Split rings are extremely dangerous bro you have to find a specialty tire changing company that is certified with a safety cage they break them down in bro for real for real it's what the old timers call widow makers

Good to see the old Cat fire up so easy! Don't listen to those guys saying those wheels are dangerous, they'll be fine! And they look Great! I think the nay-sayers might be confusing those 2 piece wheels with the old "widow maker" wheels which were joined in the middle. The only thing with these 2 piece wheels is make sure you use a cage when putting them on the rim, but if you make sure the rims are clean and damage free there won't be a problem. You are supposed to use a cage for the new tubeless tires as well according to the manufacturers. I ran, and changed, these old 2 piece and 3 piece rims for years and had no issues! There were some problems with tube type tires however. The bias ply tires would always pound like a flat spotted tire until they got warmed up and if you got a flat the valve stem would fall into the tire and destroy the tire from the inside! To avoid that I always carried some small vise grips and if I had a tire getting soft, I would clamp the vise grip onto the valve stem with the plier laying flat to the wheel and go to wherever I could get it fixed. Even if it was totally flat the vise grip kept the tire from being ruined! If you were going to be running this commercially I would say Definitely change them. But for a period piece show truck I would polish up those old aluminum tube types cause they are SWEET!

Congratulations on getting Johnny Cash The Cabover started and have it run for a bit! I think most of us fans are very understanding about what it takes to run a truck company and work on other projects that don’t earn money for the company. You have shown consistency in showing us you will get things done in time. As always, thank you for sharing your video content on KZbin!

I know everyone poo poos on the old tube type lock ring rims but I've been dealing with them for years with no issues or fears. Where guys go wrong is when they're in a hurry to get a tire on and don't take the time to properly inspect and clean the ring and rim. I like to sandblast the mating surfaces if there's any rust buildup so when they go back together they actually lock like they're supposed to, any rust or dirt buildup creates a situation where the ring doesn't seat properly it will kick away from the rim instead of pulling together. When they're right they go together easy. When restoring an old truck it's nice to have the old style rims for the look, the biggest issue now is finding the tube type tires but they're still out there being made.

My late Father had a 1973 Freightliner with a 335hp cummins in it. He had it all painted up and had cool painted on pin stripes on it after hitting a deer. Used it to pull a 40ft logging trailer loaded with logs or pulp wood. I'm sure theres pics around of it when it got out of the body shop. Ended up shutting down the logging buisness in 1991 and selling off all of the equipment including the truck. Of course I was only 16yrs old at the time but would of loved to keep the truck. Great videos Tim and family, Keep up the awesome work !!!

It's amazing to me when you can piece together an entire engine from someone's backyard and she comes to life as if she was shut off only yesterday. It just goes to show what kind of quality was built back in the days when trucking and being in the car was more hardcore because people didn't sit behind computers and knew how to use their hands to create machinery which proves time and time again of where we've forgotten the best things we ever made were here in America.

I remember those wheel rims with the locking rings. They must be seated good when refitting and the tire inflated in a heavy gauge metal cage in case it comes apart. If the ring flys off it can near cut you in half or whoever else is in its flight path. If the tires on it are sound and holding air they would be cool to have on if it were going to a show on a trailer. But for the road i would have a nice fat set of alloys.

Allyn from A Thompson Trucking my first truck was 74 Pete with a 1693. That switch is called a series parallel switch I did away with it and put 12 volt batterys and starter cause it had 6 volt batterys that were wired in series. It was 40 years ago so I don't remember every thing I did and I put a 40mt starter and it worked fine. I think I mite even have a few 1693 parts somewhere cause that engine blew and changed it over to a 3406 that was a job I don't think I ever want to do again so good luck I hope you get it running. If that's a 425 they have a lot of power I loved mine I like to have another one but they are over 50 grand to major good I'd love to see it done
