I got caught wearing brown shoes in London once..worst day of my life. I was scolded by an older, proper English gentleman who said I’ve brought shame upon my family and am a embarrassment to proper London menswear. I couldn’t bare the humiliation so I immediately booked a plane ticket back to Dallas. True story..

You should have just ignored such an ignorant Snob! ... "brown in Town" has been dead for many, many years now! ... Only a fool would say that to you.
@russ9921
@russ9921 Жыл бұрын
Any ‘proper English gentleman’ who did that is no ‘proper English gentleman’. A true gentleman would say nothing and would never be so bold or rude to scold another man for an article of attire. Even in the traditional London gentlemen’s clubs, as long as you are wearing a suit and tie, no one would comment on your shoes unless they were totally inappropriate ones such as trainers. These days it is not unusual to see brown shoes being worn even with a dark suit, as long as the shoes are of a traditional design.

@@kirbyallison NO cultured English Gentleman would even mention the "brown in Town" thing nowadays! It is a ridiculous anachronism from the past! .. check out the actual origins of why this was a "thing" and why it is not now ... and has not been for many years! ... but yes, some imbecilic idiots would still promote such nonsense!

In the beginning it seems like he is bashing a bit on England or rather "sucking up" to his host. However, England staying England allows France to stay France. Their style wouldn't stand out as much if everyone was doing it. England-France-Italy all have their place in men's wear and should all be cherished for what they bring to the wardrobe. Thank you for this rather rare video on French style. Imagine walking in Paris and having Lorenzo wave to you!

This was a really enjoyable video to watch. I really miss NYC, I walked that city in 12 years more than most did in their entire lifetime. As someone who enjoys watching videos and looking at photographs from the early 1900's, could not but notice the contrast between Kirby and Julien and the rest of the men walking the streets of Paris. Although I do not have the means to buy bespoke shoes or suits but trying to be more formal in my style.

Kirby!!!!! Here we go again. After watching the London version of Gent’s day out, I found myself flying to London to make several purchases based on your recommendations. Absolutely love them. Whether it is Floris (I prefer the older Vetiver bespoke), two coats from Huntsman, and several pairs of shoes from G&G (10 pairs to be exact - all RTW but now working on a pair from the Optimum line). Really love the quality of the products and I treasure them deeply! So, why the angst? Because now you’re giving me ideas about traveling to Paris. You’re quite the expensive habit Kirby. Love and appreciation from Nairobi, Kenya.

Lovely video as always. Just a note: there are two Anglican churches in Paris - the Episcopalian Cathedral and St George’s, which is part of the Church of England’s Diocese in Europe. There is also the beautiful and iconic Russian Cathedral of St Alexander Nevsky on Rue Daru, which has incredible connections to Russian émigré history and was at some point the cradle of Orthodox ressourcement.

Half a century in London working in the City and Mayfair and I simply dont recognise that strict dress code these days. If there is one, its self imposed in the smallest of circles in an area the size of a football pitch. The only thing I would agree with is outside black, brown or burgundy formal shoes shouldnt really be a loud bold colour

Collar gap is so obvious and the length of the sleeves are so long there is no visible shirt cuff. It’s as if the suit is a size to large for him. Halfway though the video and most powerful emotion is... sadness. Kirby, when you started the video with difference of Parisian style, it sounded really amazing, but...When you look at other people on the screen, what do you see? Style? Shorts & flip-flops, is that it? We have definitely taken a wrong turn throughout the evolution of men's style. You two look like aliens there.

Like in most major cities, most of the people walking about in a regular day are tourists. There’s simply nowhere you will see all well dressed people, outside specific settings. What does make sartorial capitals like Paris what they are is however that there exists the outlets for these cothes and there exists the settings in which everyone is in Impeccable style. There’s also the reality that for many, it’s not practically viable to wear haute couture every day. In my major work I get dirty and would destroy a $3,000 suite in an afternoon, so it’s not an option. This all said, I do believe people could, with some effort, look much better even while being casual. I would, for example, never wear shorts somewhere outside of the beach, a pool or my garden, nor sandals or flip flops, and a nice shirt is always a better choice than a t-shirt, even when doing manual labor.

@@bewing77 Being a tourist means looking like crap? Casual may look sophisticated too. But it's not just about tourists. In offices people don't look all that great either. The problem is, people don't care anymore.
