I appreciate the attention given to white tie here. In America, it's basically unheard of outside of magic shows, but I still choose to wear my set to the opera and ballet, along with formal ballroom dance events and certain balls or galas. As a big patron of the fine performing arts and a passionate dancer, I usually get to wear my tailcoat once a month - at least during the arts season. With morning dress, I get to wear one of my two sets on occasion. They're usually broken out for Easter Sunday, but I also wear them more frequently to formal afternoon tea services. In all reality, I am almost always the only person dressed in a tailcoat at these events; even a suit is too much to ask for most Coloradans. I still wear mine with pride. Some menswear enthusiasts complain about not having anywhere to wear formalwear, but the only thing stopping us is our insecurity of standing out.

In the southern U.S., the red/white boutonniere tradition primarily applies to Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May. Generally men wear roses, but women sometimes wear other flowers in a corsage.

@@cinabreparis-noeudpapillon9230 You're very welcome. I could have added that the main occasion for boutonnieres in the US are weddings. The bride selects two or three colors for the theme of her wedding which will coordinate all of the decorations and often times the bridesmaids dresses, grooms men's accessories, and the main flowers/ribbons in her bouquet. The groomsmen are gifted boutonnieres, really miniature corsages, that will usually include these colors, if not a few of the same blossoms from her bouquet. Other members of the wedding party, like the fathers of the bride and groom would receive boutonnieres, as well.

Lovely discussion as usual gentlemen. FYI, the acceptable colors for a 'boutonniere' are 1-Red carnation, 2-blue cornflower or 3-white gardenia for black tie. Other colors are risky and do so at your own peril, remember a splash of color defeats the whole concept of a dinner suit(tuxedo) as a strictly white/black perspective. A cummerbund may be deleted when wearing a DB tuxedo as it is never really unbuttoned unless seated. Midnight blue(almost black) can also be substituted for black tie, worked well for me in London one evening before leaving for Jamaica to meet Dr.No, really?! Of course, Michel LOL.

Hi Hugo, I can maybe add some comments based on my limited knowledge: The frock coat was Victorian and was replaced by the morning coat by the Edwardian period (Downton Abbey period). Traditionalist say the shirt for a dinner suit should just be a normal shirt with mop buttons and a turn down collar. I agree on the turn down collar but as a nod to white tie some will wear a full dress shirt (with detachable collar) and a full dress waistcoat which is how people in the early 20th century would’ve worn it who still would’ve had a tailcoat as well. The smoking jacket in velvet is supposed to be made in gem stone colours which is why you mostly see them in blue, red and green. Also morning dress trousers are called cashmere stripes and I believe no one know why. Great video as always. I look forward to visiting the shop when I’m next in Paris. Very keen on the lapel flowers. Also I’m Irish so I’m very happy to chat about the 6 nations!

Very insightful. I wonder then, what was the type of coat called that was used in the early 1800s in France that closed on the top half of the torso but was opened at the waist. Unlike a tail coat it wrapped around the sides of the legs as well leaving only the front of the legs open. 🤔

At least in Finland, white tie is worn in academic events and that has kept it alive. I suspect a lot of the traditions are imported from Sweden since we share common history but at least here white tie can be worn even during daytime but then it's worn with a black waistcoat, which is also acceptable to wear in male only evening events. An example of such a daytime white tie event would be a doctorate thesis dissertation. They have swords and special hats as well. Men only events are nonexistant nowadays. Who knows? Maybe secretive freemasons wear black waistcoats. Morning dress is pretty rare as it's really only sparsely used by the groom of a wedding. I don't think they're making a big comeback here as white tie is day wedding appropriate according to the etiquette and was also widely used in the past if a person happened to own one so they have no real historical relevance to the best of my knowledge. In finer circles, perhaps sometimes worn by the groom but it's not something most regular men would've owned, that's for sure. I recall seeing a picture of the president wearing one but that's from the white and black photo period. I see them sometimes when shopping vintage and I got myself one. It has a five-digit landline number (probably early 90's) of a forgotten bespoke atelier. An easy dress code to shop vintage as all the key pieces are of a different fabrique. I got the cashmere stripe trousers and a dove grey vest as well. All for under 30€. I'm only missing the neckwear and a top hat if I want to go all out. As for frock coats, I've seen merely two or three vintage pieces. I am not knowledgeable when they fell out of use but I suspect they were always a garment only important, rich men wore. If it was made in the last 100 years, then it's probably for a theatrical production or a movie. I've never attended a black tie event but I've been in a few white tie events. Black tie is not a regular thing. I still bought myself a dinner suit to wear to restaurants, the theatre or any occasion I just want to dress up for my own personal joy. Both the jacket and the trousers have a black and burgundy pattern that is very retro. Perhaps a bit preposterous and definitely a statement but as I established, it's for "recreatinal use" and not something I would attend a real black tie event in. I would consider wearing it to the opera as there is no dress code but black tie is something I think you could spot a few guests wearing especially if it's the premiere show. Considering there are people in jeans, for crying out loud, it's not an issue to break some rules.

I enjoyed this video and hope your right that black tie and dressing in general is coming back but I’m not sure. USA has become a satirical disaster. I love dressing and wear black tie when I go to the opera but I’m the exception. I can count the number of men in black tie at the opera on one hand. There were some men in suites but most of the men I wouldn’t consider business casual. Keep up preaching the sartorial gospel but think you may be preaching to the choir.

Quote: The green carnation became a queer symbol in 1892 when Oscar Wilde instructed a handful of his friends to wear them on their lapels to the opening night of his comedy Lady Windermere's Fan. From then on, wearing a green carnation on your lapel was a secret, subtle hint that you were a man who loved other men. Jan 29, 2020 -from Google. I hope this helps.
