I love Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Rush- all the great 1970s prog rock bands. But, to me at least, Gentle Giant are number one. They're my favourite band from this era at blending all those different genres: rock, jazz, soul, classical, even funk- into a bewitching, multi-layered, whimsical and intricate whole. This boxset is absolutely beautiful to behold and truly a work of art. I could sense your excitement in the video, Phil and no wonder. You can tell this is a band I love as well as I wouldn't normally gush over these sets but this is such an exception. What an incredible set to own. Amazing.

This was incredibly generous of you. I would never be able to afford such a rare treasured set as this myself and I can't tell you how delighted I was to watch Phil's fabulous unboxing of this and see the signed photo and book. Thank you so much for making this video happen and enabling Phil to acquire this set.

@damienflyer6754 Hi there! Yes indeed I am a serious collector. Heck, I got a PO box specifically so there won't be daily deliveries (and keep the post office in business). Since SoT I must've acquired a hundred or so, minimum. As for SoT it was an amicable departure and still remain friends with Pete.

I saw this box set in a local store and was contemplating buying it. You may have sold me on it after watching the video. Didn't realize how much stuff was inside. Funny story, my family and I grew up in the same town as Gary Green and his wife was our family friend. She'd always say that Gary was going to band practice and I figured he was in a local pub band until I was older.

Another great day Phil 😂❤ Two cd boxes arrived today. Caravan : The Decca/Dream Years & Tim Poole Both totally awesome. It's cooler in Western Australia which is so much more civilised. So with this amazing music , and an Indian for tea tonight ( our local curry house is called Scottish Tartan ) this will be a very pleasant evening. PS : I love those cd box sets. Reasonably cheap , great booklets and a great selection of music. Thanks Phil Greetings from Western Australia

The great thing about the box set is that it doesn't duplicate many of the live releases that have come out over the years - and the tour history - I love it!

Unfortunately I'm commenting 20+ hours after this video, but I bought this when it came out. Outstanding band and outstanding boxed set. Listen to a band like Spocks Beard, and they do the a capella stuff clearly influenced by GG. If you've not yet dived in id recommend starting from the beginning and listening to each studio album from 70 to 80. I quite like the later 70s albums, even giant for a day, as it's a good attempt to place themselves in the newer styles of music. As with these madfish boxes, it's the live stuff which is an attraction! Great stuff!

Hi Phil, and thanks for the look at the box. I have been a big G.G. fan for the last 50 yrs, saw them several times when they played in So.Cal. USA, always amazing. You are in for a surprise when you give "Giant For a Day" a spin. They made some incredible music in the 10 yrs that they existed. They were a unique band, being that they did not duplicate their studio sound in live situations, most of the time, but they did change the arrangements which was good (as you'll hear when playing the live discs). Enjoy !!!

I may be a tad off on the details, but if memory serves, 1 copy from the original pressing of the box, came with a gold coloured piece in the jigsaw where the "missing" piece is located. Whomever got that copy was given an award of a full-sized (or almost) mirror with the Gentle Giant 'In A Glass House' design (much like the one on your CD jewel case). Somewhere on KZbin I'm sure it's easily locatable, where it shows the winner.

Hi Phil - WOW that is amazing. These box sets are amazing aren't they - I collect some when I can afford them, but not at this level. I have a few of their CD's, I think they were on the outer circle maybe because the songs were too complex, or quirky for general consumption, and the melodies were hidden deeper into the songs. Maybe, as a general comment - the songs weren't strong enough? I dont know - and maybe they were just plain unlucky? Lets face it the competition wasnt bad was it lol. Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Tull, etc etc etc and our pockets can only stretch so far. My fav song of theirs is Freehand. There's some great BBC live footage from 1978 that just smokes - absolutely brilliant. Amazing box set. Cheers Doug

Phil, First album I ever bought from Gentle Giant was Three Friends. It is still my favorite album from them, an all-time top 20 album. But, Acquiring the Taste, Octopus, Power and the Glory, Free Hand and Glass House are brilliant too. A great run by the band. I came to the band when I was reading an interview of Triumph's great guitarist Rik Emmitt. He was talking about his big influences, Steve Howe from Yes, Steve Morse from the Dixie Dregs, etc and mentioned Gary Green from Gentle Giant. Now, being a guitarist, I was already down the rabbit hole with Howe and Morse. Obviously, I was an admirer of Emmitt and it was him talking about Green and Gentle Giant that started me down that rabbit hole. They are one of my favorite bands, no matter the genre. In the Prog world they rank just behind Yes, Rush and Genesis, but ahead of King Crimson, ELP and Kansas. Not bad company in my opinion. This is a stellar box set and as you said there is no skimping. If possible, there would have been a back stage pass to a GG concert attached to this box set. Definitely put together from a fans perspective. Quite possible that whoever was in charge of putting this set together is a fan.

A lot of people say to me why do you buy a boxset when you already have the individual albums?. Well my answer to that is just look at this boxset and the Wishbone Ash one and great extra stuff you get, lots of live performances that you are not likely get anyehere else and a wonderful book full of great information. Fantastic stuff, Phil.

I’m a huge GG fan. Have been since the early 70s. Hard to say which album I like the most. But I would recommend doing a hard listen of Three Friends. It’s a concept album that imo is unlike the others. A couple of years ago, the fan GG website published a guy’s dissertation on GG specifically Three Friends. It was a very interesting read.

This is insane!! 😅 I've never seen anything like it!! All the history...alone is a treasure within itself. Heard Gentle Giant in 73'. Collected their entire discography...first on LP in the 70s analog age then on cd in the digital age.. The first four Gentle Giant albums differ from other periods of their career. Even though In A Glass House reflects some of the early material it is an actual transition into something else. It falls between Octopus and Power And The Glory and its a combination of the earlier style and the development of what revealed on Power And The Glory. The first 4 albums were more magical less confined to a personal agenda of the record company to either sound more like Yes or perhaps just generally more commercial. The first 4 albums could have sounded more magical and affected your listening experience differently because of the presence of Phil Shulman. That's always a possibility and it is a fact that they sounded differently after his departure. With the exception of "Inmate's Lullaby " , ( which is reminiscent of their quirky writing style on the early albums), the rest of Glass House is stylistically based on a harder edge of Rock riffing ....which Gary Green always did...but this time it was different somehow. It has a lot to do with why the first 4 albums are in a class of their own. Phil Shulman had reasons for leaving and no doubt in my mind that your kids take priority over your music career. It's very hurtful to your kids when you're in the music business. The cool thing about Phil Shulman is that he left this music for people to enjoy. It's a short time period but a really interesting one.

If you're interested in the 'boots', the Brussels/Dusseldorf concerts are the best sounding. For me, those alone made my purchase well worth the money, not to mention that the remastered catalog sound fantastic!! All of the remasters I've purchased in the past, these sound the best by far... with the exception of the newer, individual deluxe sets with remixes by Steven Wilson, which are jaw-dropping!! My copy of this box does not have the autographs, but I love it!!! GG have long been in my Top 5 favorite bands of all-time, and this is a must box for all GG fans. I'm so happy that, after all this time since its release, that you were able to acquire a copy for yourself. Kudos to those folks that helped make that happen! Enjoy!!!

When the box came out Steven wilson had done several albums remix of GG, and he had done Three Piece Suite which is a remix of the tracks from the first 3 albums that they managed to find the multi tracks of. thus making us all assume that the other tracks from the first album are not possible for re-mixing and 5.1 ing . Thus the bluray in this box was and still is a big surprise and sought after disc, and I dont believe it was ever put out as a separate disc
