I wish when you where in the pool rooms, you added a slight reverb to your audio. It would be really cool if developers made it so you could speak through a mic in game, and hear the reverb off the actual environment. When you first turned on the feedback button, I thought that was what was going on and got really excited by the idea.

Then, if you waited longer, that abyss seems to change, and you can almost see eyes in it. And you earn the additional one "...and the abyss stares back"

5:25 I have a few thoughts on this. I think you can have both. I think the best way to have a monster in the backrooms is not to have a constant chase mechanic, but for the player to *know* it’s there but rarely if ever interact with it. That way, not only are you lost in an endless void of subliminal structure, but you know there’s something else that lives there, so it knows how to find you. I love subtle-stalking monsters, it’s so much more dreadful that way. I think an important thing to remember is that the backrooms *are* the monster. It’s an entity that can and will keep you there for as long as it wants to. Edit: 1:36:42 ok so at this point I completely described this game accidentally

This needs to crossover with Eldritch vibes. The Old Ones or the lesser fiends, like the fungal and supernatural creature Lovecraft was calling a "vampire"... I for the life of me can't remember which short that was. But yeah, it's a place between places, so things from other worlds sometimes "oops" in. Like you did. Something simple as that.
@PrivateSy4z18 күн бұрын
Yes less is often more with horror. It would be really scary if you dont interact with it constantly, but every so often you see it watching you or moving in the distance for a second or two. Just enough to make you feel on edge all the time.
@jacollins201018 күн бұрын
Yes, I think the problem with both extremes is that you'll get numb to it fairly quickly. It's hard to keep the tension up when it's all creepy rooms or all monsters chasing you all the time. I think creepy rooms + knowing a monster's around but you don't know how close helps change things up.
@user-cs7fg5eq9r17 күн бұрын

@EmergencyL0tion14 күн бұрын
Ok a couple people have said it’s counting the steps not the time spent in the backrooms and I still believe it’s counting the time and not the steps and here’s why. At 37:45 the last 3 numbers on the clock is at 277 and when he ran to the desk which was about 20 meters away the clock went up to 290 but when he got to the desk he only took a couple steps looking around the desk for 20 seconds before he finally left and you can see the counter went up to 310. Also just to clarify when i say the clock is counting the time spent in game I obviously know he did not spent 9 years I think the game has a preset time when you load up the game and it adds the seconds you spent playing the game either when you first loaded the game or when a certain room was rendered

I felt like this for a second, but then realized It added to the liminal space effect of it for me. Like an irl the "wait, have I been here/played/watched this before"? It being much like the idea of liminal spaces that are reminiscent of irl places but being different/off and often looking like a place we've been to, but really haven't. I think it's more likely some of the devs are using similar assets and/or like a similar aesthetic, but again it kind of adds a girl "wait..."/extra layer for me and I began to enjoy it a bit
@heddess334718 күн бұрын
well, it is a backrooms game. and usually every "dimension" has its set appearance. i think the devs intended this authenticity (to the vanilla poolrooms). this sense of "repetitiveness" is a quirk that the backrooms community has respected a lot. the point of the backrooms is that it all looks the same. the game is quite subtle, and so the simplicity makes sense in this context. which makes it even more enticing in my opinion.
@finpin262217 күн бұрын
I think looking alike comes with the territory, because these are based off of the same genre of images, but the statues in this especially made it look really similar to Pools (though I kind of enjoyed the layout in Pools a bit more). Ironically, I think this game found its footing better with the non-poolerooms areas. I do agree though-- I'd love to see some different styles within the liminal space type games. I'd love to see a point-and-click styled one similar to Myst, because that was the first "liminal" feeling game I ever played... I think there's a lot of room for experimentation.

I like the progressive story telling, along with the parallels for flesh and stone. It makes more sense the deeper you go, things like the snake maybe being a parasitic worm, the round dudes being an infection, the mannequins being consumed people from the past, and everything leading you to the heart where you understand that the rooms are alive. Im my opinion, the monster was always the rooms themselves. And i appreciate the attempt to make a game that focuses on that alot.

Not done watching the video yet, but the base walking speed is below that of a normal human, that stuff annoys me in games. I get it's part of the experience, but it's not about the speed of movement itself, it's that the sound of the steps taken and the bobbing of the camera is just so slow. Give it a more normal pace, without actually increasing the speed and that'd be a fine solution for me personally.

I could have sworn I heard a flatline noise (or dialtone, but the ending makes it clear) throughout a lot of the game, tucked away in the ambiance. It ties back to the scene in the house with the phone too, and looming faces making mournful noises and expressions. So much thought put into it.

It's crazy how big they've gotten. I think people have done a disservice to the creepiness of the Backrooms by adding monsters to it. In my opinion the horror works best when you are alone. The environment itself is extremely unsettling. Being alone makes it more mysterious and confusing. Why are you here? What are the rules of this reality? How do you leave? There is no way to find out, there's no way to understand. Because you're alone.

So the direction of the spiral stairs indicates that you're going deeper in when you're going up. Spiral stairs are designed to give a potential "defender" of e.g. a castle more space to swing a sword while the attacker coming upstairs doesn't have that space ( it's designed for swords in your right hand, middle ages and all :) ). It's a small thing, but a bit unsettling if you think about it.

I really like these liminal space games because they are just so enigmatic and I can enjoy the feeling of creating my own story from them. I feel like there's a path this game is following, the no smoking sign, the timer that has been counting for extremely long, the strange thumb shaped creatures, especially the ones that block you in. From the story I see here: you're an addicted smoker (the no smoking sign and the extremely long timer) You were pressured by your peers into smoking (the strange thumb creatures giggling and trapping you in) The screaming heads stuck in a petrified state could be you shouting or your parents shouting, perhaps a breakup occured. The dilated eyeballs on one of the thumb creatures could stand for the state of being high, the odd delirious flowers that can also mean the same. The strange plants that suddenly appear (could be a symbol for cannabis). The strange obsession with eyeballs and being stared at which could be the fear of being watched. The giant entity being hidden by a cloth could mean the attempt to hide yourself or separate yourself from the outside world. The strange repeated images of playground assets (could represent nostalgia or the want to be unborn). The eventual disappearance of the thumb shaped creatures(your peers) which lead the the feeling of being alone and no support which delves into the next topic. The defiance of gravity (specifically walking up a wall which could be synonymous with the idiom "to drive up a wall" meaning to drive one crazy) which could mean your character is slowly driving itself crazy. I think this leads to the eventually insanity of the player (the nonsensical stairs and slides), and death (the ending with the dying heart). I remember I heard somewhere that the point of the horror genre isn't just to scare the living crap out of you, but it's also to bring up more question than answers (in a good way). It's a reason many sequels to horror movies are often looked down upon (this is subjective. This view can change from person to person). I think that's what these games are really great at doing. There doesn't have to be a story or a correct path the game has to follow, which allows you to imagine the game in your own way which comes with a sense of fascination and exploration.

I was looking through all the lets plays of this game on youtube and you are pretty much the only one smart enough to not put your face up on the screen for this game. Totally ruins the immersion. So thanks!

Thanks for the video, sir: Solitude can be just as damaging to the psyche as fear of a creature. It can cause hallucinations and all sorts of things. This game captures that pretty well.

Also, the original backrooms I believe was a 4chan post or something, and was always meant to have monsters. The post I believe mentioned that "if you can hear something, it hears YOU" So saying that the original idea was more liminal and less monsters is kind of wrong. Then again, the community is split on which is the original idea and point, but I'm more on the monster team. My ADHD would never allow me to play a game like this without some threat xD Love the video, IGP ^^

It starts like "have you ever dreamt of this place?" So it's always has given more importance to the nostalgia peacefull yet unsettling feeling. However, skinwalkers, smilies, partygoers, partypoopers, windows, the ones that hide in the walls... there are as important to the backrooms as the abience. However, the actual chance of encountering them in the og levels is really low. A good game with entities would be one with an ai generator that keeps making different rooms that get saved on the go with a randomizer that has 0.x% this entity appears, etc and then make it so that the level you are on changes the percentages. Like, you're on level 0, there's 0% chance you encounter anyone. However, on level one, there's a 0.03% chance you meet Jerry (the bird that has lots of followers, can only be found on level 1), and if you don't have in your inventory the thingy you were supposed to give him, you die. There should be also like an option you encounter other players, npc explorer teams you can join or friendly entities like the one in granma's house. There's so much going on in the wiki that could be used but thos is no way an indie project. It'd need crazy computers and lots of money to be made with a huge team behind it but oh it would be so worth it

Genuinely on the edge of my metaphorical seat, I am not phased by horror most the time, but something about liminal spaces man... This is easily the best game of this genre i've seen so far, just due to it not relying on chases and sudden noises to surprise the player, thanks for the vid.

1:10:47 That’s a visual glitch, probably caused by having a light source that goes through certain surfaces, and an oversight on map section placement.

I'm 41 and ever since I was about 6, I've had dreams about liminal spaces. Not very often, but they've always either made me feel at peace or extremely anxious, lol. Because of those dreams, I was immediately obsessed with this genre! I don't play the games because I have WAY too much anxiety for that, but I watch a LOT of these videos, lol. Liminal spaces have always intrigued me, although I had no clue they were called that until people started making content about them, lol. Great game, but the ending was a little anticlimactic for me, lol.

What were some of those settings in your dreams, what did the liminal spaces look like
@meanjeanmcqueen617115 күн бұрын
@danicruz9354 mainly I dreamt about big rooms with columns throughout them or I would dream about this mall I went to when I was 6, but there wouldn't be any stores or people in it. That mall is what started the dreams and my fascination with liminal spaces, lol. I went there in like '88 or '89, so you can imagine the immaculate 80's vibes it gave off, lol.

Of course, at least we’re starting here. Oh, hello, this little water effect. Welcome to Liminalcore. This game has been looking really good from what I’ve seen. I’ve been meaning to play it since the demo came out. Looks like here we’re in the pool rooms. Also, just because I want to say it right away, there’s a setting in here, and I don’t know what it’s for, but check this out. Look, hello. Hello. Isn’t that weird? Isn’t that weird? What? Why is this here? Why is this here? Now, that had me thinking that it was possible that the game detects your microphone, which, of course, like any game even remotely in the horror genre that utilizes that mechanic, I’m all for it. The problem is, I can’t turn down the actual feedback for me in-game without affecting other things, so I’m going to keep it off. If there’s any point in the game where it says that I need to have the microphone enabled or it adds immersion, I’ll put it on and try my best. But for now, I’m leaving it off. So we’re in the pool rooms. I don’t know if there’s any particular story to this, but I will say this is looking goddamn beautiful, if I do say so myself. Will I die if I go in here? I feel like I’m going to drown if I go in here. I’m going to go in. Wait. Oh, it was the reflections. I thought this was way deeper than I got. Bamboozled. Interesting. You know, this is really giving, I know we’re in the pool rooms, but this is really giving a vibe of pools, strangely enough. Like everything, like the visuals, the audio feels very pool-like. Could run, that’s good. Always good to be able to run. There are VHS effects, by the way, if you want to play with that kind of immersion, but I don’t know. I’d rather be in the shoes of the guy, not watching him experience the back rooms. You know, the found footage thing is cool, but sometimes I’d rather not.
