Meet Mischief, who's about to completely reshape your views on ravens. Hatched to parents at the World Bird Sanctuary, he will turn 20 this year. Paige Davis, who worked as the Curator of Bird Training at the sanctuary, did extraordinary work educating the public about these amazing ravens that can mimic human speech.
While she gets to interact with all kinds of birds, Mischief holds a special place in her heart. Watch how he moves forward when he doesn't want her to stop petting him.
And here watch his reaction to seeing her after a while. He'd even bring her gifts. Paige's interactions with Mischief demonstrated how intelligent ravens are.
He washes everything he eats to soften his food and to get extra hydration. He even knows a thing or two about recycling. When Paige would take him outside and he was ready to go indoors, he'd communicate that to her by just flying to the crate. And then of course, there's Mischief's mimicry of human speech.
Hard to believe but he can imitate a cough too. So next time your see a raven, remember what they are capable of, just like Mischief.

Ravens, crows, and magpies actually have intelligence that rivals and in some cases beats monkeys. They can solve puzzles, manipulate the masses, learn by example, create tools, teach other birds their discoveries, and much more. They even have a working understanding of fluid physics far superior to the average toddler, as some water puzzles have shown. Some of the coolest animals imo.

When I was in elementary school, we had a teacher who found a small raven, they asked if anyone wanted to help taking care of the raven and I volunteered. Today, almost six years later, everyday when I walk home from school, he walk or flies near me. I know it's him because he's the only raven that gets close to me. It's funny to see people's reaction once they realize the raven is following me.

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter, In there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore; Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he; But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door- Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door- Perched, and sat, and nothing more. Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling, By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore, “Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,” I said, “art sure no craven, Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering from the Nightly shore- Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!” Quoth the Raven “Hello."

I try to save one (wing broken) and bring the crow to a wildlife help center, the wing was a loss, so they had to put him down. And the vetenary tell me that she made a exception, but, she can be in big trouble to help a crow, and me too. I find that really sad.

Mischief is an African White Collared Raven. I've been in the avian field now for the better part of 30yrs. And have "hands on" experience with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey and Budgies to Macaws. And the "Corvid" family is probably my favorite of ALL the birds i have studied and worked with. They comprise of the following; Ravens, Crows, Rooks, Jackdaws, Magpies, Jays, & Nutcrackers. ALL of which are extremely intelligent in there own right, share tight family bonds that last many years, and are capable of speech particularly Ravens and Crows as shown here. I'm just glad Paige was able to form the bond she did with Mischief these birds often act more like dogs then they do birds. They never cease to amaze me with there intelligence. I once saw a Common Raven trying to steal an ice fisherman's catch after it had observed how to hold the line in it's beak. And then slowly tease the line between it's feet and YES folks it did end up catching the fish...!!! It was absolutely remarkable to watch. So these birds do hold a special place in my heart and i feel have been "mislabeled" over the years as harbingers of doom etc...They are most certainly anything but that. And deserve respect and preservation.

I remember the exact moment I realised how smart corvids are. Sitting in a maths lesson I was staring out the window and I observed a crow hopping around a bin for scraps. It flew up onto the bin edge and using its beak pulled the bin up and tucked it under its feet. It kept on doing this and it dawned on me what it was doing. It was hauling up the bottom of the bin bag so it could reach the good rubbish at the bottom. I was 13, I'd never witnessed any bird do problem solving, I went home and researched about crows and discovered the corvid family, it started a life long love for corvids.

@@cattailer1077 Very wise. She was born blind in the bush and from when she could walk, ravens would follow her. After a while they’d land on her outstretched arms. Apparently ravens communicate to neighbouring groups in the bush, who is a friend and who is not. So the further she wandered, the more she was recognised. And they knew enough to know to lead the way, purposely squawking, back to her home. The ancestors of these ravens I see today certainly had great love for my grandmother. 🙏🏾♥️🙏🏾

@@poorthing Not nasty. The source was the host of the channel and the comment would have been directly under my initial one. So, simple fact, Eggchin stuffed up monumentally twice, didn't look properly and made a redundant comment (With poor grammar also.). If I'd called him/her an idiot, that would have been nasty and many others would have done that. Nice of you to jump to someone's aid but don't waste your time defending the indefensible (That makes you a beige instead of white knight.). i was at the hospital, tending one of our prisoners who was sick. it was a long shift so after a few hours i took some time to go to this small garden just outside the ward, with some oreo. it was still wrapped and a raven took it away as soon as i put it next to me on the bench! 😂 but he didn't take it too far from me, it was only a few steps away and he was trying so hard to unwrap it. i tried to approach him but he flee. so i took an oreo and place it on the bench in front of me. he came back and ate it. it happened a week ago, but everytime I'm on the hospital shift, i make sure to place some oreo on the same bench. it wasn't anything too special but for some reason, it makes my heart feels warm 😊

Ravens are super smart, at my mom's house they even do shows. One dances on the telephone lines and then stops and looks around if people are paying attention. And if noone pays attention he gets bored, finds some nutshells to jam a rain gutter or two for his own amusement. :D

We had a crow at our wildlife rehab center who would be a lifetime resident bc he had no tail from poor nutrition as a baby. He hopped all over the place. A little bit of quality time spent with him and he bonded to whoever gave it to him. If the person was neutral towards him, he showed his indifference right back. It doesn't take long to befriend a bird but it its a strong bond when it happens and makes you feel very special and fortunate.
