I will say as a bigger more muscular guy, performance suits are a godsend. Even though I get all my suits tailored, I still find myself reaching for the performance ones on most occasions outside of work events. Biggest reason I like them is for weddings. Much more comfortable when I am going to be in a suit for a long day to have a little stretch for when I try THAT move on the dance floor, and it prevents me from blowing out the pants or tearing the jacket. I'll also echo the the same thing with dress shirts. love the stretch and moisture wicking in performance dress shirts but mainly love that I can throw them in the washing machine and hang dry them. Shirts have paid for themselves vs not having to get the dry cleaned every week like my traditional shirts. I know the performance fabric isn't something for everyone, but its really been a game changer for me in that its changed my opinion on dressing up from being stuffy and uncomfortable to something I am very comfortable in and look forward to

I agree with the list with a few exceptions. The homage watch is a legitimate loophole for a couple of reasons. Some homages are for very old designs that are often unobtainable or very expensive. Second, even if an homage to a current model, say the Rolex Submariner, most people can’t afford a real Rolex sub. But if you just enjoy the look, really nothing wrong with buying a Steinhart or a San Martin. And, fwiw if anybody notices your watch, comment is usually more like nice watch then I’d that a Rolex Third, to some extent, a lot of watches borrow elements from famous designs. I have a Seiko Alpinist that borrows design language from Oris. And another Seiko that looks a little like a Tudor Black Bay. And yet somehow I managed to look at myself in the mirror. My suggestion is, don’t go too far into collecting homages and you will be fine. As for things not to wear, I guess crocs would make my list.
@BrockMcGoff11 ай бұрын
Good points! It's definitely a spectrum from homage to clone. I don't think homages are all bad, if purchased for the right reasons.
@Bwhomebrew10 ай бұрын
Definitely agree. I began buying more watches from AliExpress from brands like San Martin for certain reasons. If I like the looks of it and it happens to be a homage I still buy it for the fact that the specs on brands like San Martin are an incredible value. My $250 San Martin has better specs than any of my $500+ watches from brands such as seiko. Why would I buy a lesser quality watch for double or triple the price just because it’s a seiko? And like you alluded to, seiko themselves have many designs that could easily be labeled a homage watch. The vast majority of the population is not in to watches. I’ve never ever had someone ask “Is that a black bay 58?” Either no one says anything or someone says “that’s a nice looking watch” which I’d then respond “thanks”. No reason to try to pass it of as something it’s not. None of my friends, family, or acquaintances even know what the brand Tudor is so there’s definitely no pretending my watch is anything but the brand name that is on the dial, “San Martin” Also I don’t have a large enough budget to go over a $1000 for a single watch and I enjoy variety so I’ll stick with my $200 San Martin rather than forking out $6k for a Tudor. I understand people that don’t feel the same and would rather spend more money on just one piece that has heritage. Totally get why they would choose that route. But just because someone chooses a different route and buys a homage watch does not mean they are somehow pretending to be better than other people or that they are trying to play it off as the real thing. I say buy whatever you enjoy and can afford.

The last watch I bought was actually a Tommy Hilfiger. I got a very good deal on it (it was clearance priced, I had a 20% coupon that I used, and an additional 20% employee discount), but when I cracked the crystal (something I have done to most of the watches I owned), I discovered replacing the crystal was going to be more than twice what I paid for the watch. Since then, I simply use my cell phone as my watch, and since it (1) stays in my pocket most of the time, and (2) has a protective case and glass screen protector, I haven't had any problems. I *did* like the watch, and it was probably modeled on something else, but I liked the look (gunmetal silver steel band, and a blue face). I would never have tried to pass it off as anything other than a relatively inexpensive watch (despite the "designer" name), and none of my friends or peers are watch collectors or horologophiles.

I don't have a problem with homage though. I do have 2 steinharts. An ocean 39 black ceramic and olko special edition "Steve mcqueen" gmt. Both are well made for the price with ETA or sellita movements. It's a German owned company and Swiss made with accuracy within COSC. out of the two I'd keep the gmt. The chances of owning an original from the 1970s are remote. Plus you have to factor in dealing with a 50 year old watch. Either way I would recommend Steinhart. Regarding the sports jerseys--if you're not a fan, I agree, don't bother with a jersey you're only wearing out of peer pressure. If you ARE a fan, by all means, get the one(s) that speak to your obsessive fandom of the team. It is difficult if you happen to live in a place where there is not a big fanbase for your favorite team. I feel your pain. It's OK to be invisible in public. When you get to the arena or stadium, get the best-looking home jersey--with or without your favorite player's name--and wear it with pride for years at the games. Its OK to direct a little energy to your favorite sports team and wear the colors while doing it.
@rwillson2918 ай бұрын
After further thought, there are a couple fashion rules for special circumstances, such as being a guest in the owner's suite or your company's box seats. First, most professional and collegiate teams have branded polo or golf shirts--wearing that is your best, conservative, branded option. Second, if you are bringing a second colleague or date, clue them into the dress code (match the level of attire you're wearing--which is likely not a jersey*). Third, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you or your colleague/date wear anything branded of the rival team. Don't bite the hand that gave you the ticket! *Lastly, try to learn what others in your company box/suite will be wearing--if everyone is wearing jerseys--and many company cultures do--great! your choice! If you are attending a professional event with someone else's ticket, chances are it was expensive--more expensive than the branded clothing people in the suite will be wearing. Be respectful. Dress appropriately. Have a good time.

When I see the way men dress in the United States I feel you’re preaching to the choir. I travel extensively to Europe and find it amazing how much better they dress. I can always spot the Americans. They are the ones in cargo shorts, graphic t-shirts, sneakers and baseball hats. There is a so called KZbinr fashion expert who promotes performance suites and Collar & Co shirts that are 100% polyester and admits to wearing cargo shorts at Disneyland. I think the main reason is European men are more concerned with style than comfort. While American are more concerned with comfort than style. This may explain why we see so many people in American driving big pickup that they don’t need for work and get 4mpg.
