FINALLY! I've just started watching the show, have only finished the 3rd episode, but I thought it'd be enough so I wouldn't get spoiled by this video. All this information is so fascinating, especially since I've been interested in designing the Jane Eyre musical. Yes, it's a decade prior to Gentleman Jack, but the silhouettes and many elements are still very similar. As for the show, I'll be honest in saying that I didn't take to it very quickly and I'm still not enamoured with it after the 3rd episode, but I do like the characters very much so I'll keep watching.

Thanks for the great video! What do you call the kind of shirt that Anne Lister wears in most of the scenes (It's a man's shirt, I think)? The one with the stand-collar that has a scoop out of the back of the collar, and the big, drapey sleeves.

Hi Dash! Thank you so much for commenting. Yes, it's a man's shirt but I am not certain what the proper name is. I always called it a scoop front collar, but that isn't the technical name for it. It would usually be made of linen and the collars attached separately.

One thing I've noticed is the fact that a lot of scenes are color coordinated. In the scene where all of Anne Walker's relatives have gotten together to complain about Anne Lister, every single person is wearing purple and the room is purple....I love the costumes in To Walk Invisible. Emily Bronte's lightning print dress still haunts my dreams.

Hi Cinema, thanks for commenting. It was a while back but Tom mentioned that they used the existing decor of the interiors (including all of the stunning wallpapers) and then coordinated the fabrics.

Thanks Gisele, I have to check, but I thougt that I looked at Ramsay Bolton a few years back when I did Westeros. As far as Sansa, I have done all of her costumes. Only think is it's all over the place. I'll see if I can do an update in the near future.

I haven't seen this show though I did see a standalone programme (again on the BBC) on the same subject in 2010 "The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister" with Maxine Peake in the title role. Suranne Jones seems to be one of the actors/actresses who has escaped "the curse of Coronation Street"* though she's not the only one. From the show I watched in 2010 (and the documentary that accompanied it) Miss Anne Lister didn't seem a very nice piece of work. I like Gemma Whelan though, who I understand is playing AL's sister so maybe I should watch one episode and see how I feel. * Coronation Street for folks outside the UK is a long-running soap opera and sometimes when actors have left it to try their hand at other things they have not been successful leading to the saying "the curse of Coronation Street". That said, some players, including Suranne Jones, have forged successful careers post-Coronation Street.
