solution to a major problem with generators.

@@doublewide6 There's an urban legend about the guy who parked his portable generator right outside his bedroom window so he could hear it running at night. He woke up to hear the motor running, but his window AC unit had quit. He walked outside and found that a thief had stolen his generator, but had left a running lawn mower as a decoy.

Not bad. Know if they only add a little bit more density to it then they could claim that it would reduce the noise of the generator of it. Kind of like those x-ray vests that you wear that are flexible. They would have a winner and I'll gladly take that chicken dinner for the suggestion.

Yes, we had fun making the Hurricane, I know we did a good job because both my kids were soaking wet. Gentent does have Gentents for their inverters. They appear to be about the same, but smaller to fit your inverter. It also looks like they use a different system to attach them to inverters. That is great that you use their product already, how is it working for you? Thanks for watching.

We use a Kevlar ratchet buckle strapping system for inverter generators from 1000W to over 7000W. The mounting straps to the belly of the inverter. We reuse the same size frame setup and same size GenTent canopy. We can put two 2000W inverters in parallel under a single GenTent.

I have this same Generator and I would like to see the way you connected the hardware on the muffler side. There was no clearance to mounting that particular side because of the muffler cover being so close to the generator frame. I would have to modify that shield to make it fit. That seems to be a problem for me.
@Pk3_Garage
@Pk3_Garage 2 жыл бұрын
I had the same issue. I ended up melting the clamp and had to buy a new one. I loosen the muffler cover screws and move the muffler cover as far to the left as I could. That gave me enough room to place the clamp on the frame.

Nice thorough review buddy, I agree with the elastic straps. Eventually they'll wear out. Good product otherwise. Nor'easter baring down on us tonight into tomorrow. 60-70 mph winds. Hope I don't have to roll my gen out.

Same thing here, lots of wind. So far the power is staying on.
@GenTentSafetyCanopies
@GenTentSafetyCanopies 7 жыл бұрын
The straps are Gor-tex outdoor rated. This said, the rubber in the elastic does break down overtime. Elastic was chosen over velcro'd stiff straps (and early design) due to ease of use and providing the same holding tension on all four corners. We haven't had any elastics break down yet in the 5 years the product has been on the market. We recommend releasing the elastic straps when the generator is stored away (unless it's stored outside!) and when the canopy is left on.

Hi Bruce, be sure to get plenty of ventilation in the unattached garage and recommend not to enter it for 15-30 minutes after the generator shuts off. Generators produce 1500X the CO than automobile engines (CPSC test results) which can overcome a person pretty quickly. We had an incident two Thanksgiving's ago in our town - similar unattached garage scenario; the person died when she went to refuel the generator after it had been off for 6 hours. In her case the doors were closed.

Mark, We had quite a storm come through last night. This was the first event that I got some real use on my Gentent. I am used to having the generator in my detached garage with the windows and doors all cracked open. It was raining, but really windy. I noticed several trees damaged this morning, and I saw 2 mailboxes broken off at the ground. The Gentent preformed flawlessly, no moisture and it didn't blow away. This was a real test for me, and I just wanted to let you know the Gentent worked great. Thanks Bob

They range from $149.99 to $199.99 and that includes free ground shipping. They are available on GenTent.com but also at many dealers. We are also making one for Champion Power Equipment, look for the Storm Shield by Champion. The price differences have to do with whether the GenTent can be mounted directly to your particular generator (75% of the time this is true) or if your particular generator needs some kind of special mounting adaptation (square tubular frame, panel that blocks the clamp, etc). There's a fit selector at the top of the GenTent site and we offer a free detailed fit analysis.

Where does the exhaust exit from the tent?
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 7 жыл бұрын
The tent does not cover the muffler. I know that Carbon Monoxide stays low, but being warm exhaust some may rise into the tent. But the top of the tent is vented, and my guess is that is why the top is vented. Maybe the manufacturer will chime in. Thanks for your question hopefully, we get a definitive answer for you. Bob
@GenTentSafetyCanopies
@GenTentSafetyCanopies 7 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct Bob. The vent is there to (1) pressure relief in high winds (2) vent any gasses from exhaust or refueling. We leave the muffler and other areas open so that the generator cooling is not impeded.
