00:00 Introduction
We were inspired to wash a suit in the washing machine after we attended the Laundry Camp by the Laundry Evangelist at the Mall of America. If you ever have the chance to attend, we can highly recommend it.
The simple answer is because there are techniques you can use to wash them in your machine without any fear of damaging the garments and therefore, save money that you otherwise would have had to spend at the dry cleaners. Wouldn't a wool suit get ruined and shrink in the wash? You might be wondering. Again, the answer is no. Not if you're using the proper techniques.
02:26 Step By Step Washing Process
First to start out with, you're going to want to make sure that the garments in question are properly folded in order to minimize excess agitation that might occur during washing. You should then simply use those folding techniques with two added caveats. First of all, turn your trousers and/or your waistcoat inside out before folding them so that any potential felting will be on the inside of the garments. Of course, your jacket will end up inside out using the folding method we outlined as normal. Second, you
should end all folding processes not by folding into thirds but by rolling from the bottom to the top.
Next, place each individual rolled garment into its own separate mesh washing bag. The bag should also be rolled up as tightly as possible and secured with safety pins as necessary.
Next, add an appropriate amount of cleaning agent to your washing machine depending on the number of garments being washed. A general ratio of about one tablespoon per garment works well for small loads and for larger loads, just follow the standard directions for your specific machine. A gentle cleaning agent like wool and cashmere shampoo should be added to the drawer of the machine if you are washing wool suits, and soap flakes can be put directly into the drum of the machine if you're washing non woolen suits.
04:48 Drying Techniques
A word of warning here, don't use your dryer as the heat and agitation that will occur inside the machine are prime conditions for felting your garments which of course, you don't want rather each of your garments should be laid flat in their natural shapes on a drying rack. You can speed up this drying process a bit by first laying a clean towel down on a work surface. With each item in its original shape, gently roll the item up in the towel like a sleeping bag to remove some of the excess water. Wait a few seconds, unroll the towel, and then place the garments on a drying rack. You can reshape or block your garments a bit with your hands while they're on the drying rack just to make sure that everything is shaped as properly as possible. After most of the moisture has evaporated, you can move your jacket from the drying rack back to its original hanger just to make sure that its shoulders and other padded areas dry in their natural shape.
07:04 Hand-Washing & Spot Treatment
Hand washing suits is actually a little bit trickier than machine washing because working these structured garments around in a basin and trying to wash them completely can be a little bit unwieldy.
For spot treatment of specific areas, all you have to do is use a small amount of the relevant cleaning agent and a little bit of warm water and gently blot at the stain. Don’t scrub at it or you might felt woolens and otherwise damage different types of fibers.

I have always hand washed my suit jackets and blazers and all sensitive apparel. I never trusted them to any machine even if they are placed in a secured mesh bag. Hand washing is still and always will be, the best. My technique: as always, fold the garment properly, then soak them in a mild detergent dissolved in a large basin. Let stand for around 10-15. After, just press on the jacket several times to allow the water to flow through the garment. Rinse in the same manner about 2-3 times. Dry the usual manner through a rack allowing water to just drip down. When most of the water has gone, you may hang the jacket the usual way to allow it to air dry. A fan will usually speed up the process. I never iron my suits or jackets unless necessary. Good wool suit fabrics usually don't need ironing.

@JoseAlbarGKato
@JoseAlbarGKato 3 жыл бұрын
@@munazahadnan9838 Actually, structural lining et al will not lose it's shape by the soaking and pressing in mild soapy liquid. It gets damaged if you hang it to dry. The pressure of the weight of the fabric plus absorbed liquid will cause sagging. To prevent that, always dry your suits and delicate clothing apparel on a flat rack, and only hang them when they are close to being dry. As I mentioned, a fan speeds up the drying process. Don't fear handwashing your suits. I think you should be more scared putting them in a machine, even if they are in any garment mesh bag.

As a result of learning this, I have washed my down-filled, long coat, 3 shortie coats (2 are wool), 2 of my husband's 3 piece wool suits, & 1 other 3 piece suit. I am crazy enough to try this. I have washing bag, an old rolled up wool brown suit jacket, (I used a pair of spare shoelaces to tighten the pack even more). The package is in the machine now, I will report back soon. I washed sweaters and suit trousers previously with great success, so I hope this will work fine. I have removed it from the machine, now it is drying on a flat surface. The color is fine, no sight of fading or any damage. Tiny greasy looking spots here and there, but I think they were before. I used a short gentle cycle on 30C, so this explains why greasy stuff not removed completely. No sight or feel of any felting or structural damage. Smells petty good. It is wrinkled a bit, but it looks normal. I think it will be fine. After a few days, its completely dry, and perfect. It worked! Huge thanks!

don't do it... my family was in the dry cleaning business for about a hundred years. I'm no longer in the business so I have no skin in the game. What I can tell you is that you definitely don't want to do this, felting is not what he is describing. The reason that we have dry cleaned wool garments for this many years is because water damages wool. It's the expanding and contracting of the fibers that creates felting not only the mechanical action. It's really not smart to do this especially if we're talking about five six seven hundred or a thousand dollar suit. Ridiculous!
@Dustwheel
@Dustwheel 4 жыл бұрын
@@lth9520 it has to do with wool being hydrophilic and the fibers are somewhat asymmetrical. So when the wool absorbs water, the fibers swell and come apart. This will happen whether or not mechanical action is used. So as the wool dries, the fibers tend to tangle or lock together, which is considered felting. Essentially a garment requires a flushing of solvent, preferably dry in wools case, and mechanical action in order to remove soils/stains/odors from a garment. Fyi...dry solvent is still a wetting agent, but is called dry because it is not water. Water swells fibers. In addition, you have to have forms to finish a wool garment properly. I can go on forever so I will end here...hope I answered your question. Please ask me anything about dry cleaning. It's one of the most misunderstood elements of garment care.

Just to further support the idea that water alone doesn't shrink or ruin wool I've been using pure wool or nearly pure wool garments (usually military surplus) for a variety of outdoors activities such as late year camping, fishing, hiking, etc. Getting wet and air drying is a very common occurrence with these activities. The only time I've shrunk wool is when they've accidentally been tossed into the normal washing cycle with other garments.

It looks like comments show this washing method is working. I have used a shower to hose down wool garments, but now I'm going to keep this roll method as another option. I want to insert a bit of caution: the ingredients used to make a suit include other elements that can distort, shrink and bleed color, so it might be wise to know what to look for: lining--vintage linings can be rayon or acetate, which can shrink and the color can bleed. interfacing--traditionally this was called 'horsehair canvas' and had horsehair and cotton woven together, later it was just cotton, now mostly a fusible polyester that is safe to wash. tape--twill tape is cotton and can shrink with heat like steam, this is sewn inside down the collar roll line. shoulder pads--just be sure that you don't scrunch them up, mold them to their original shape when drying. sleeve head--a wool piece inserted around the top of the sleeve to create a rounded top of sleeve, this may need to be molded back into shape so that the sleeve top doesn't cave in. buttons--these can be leather, such as woven leather and that can bleed color, the metal shanks may be steel which will rust, so it's best to remove the buttons unless you know that they are plastic.

I machine washed my wool overcoat and it’s the same as it was before machine washing. It’s expensive so I was hesitant at first but it was badly stained with sauce and I don’t think dry cleaning will clean it properly.

Been washing my everyday cheap blazers and also pants for years in the washing machine, then gently drying and using steam to fix wrinkles - works like a charm! For cheap garments I really did not see the point of paying 20-50% of the garment price for just cleaning. I will also try this on my 800$ woolen BOSS suit as I dont like to waste money on dry chemical cleaning at all :D + the wear from each cleaning is many times actually noticeable.

Does it work for fused suit jackets? I tried washing my semi-cheap woolen suit by Tiger of Sweden, some of the parts where the canvas is fused now have unsightly wrinkles that don't seem to steam out

I have used a product called DRYEL to clean wool blazers, polyester blazers, etc with great success. The product has a special treatment for stains. After the stain treatment the garment(s) are placed inside a bag with a cleaning sheet and tossed into the dryer on low. The garments come out fresh smelling and have new life. I have a black wool blazer with black velvet lapels that is at least 25 years old. I have used the DRYEL product on it for years. It still looks new. Best wishes.

Have you experienced any shrinkage? I've been at an impasse forever 'cause I got several blazers from the thrift store that need washing and I'm stuck between hand washing or doing a Dryel type of deal. Really trying to avoid going to the dry cleaner here. I've also seen a DIY Dryel where you dip a flour sack towel into a solution of water, borax, and vinegar or OxiClean and put that towel in w/ a sack of clothes, but I'm worried about shrinkage seeing as they'd go in the dryer. One blazer's wool, one's linen, and another cotton/polyester.

For those wondering, 3 things are needed to make wool felt. Cleaning agent(is soapy water), friction, and heat. That is why this method and some in the comments work so well. If you feel truly too scared, you can use an at home dry cleaning kit. I've only taken a garment to the dry cleaners once and tbh I view it as unnecessary. Its bad for the garments and bad for the environment.

@@dismurrart6648 That's easy enough for the coat, since there's usually a long-sleeved, collared shirt between it and the skin. Much harder for trousers both because of exposed skin of legs and because of trousers being sat-upon, thus contacting whatever surface one is sitting on.

@@TWX1138 I don't wear trousers so I don't have easy answers there but I wear slips to protect all my skirts and dresses. Skin oils and washing are two of the most damaging things to our clothing and you can steam wool and brush it to help maintain.

I have been washing wool for years (jumpers and trousers). I noticed your mesh bag wash branded 'Woolite' which is the brand of cleaner I use. I just pop it straight into the drum and use a cold wool cycle or delicate cycle and dry flat as in the video. Woolite might have some lanolin in it to condition the fibres too as they often feel softer afterwards. I have never been brave enough to try a jacket. I am going to try it!

I wouldn't wash a fancy coat, but I hardly buy anything that won't wash. I almost always buy cotton. I found that that the express cycle marked my trousers badly, but I think that was the fast spin. I don't give my wife my favourite stuff to wash, I do it on delicate cycle , cold setting ( so 20 deg. on a nice day) with slow spin in a mesh. OK, she gets to do work stuff, underwear etc. I wouldn't like to deprive her completely! It's nice to get some heavy jackets washed during the summer. (UK) I don't think really dirty stuff would wash well rolled up.

@MoonfaceMartin88 5 жыл бұрын
@@amauta5 Pretty well. I certainly haven't destroyed any one of them. Just two pointers: a) You need to make sure, the suits are completely free of any non-solvable dirt. This seems pretty straightforward if you think about it, but dirt doesn't get washed away from inside a tight roll inside a washing net. b) Roll it tight and seal it really, really well. Also very straightforward, but washing machines develop a lot of momentum. So if you think you rolled and tightened every package well, do it better.

I always figured that suits could be washed because I know that dry cleaning is not really dry, the garments are soaked in cleaning fluid. I do have a couple of questions for you. How can you dry the jacket if you don't have a drying rack? Can you just lay it flat on a table or counter top? Do you recommend washing both the pants and jacket at the same time, or is it okay to wash the pants separate from time to time? I am going to try this on an older suit that I really don't wear anymore and see how it comes out.
