They made a lot of effort in general. Trying to milk an irate, slightly disorientated donkey must have been a lot of fun. Fortunately the reward is in proportion: having a baby donkey in the house is not something you see too often. And the little fellow seems to truly love both of them.

Because the mother rejected the foal and didn’t nurse him, she never bonded with the baby. Cash, on the other hand, did form a mother-child bond but it was with the human caretakers. After that bond was formed any other donkey including the birth mother is just another animal to him.

I learned the other day that in the island of Santorini tourists are taken up the hill on donkeys. Only now they out a 100kg (!!) weight limit, but still they work nonstop in the heat. It breaks my heart, I wish there was something we could do.

It suprised me too when I first found out, but it can actually happen in a wide range of species. It's easy to forget that animals are individuals, just like people, so some are more "motherly" and others less so just by nature.Then, external influences like the mother being stressed (eg, because she's unwell or not being cared for properly) can also play a role. In some species, the quality of care they got from their own mother can actually make a huge difference. Great apes learn to parent by watching older females in their group raise babies, so if they aren't raised with an opportunity to see that, they generally don't mother well themselves. Sorry, lecture over, just thought you might find it interesting.
