Lately, I've been obsessed with this song and I came across this video. I can't decide if the guitar playing or singing is better. Doesn't matter, they're both fantastic. Really nice!

john Hartford wrote this while he was working in a field, traveling to the next field, picking food to be used by the country, at that time. Glen picked it up, and it made him famous. John died without much of the profit, but he didn't write this song to become rich - God gave him the voice and mind to give us this amazing piece of work. @@crisrose521 He told this story often - i actually heard him play once in west virginia - back in late 70s (i used to cave there) during a blue grass festival. He took a moment to relate this story before playing. He never took to richness - As God expects

John Hartford was a Steamboat Pilot and a hell of a musician. Gentle on my mind is one of my favorite songs of all times. The first time I heard it was a cover by none other than the King himself, Elvis. Such a beautiful song. Rest In Peace John, Elvis, and Glenn.

You've done a fine job covering one of the greatest songs of modern popular music. It's a sure sign of a truly great song when so many artists can cover it and have hits with it. Artists as varied as Dean Martin (see comment below), Aretha Franklin, Sinatra, Elvis, John Hartford (the composer of the song), and of course Campbell's iconic version have had hits with this tune. As recently as 2014 a cover of this song won a Grammy for The Band Perry. According to BMI, this is the second most played song ever on the radio in the USA.
