00:00 Introduction
First, by the way, all of the shoes you can see here are from Ace Marks, a supplier of handcrafted Italian men's dress shoes and I liked them because they are hand-burnished and they provide a really good value under $300. I've had their shoes in my closet from the beginning and I liked them because they fit me extremely well.
5 Dress Shoes You Need To Start Your Collection
02:02 Black Oxford Shoes
It's an all-time classic, especially as a captoe. You can wear it for business, to the funeral, and any kind of formal event out there. Also, unlike brown, black comes just in one shade and so you don't have to invest in dozens of black shoes but one is really a staple that you must have.
You can wear it with two-piece suits, three-piece suits, particularly in navy, charcoal, and grey, and any kind of other business appropriate suit. It's also good with blazers, maybe a navy blazer with gray flannel slacks or you can wear it with your tuxedo for Black Tie events, your dinner jacket, alternatively, also for white tie or for formal morning dress.
03:50 Brown Derby Full Brogue Wingtip
A derby is less formal than an Oxford. The Derby has an open lacing system and because of that, it's more flexible so when your feet are tired and they swell and get bigger, it's a more comfortable shoe than an Oxford. Because of that, I like it for traveling. I would choose a medium brown color such as this antique brown cognac from Ace Marks; it's very versatile and because they are hand polished and hand burnished, you see different shades of brown at the tip of the shoe than for example at the bottom.
04:56 Loafer
It's a slip-on shoe, it's casual, it's an entirely different style from the other two, yet it's a timeless classic. It's really easy to dress up or down and they come in different variations; you can have tassel loafers and sometimes people think they're old-fashioned yet actually have them quite young-looking and modern but if you don't like that, go with a penny loafer because they're really classic and they're called that way because you used to be able to put a little penny in the front opening. For versatility, I'd go with a different shade in brown than you chose for your Derby wingtip.
06:07 Reddish Double Monk Strap
It's very versatile, it's stylish, and it's young, and it's just different than all the other shoes that you already have in your wardrobe at this point. This model from Ace Marks comes in a brandy antique Brown which means it was hand polished and hand burnished to achieve different color tones.
07:35 Medium Brown Half Brogue Oxford
Here, I have an Ace Mark shoe in a lighter antique tan which is once again different than all the other brown tones in my wardrobe. It has a captoe with nice broguing, a medallion, and it's less casual than the full wingtip Derby shoe. I'm adding it to the collection because it's kind of an in-between the more formal Oxford and the more casual Derby. It fits right in between because it doesn't have a wingtip but it has broguing, yet at the same time, it's an Oxford and not a Derby.
So if you invest in these five shoe styles, you truly have an extremely versatile dress shoe closet and you can hold off on investments and maybe invest in other parts of your wardrobe.

Please reconsider. Every man must have at least one or ideally two business suits (basic charcoal Grey & navy blue, more to less formal respectively) and same level dress shoes. You’d rather have and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

I have 2 I wear one once a year usually, sometimes more depending on the ammount of weddings. But a dark suit is always good to have in case of a funeral. I have a few sport coats and get more use out of those on holidays and if I’m taking someone out someplace nice.

”Are those the best shoes money can buy? Heck no!” I have never tried on a pair of Ace Marks but I know you are a man of your word and I trust you with your sponsors. I think you did a great job on implementing the sponsor in to the video aswell beacuse other stylebloggers usually have 2-3 minutes to talk about the sponsor and then crack on with the video. However in this video you managed to showcase and talk about the products while having a nice flow in the video which keeps the viewers, or atleast me, entertained. Good job!

Hi, First of all - a huge THANKS for all the content you've created over the last years. I'm so inspired by you and thanks to all your valuable advise I have refined my way of dressing a lot for the last couple of years. I also love that you've hired Preston who can show us young gentlemen that it's fully possible to dress well even in the beginning of one's career when one has a somewhat limited budget. The above is one of my favorite videos that you've posted and has been a huge help in my search for the perfect shoe collection. Now that I've purchased "the big five" (and a few more pairs) it would be very interesting to hear your opinion on the following five pairs to buy. Cheers! /Henrik

Thanks, Raphael. I've only recently entered the sartorial world. From your videos (which I've been watching on repeat for some episodes), I'm gaining lots of valuable tips. As a result of this video, I've so far purchased 3/5 of the recommended shoes. I still need a black Oxford to replace my black Derby, as well as a cap toe half-brogue which is not very easy to find within my budget. But I'll get them eventually. Thanks for helping me out 🙂

First part of my collection after ditching cheaper dress shoes was a pair of captoe black Oxfords from Barker, very nicely made, goodyear welted, and with a bit of work I put a mirror shine on the toes. I recently went to the Crockett & Jones factory in Northampton with no set agenda of what shoe I was looking for but came away with a lovely pair of brown half-brogue captoe Oxfords, I would have been just as happy with Derbys but these fitted so well I just had to get them. Next on my personal list to buy is some Loafers.

This guy is on point with his assessment shoe styles and categories. I have three out the five mentioned, a cap toe that wouldn't be considered a brogue but there Kenneth Cole's; conversely, he failed to mention the split toe another multifunctional style, I acclimated to after a number of years. Finally, I had an issue with his pants; and not sure if he was trying to draw attention to the shoes or, is it a proclivity: any haberdasher of stock and trade, should have a decent brake in his pants.

I would love to see you cover black shoes with a contrasting white. They are personally my favorite color scheme for a shoe. Most commonly seen in golf shoes. However, it really suits and even dresses up a black shoe, and breaks up the black that you seem more often than not not to like. White shoes, as well. Most people do not know how to incorporate them. However, they have an unparalleled level of dignity when implemented properly. A shoe history video would be rather intuitive and important for your dedicated fan base to learn of that may not otherwise pursue. My first experience was with the history of the Chelsea boot. However, most shoe and boot models have a very rich and beautiful history that anybody gains a greater appreciation for having educated themselves on.

Believe it or not, I have three or four pairs of Allen Edmonds shoes that I purchased in the 90's...cap toe oxford, two pairs of slip-ons (black, burgundy), and another oxford two-tone style. Always stowed with a shoe tree and in the cloth wraps that came with the shoes. The shoes are still in immaculate condition. I have a narrow foot, and I'm able to get A-E in a B width. They were expensive at the time $200+ or thereabouts, but the quality was well worth it.

depends on the age and what you do, as a university student, even a pair of derbies makes me the most "formal" one of my peers, therefore at the moment I'd say my 5 must have shoes are: a pair of black derbies and a pair of light brown ones (I go without broguing as personal preference) which can be used all year were I live, a pair of Chelsea dark brown boots for the cooler days of winter and autumn, a pair of light brown penny loafers for summer, and for the most informal occasions in summer a pair of boat shoes. That said the 5 above can then be expanded with maybe another pair of chealsea in black, a pair of black Oxfords, a pair of desert boots, maybe a pair of brogued dress boots

This is my list if you are starting from nothing. 1: Black cap toe oxfords 2: Brown cap toe oxfords 3: Dark brown suede cap toe oxfords 4: Black cap toe oxfords (One is not enough imo because you need the other one to rest inbetween uses) 5: Paten leather opera pumps or whole cut oxfords if you are boring. 2 & 3 is great for cashual clothing aswell as suits. Broguing is optional aswell. If you dress cashualy i would go for a derbie as the fourth shoe. I love oxfords if you can't tell :D

I enjoyed this video just one question at what point would suggest investing in a pair of suede shoes possibly in medium or dark brown thanks again for the great information.

I've worn Brooks Brothers tassled loafers for work, lace up cap toes from Bostonians back when they had decent quality for the money, graduated up to Aldens, and Allen Edmunds cap toed lace ups. On casual Fridays, I either wear more formal cowboy boots without much decorative stitching with Dockers and sport coat or Bass Weejuns beef roll penny loafers and yes I had a penny in them. Now that I'm retired, it's sandals and slip on. If it's snowing, then it's waterproofed hiking boots. Belt? I usually have braces so no belt necessary. If I do wear a belt, simple leather dress belt. Now it's a nylon webbing belt with a climbers style buckle. Goes with jeans, shorts, all year round. Or a thick nylon webbing with a 1/4 inch ratcheting buckle as a gun belt.

Was about time YOU also made a five-must-shoes videos! Have been waiting for this. As always, well done, Sir. A note of prudent forethought: Transcend (descend) into infomercialism with caution. We (I think) love your videos precisely for the absence of such. Edit extra: I understand sponsors approach you because of your credibility, but by taking on sponsors that is exactly what you lose. (Mentioning FB is transparent and different; we know it's yours.)

We only work with companies if we truly believe in them. We have turned down many brands such as Paul Evans, Harry's or Gillette because we simply dislike their products. We are very transparent about the relationship so everyone can draw their own conclusion or simply decide not to watch it. It is a free video with a lot of helpful content in my opinion, but we do not force anybody to watch it. If you do not like sponsored videos, you can check it before you watch and then decide not to. We think that is very fair.

Gentleman's Gazette Raphael, I know that you are serious and honest. I believe that those of us who gravitate towards you do it because of the high quality of your videos, your insight, and because of the feeling that there is no agenda. I understand you have to make a living and that it takes time to create content. In comment sections and on forums I have noted that many viewers have lost faith in the Big Three (you know well the channels). All I wanted to observe is that there is a fine line and it is my hope you don't cross it, because you are the most sophisticated and dedicated of them all -- old and new.

Gentleman's Gazette - I want you to succeed with this passion of yours. Yes, stay selective, people trust your advice. 6,000+ views in one day, kudos! Love your outfits! Young men have a huge interest in learning what you teach.

Couldn't have said it better sir. I unsubscribed from TMF because his content while some is good, it was getting annoying with him pushing these bullshit brands, especially shitty watches and what not. I really do enjoy this channel however. He has to make money which is fair but I"d like him to stay true to the classic menswear game. AlphaM actually has some decent stuff when it's not talking about his skin care company.

Thank you so much , interesting to listen to you as I was brought up in ladies fashion , which is so different that I had to learn to dress myself from the beginning . Thru the years I have had hundreds pair of shoes, all different quality and when I was younger I didn't care about the quality as much , just bought a new pair . Now I'm adding only nice shoes to my collection like Donald Pliner , which I have a hard time with sizing and Allen Edmonds which I love and lot's of Cole Haans, which I'm going away from . I have all the classic shoes you mentioned except monk , which I'm looking at now . So I have a question for you .What do you think about blue shoes ? I have once had a pair of navy , but now there is this more subtle blue tone , I wonder if I should dare ? Also thank you for introducing me to these AceMarks , I'm really going to look into them , how are they're sizing ? In the end, where are you from ? I hear a very subtle tone , which I started guess was German , but it's easier to ask .

Look up parques shoes on Kickstarter. They cost very little for unique and quality shoes in your choice of design. Highly recommend.
