Wearing the sweater blazer open as a layer like in 1:04 is probably the best application I’ve seen. When buttoned up, it looks like it doesn’t know what it wants to be

That sounds like an unstructured sports coat rather than a "sweater blazer". Who puts metal buttons on a sweater anyway lol.
@JeremySojaАй бұрын
@@Stealthfulness the one I picked up is a knitted sweater, w/o metal buttons, has open front pockets and notch lapels similar to 1:03, 6:09 and 8:09. I do agree the metal buttons are off-putting 😷

@@JeremySoja Definitely better with standard buttons. There are obviously many exceptions, but cardigans generally seem preppy to me compared to sports coats. The ones you pointed out aren't bad.

@gentlemansgazetteАй бұрын
Nice! Tell us more about your sweater blazer details?
@berniel5933Ай бұрын
@@gentlemansgazette Sure! I have one single breasted and an off-white version of the unstructured, knitted blazer. (I prefer the term "knitted blazer" over "sweater blazer"). They have some nice sartorial details such as functioning cuff buttons. I like them for home and for traveling, especially by plane and car: Because they are wrinkle free and easy to store in a carry on bag. Also, due to their knitted structure they provide some warmth and coziness. The downside is their price: I was not satisfied with their quality and fit of most manufacturers with exception of Lardini. The Lardini knitted blazers represent the top of line in the €500 to 1000 range. However, they got a lot of wear! Also, this may also fit in the sweater blazer category, but less formal: I like the beach blazers made out of terry towel material (like a towel) made by "209 Mare": Very good for pool and summer parties!
@Theo-ul8qmАй бұрын
I've experimented with sweater blazers in the past few years. What I have found is that, pretty much every time, I reach for a regular cardigan instead of the sweater blazer. The reason is because cardigans layer better. The lapels of a sweater blazer can look weird with a jacket on top, but the cardigan always looks good in this combination. And the difference in formality between the sweater blazer and the cardigan is so small, that wherever one is approapriate the other is approapriate as well. Having said all this, I like the look of them. So I have a few in my wardrobe, but I don't foresee this garment becoming a cornerstone of my style.
@kbmxxx2010Ай бұрын
I have a navy double breasted cashmere sweater blazer from Polo Ralph Lauren like the one shown in this video. It's a great piece that I wear whenever I want to wear something a bit more formal than a sweater but don't want the structure of a blazer. I wear it with a tie and dress pants and its great for the fall or winter. I don't own any cardigans and was on the fence about it but after acquiring a sweater blazer, I will stick to them and avoid cardigans. Clothing can fit into the 3 archetypes: the Refined, Rugged or Rakish archetypes. The sweater blazer combines the Rakish and Refined archetypes quite nicely.

FrankenFashion, to be sure, but more presentable than a hoodie or sweatshirt. I would prefer either a sweater or a blazer, but can see the advantages of this style for some people. Fashion innovations that are neither here there end up being nowhere in particular.

In all honesty I don't see a time and place where I'd wear this. If you just want something to keep warm around the house a fleece pullover will be more comfortable and it would be easier to find a weight appropriate for the temperature you keep your house at. If you want something to make a quick run to the coffee shop on your day off but don't want to resurrect your band T-shirt and sweats from your college days I think a shawl collared cardigan would be a better option. About the only situation where it might be appropriate would be if you're an older supervisor at a tech company and you want to have some degree of formality without going "full suit". In that case, though a dress shirt and cashmere pullover would be a more traditional choice, if you're starting to put on a few pounds as you grow older the lines of a sweater blazer might help to camouflage your waistline a little better than a tight pullover would;).

Greetings Kyle, a fascinating and excellent subject on men's classic style clothing.... however, I would argue that a "sweater blazer" for the time being is simply a trend, could it become a classic, I think it would be possible if it is viewed more as a sweater and less as a blazer, then it may have some longevity thanks for sharing!

I think it's somewhat deliberately?) disingenious to ask if it could be "replacing" the traditional blazer, as that's not what it seems to be intended for. Personally, I see it as a slight step up in formality from the classic cardigan, perfect for at home wear or the home office. I don't see them as "outer wear" to replace a traditional blazer, sports coat or suit jacket, though.

Love the sweater blazers for two reasons - work environments these days are much more casual and the sweater blazer fits in perfectly, it’s a step up compared to what my peers are wearing, most of them being millennials . 2. The standard blazer you stick in your closet for years go in and out of style depending on if you have metal buttons or not like right now, the gold buttons on my 1000.00 navy blazer are out of style right now so it sits in the closet until the gold button trend comes back.

Sweaterblazers are not classical men's wear for certain. More like something useless that the clothing industry came up with to sell more stuff. Sort of like tennis bracelets from the late eighties, another useless piece of jewelry.
@gentlemansgazetteАй бұрын
Out of interest, what's your definition of classic menswear?
@Joele54Ай бұрын
@@gentlemansgazette Classical menswear is something that is definitely more formal than wearing a sweater as a blazer. It blurs the lines between formal and casual to the point of being absurd. If you want to wear a blazer, do, but don't call a sweater a blazer. Of course we are all free to do as we feel, but that is not classical menswear either. Why not, instead of a top hat, create a bastardization that is has the vertical cylinder of the top hat, but no brim. Instead use the bill of a baseball cap. Call it a top cap, but still wear it as a top hat with formal attire.
