@@canadiansensei the safari w/ belt or w/o belt has military heritage. Most belted coats have military heritage. At this price point, S and M shirts (as well as their jackets, trousers, etc.) are absolutely the BEST on the market today (at least in North America). Their OCBD's are amazing, with soft, unlined collars. Not even Brooks Brothers make them anymore (well, they do, but don't offer them in exact sizes and charge almost $100 for them). So, the only other ready-to-wear options currently are J. Press ($125) and O'Connell's (even more expensive), and bear in mind that O'Connell's and J. Press will fit like a pirate shirt (J. Press' "trim fit line" is very limited). S and M.'s spread collars look amazing with or without a tie. Good luck finding such shirts in this price range anywhere else on the market. Also worth noting is that all their shirts are made of 100% natural fibers with no "stretch"; the vast majority of their shirts are actually NOT "wrinkle-free", which is becoming almost impossible to find these days. I'd also like to mention their "Neapolitan" style jackets with wide lapels and a 3/2 buttoning, which are also unique on the market at this price point. Overall, the company offers great taste, balancing between conservative and modern. My only issue with them is the customer service. Making a return can be a problem.

Spier & Mackay is a brand that offers exceptional value for the money. Everything from their sports jackets to their shirts are amazing for the price. I got three shirts from Spier & Mackay in simple colors just to cover my basics, purple label. Shirts are very affordable, however surely above average in terms of quality, twill cotton, size 15/33 conteporary. All three fit me extremely well right out of the package, no adjusments whatsoever, no fit variations. Two types of collar, their so called "Italian spread" and a normal spread, so no button-downs and I didn't come across any "curl" issues with them, like Raphael did. In my opinion S&M shirts are good enough to act as your "working horse" daily office routine shirts. Probabaly yes, they are basic but with a sartorial touch, so definately worth trying, if you're OK with the sizing ofcourse

Thank you for this detailed review. I own several off the rack shirts from this company and you definitely get what you pay for. That being said the cost versus quality ratio was good for me when I was first starting out. I think for people who are new to classic menswear they can be a good way to find out what you like without spending a ton of money. If you know what you want then I can say with confidence their made to measure shirt program is a good value. I own three of their made to measure shirts and they fit great. Also their sport coats and trousers are good value. I do not have the money to buy bespoke or high end off the rack. This brand offers me the ability to wear tab trousers, and three roll two sport coats without breaking the bank. That's why I like them. Cheers

Being a Canadian and recently made to switch to mostly online shopping, Spier + Mackay is a great value, and a good gateway into classic menswear. They cut corners where it doesn't matter, such as packaging, and otherwise they just provide good material and designs at good prices. I have worked out my sizing based on their charts, and I am very happy with the fit in most cases, with minimal tailoring required in a few cases. I have a variety of shirts from them, their new jeans (dark wash is a tad too big so I had it tailored), long-sleeved polos, two sportcoats (which get fantastic responses), chukka boots, shoes, a tie, pocket square, hat. I also have a variety of their pants. I would say I have found some better moderately-priced clothing here and there from the U.S., ordering online, but paying duties and shipping is painful. Plus Spier+Mackay has frequent sales, and now my wardrobe is approximately 50% from them. There is something about classic menswear that entices me to take better care of my clothes, and in return I like wearing solid, reliable natural material that should last a long time and be timeless in style.

Boy, I always thought of polo shirts as the baseball caps of classic menswear and apparently my beef with them is the sloppy-looking curling collars! These look so much sharper.

Oh no! Another video channel brining attention to Spier and Mackay! You’ll raise the prices for all of us! Joking aside, a great review. Describing them as good but not great sounds about right. For the price, they’re a go-to for me for workhorse, everyday wear. Most of my measurements are on the slimmer side, so their cuts work for me. Wonderful specificity in this video at both what they excel at and what their limitations are. The cost isn’t a premium, so I’m willing to accept not all aspects of their work is premium. But I go elsewhere when I want a stand-out garment.

I recently purchased one of their Classic style Trench coats (navy). I am very happy with my purchase as it is hard to find a trench coat that features those wonderful classic details without a fairly high price tag. Even some of the higher end brands lack things like the nice lapels etc and look pretty plain. Has a detachable internal lining so good for cold and milder days. Full cotton so none of that hideous polyester. A shame you did not like their shirts. Will you be looking at their overcoats or suits as those are the items from them I would be most likely to buy next and your opinion could be informative. Love the channel by the way ;)

Great and much needed review! I can't say enough good things about this review. My experience with Spier has been okay. But, I have transitioned away from them to Luxire and now mostly to Sartoria Pastena's virtual MTM program. I feel Spier is good if you're a smaller man because their off the rack stuff is on the smaller end especially if you're accustomed to U.S. sizing and blue and purple label Ralph Lauren sizing. The other good thing about Spier is they provide a European aesthetic for very reasonable prices. Now, I'm a big guy. So, I could only buy from Spier's "Custom" program. One thing I noticed is that while I always wash my dress shirts in cold water and I don't put them in the dryer, my Spier shirts shrunk more than I am accustomed to seeing out of name brand, off the rack dress shirt companies. Also, I found the buttons on their "custom" shirts to be cheap feeling. Lastly, the biggest reason I stopped buying from Spier is also because of their customer service. Their MTM ("custom") shirts can take up to 5-6 months to be delivered in my experience. The last MTM shirt I ordered from Spier took around 5-6 months to be delivered and I never received an email explaining the delay. I only heard from Spier once I made a stink about it in the Spier Styleforum thread and then I was contacted about my order. After that long delay, in my opinion, it doesn't make much sense to order a more expensive item(s) like an odd jacket, blazer or suit from Spier.

I’ve not ever ordered anything from Spier & Mackay though have heard of them just from watching one particular style KZbinr channel and it was positive. They seem like a value option. It is good that you have ordered enough shirts from them that they fit, you’ve had a good experience and that you understand their rotation of style pieces from season. That’s a good thing in knowing and something often lost on others who have barely ever ordered 1-2 things from a brand. Finding a brand you like as well understand is a key in my opinion and in ordering cloths. I’ve been ordering clothing from before ordering online was even a thing ordering from catalogs mens clothing. I’m not a brand guy, but over many years I’ve found a brand and they style I’ve come to understand as well their customer service and have not had any issue. Thus I’ve developed some loyalty in why I purchase from them vs others. Their clothing and styles options changes from season to season adding new things, styles as well removing sold out styles. Few staple things remain like trousers but more options keep being available or changing adding new colors as options or fabric. What I’ve learned over the years and many my purchases is how this brand tend to size the sizes I purchase and I’ve kept notes of it, some mentally and some notes written down to remember. That has always helped me in my purchase decision where I’ve had to ever return few things. But if I had to it was an easy process also. I often give that feedback on a particular item if I can as well to help someone else. But point be, you learn a brand sizing to some degree and if something you purchase seems a bit off than is usual, well you can tell, provide that feedback and get it exchanged. Now, to a new person who just start buying 1 Pant/Trouser or 1 shirt for first time and not being as sure of the size they ordered they may have a different experience ordering and enjoying the purchase. They may have to go thru an exchange thinking they wear a large shirt normally, but what they needed was a medium or a large Slim Fit with measurements that may have fitted them better. You don’t learn that the first time but over time over many purchases or over years. And that something I think is a factor in ordering cloth, your experience and how you view purchases from any brand. Just not something most people learn on one purchase and that’s the depth of their experience.

Purchased three - off the rack - twill dress shirts from them. Their dress shirts run small so be careful if you are muscular or have a few extra pounds. If you find the right fit (meaning you go up in size) their shirts fit great. No extra fabric and well contoured for fit for muscular and average body types.. The biggest con for me was the fabric. The fabric seemed to hold more wrinkles than similarly priced dress shirts I have from mens wearhouse.

Thanks for a fair shirts review! I have two pairs of dress trousers and two sport jackets from S&M, one in wool/linen, one in Cerutti wool and all items fits and made really well. I had only one two issues with their products. First - after a couple of months the synthetic lining of the trousers began falling apart as it had no edge stitching (aka overlock). Second issue was with a sport coat. I ordered a very nicely looking model in Cerutti wool in shadow navy and when I got it I realized that the lower button of the jacket is stitched higher than it should have been! Very unpleasant look. Since I liked the fit and the fabric too much I brought the jacket to a local tailor and he helped me to fix it. The same with the trousers. It seems like S&M lacks some quality control a bit. But the design and fabrics are good for the price.

After several days, I emailed them again stating that I had not received an email from UPS with the shipping label. They proceeded to repeat that I would receive an email with the shipping label. I had to email them a third time before receiving the email with instructions on using a zip lock back to put the invoice into! Thank god there's a UPS store nearby. I love the Gentleman's Gazette, but I was a bit surprised- maybe a little annoyed- about Raph's complaint about customer service for this company. I don't know anything about Spier and Mackay and think the take given sounds spot on for the type of company, but it remiended me of an incedent with Fort Belvedere around a month ago. When trying to buy gloves at Fort Belvadere using the google chrome's browser, I ran into a problem where a perfunctory menu popped up at the end. I just had to accept terms or something like that. I was unable due to some sort of sizing issue with the pop up and had no button or way to scroll to the bottom of the pop up. I sent an email to the support team, but was told to use a different broswer. While it seems quite reasonable to trouble shoot, I got the distinct impression I was being blown off. As I was busy and already had an acceptable pair of gloves I moved on. A few weeks later, when I tried to buy it again I ran into the same problem. I didn't follow up again, even though very much like the idea of purchasing their high end gloves when I'm in Europe over the winter.

Fortunately I'm fairly handy with a needle and thread. To save the ordeal of return shipping I broke out the sewing kit and sure enough the coat went on sale 2 days after my purchase. Still waiting on an answer to my inquiry for any compensation.

Their contemporary suits are less boxy and requires less tailoring and more affordable than Brooks Brothers 1880 w/ equal quality. The OTR shirts can be tight in the arms for bigger guys but the MTO prices are decent for your basic poplin white or light blue dress shirt.

In that price point if you're willing to hunt you can get some outright top end shirts on ebay new without tags. Thanks for the video.

True, although mostly used shirts not new ones.

I know it has nothing to do with the video but i was wondering if you could suggest somewhere a 400 lb man with a 74 inch chest could get dress clothes even the big and tall sites dont have dress clothes in my size. I live in the Savannah aera.

These guys are based in and around Toronto but I went to their store not too long ago and it all felt a bit cheap to the touch. They have some cool garments I want to get like the safari jackets but the pants and suiting felt a bit off. However, the price point is fairly competitive which makes the quality sort of justified

I bought a cricket sweater from them. Quality is fine.

Cut of the contemporary cotton/linen sportshirt seems quite ungenerous across the chest, even on a lean, six-foot, 175 lb. man. Size differential across shirts is also apparent in sleeve length on this model vs. a contemporary royal twill dress shirt, with 35" sleeves coming up a bit short on the latter. These are both black labels, and I do like the materials.

Informative video. Seems a bit like S&M are somewhat of a Canadian Hawes & Curtis. I do believe clothing companies (especially in such a "niche" as classic menswear has become) are ultimately hurting their bottom line by focussing on only "slim" types. Yes, it's "the style" today, but there's much competition and a sizeable (hah!) portion of potential customers get left out. But that's just my opinion. I think your comment on their customer service was quite important. While there are few things which I detest more than "Let me talk to the manager" types of customers in a physical store setting, a solid customer service is the hallmark of a trustworthy online retailer, exactly because one can't go back to the store to work out their complaints vis-a-vis. Negative reviews for an online retailer's CS (and, even more so, personal experiences) will keep me away from ever buiyng there (again).

Excellent review Raphael, I thought I was the only one who had problems with the thicker weave shirts. I have a flannel shirt and a thicker Oxford shirt from them and they both fit tighter on me than their normal ones. Quite annoying I must say. However, if you stick to the good shirts, the price-value is incredible.

Jus't don't put in a dryer lol shrinks a full inch in the sleeves
@gentlemansgazette2 жыл бұрын
No quality shirt should ever go in the dryer. The dryer ruins the interlinings much more quickly. You can check out our clothes maintenance series for more details

Really though, you shouldn't be putting your nice clothes in the dryer. Even the highest end clothes with shrink and degrade from the use of a dryer.

I've never heard of "Spier & Mackay". But as they produce in China (and no, they're not doing it because they want to improve production), I guess I can forget about them again.

the fact that somebody asks for a discount after having placed the order is not gentleman like, even if it took 5 minutes after placing the order to have them slash the price. I would never do that.

I heard them make a similar complaint in the Carmina "is it worth it" video. It's amazing to me how people claim to support certain brands and small businesses while always striving on paying as little as possible for the product.

I’ve been pleased with my items from them. They don’t hit the level of, say, d’Avenza, Partenopea, or Finamore, but they aren’t going for that, either.

I have six S&M mtm shirts, and I like them, but for one issue: the collar button hole! I swear they make the collar button hole too small, and that's true on all six of my shirts. It is a nightmare to fasten the collar button as a result. Once fastened, the shirts fit and look great. The fabric in my shirts is of decent quality.

4:54, does it really take a genius to know what kind of brands they're referring to ? Brooks Brothers, J. Crew, Land's End, SuitSupply, etc. some of these companies make their shirts in the same factory in China. Spier & Mackay might be as well. But with little retail presence and a more DTC model, they can offer them cheaper. And you don't expect a smaller company to point the finger to these other renowned brands.. that would be a terrible marketing mistake.

I have two off-the-rack blue button-downs which are great except for the shankless buttons (mentioned in the video) and the oddly tight cuffs. Someone in the pattern department at Spier & Mackay has really odd ideas about the size of a human wrist (and mine aren't large). Even considering these flaws, they were a great value and I enjoy wearing them. Perhaps someday I will have a tailor resew the buttons with shanks. I also have one made-to-measure button-down which I love. I measured another shirt I liked the fit of and got exactly what I wanted. It's my favourite shirt and I plan to get more made-to-measure shirts from Spier & Mackay. I thought the array of options and fabrics was more than sufficient. The made-to-measure shirts are made in New Delhi. I also have two point collar white dress shirts with French cuffs. I bought only one, anticipating wearing it to a friend's wedding, but because of a shipping problem (not Spier & Mackay's fault) I ended up with two. I thought the customer service interaction was fine, and obviously the result was that I got two shirts for the price of one, so I can't complain. Although their marketing may be vague, it does seem to be the case that they don't really have any serious competitors at their price point. Their non-shirt items generally look stylish and seem to be competitively priced. I don't love the Neapolitan styling of their jackets, but if I did I'm sure I'd have bought one by now. They're a great value among half-canvassed jackets.
