In the ten years Geoff spent in the Beetlejuice Revue at Universal, he wasn't just singing and dancing (in green make-up and four-inch platform shoes, no less). We get a little bit of his acting in videos with costumes and set pieces, and see a little more in songs like Little Mermaid or Monster Mash. (Each "monster" was adorably different, not to mention the Narrator.) He brought in his buddies Tony and Layne to help with this one since the camera work was so different from his previous solo videos. He's always been good at telling the story of the song, but this one was a whole 'nother level. Even the visual details of being untucked, untied ... he's undone, bereft without her.

I always liked the original (and still do) but Geoff's arrangement of this is on another level! The angst ridden acting is perfect, and the desperate, plaintive emotionality in both his bass and that beautiful tenor range, made me want to cry (and give him a big hug)! Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery! 🙂👍

This is how Geoff feels every time his wife leaves the house. That is called love. I think Geoff can hit an 8 1 perfect octave. I think he takes the note that he is on and says it's an 8 and then goes straight to a 1 making it sound so low.

so what´s happening is that he sings it in his chest voice and on the lowest note he switches into subharmonics, which means that he sings the octave above the note he is hitting but manipulating his vocal chords to vibrate at a frequency an octave lower

Thank you for making the sacrifice of reacting to Geoff when you are sick, best wishes for a full recovery as soon as possible. From the first time I heard this, I loved the fact that it was kind of 'organically' low (as in the low notes were still a very connected part of the rest of the song) arrangement for him. With this song showing a guy going through 'ups and downs' as he tries to negotiate his obvious depression, there is a real reason for the changes in pitch from high to low range. Nice to see you Mason!!!

The original song by Bill Withers was done in an upbeat and bouncy style which really doesn't suit the story of the film which inspisred it: Days of Wine and Roses., which is about a couplde who are alcoholics and who are alternately strong and weak. The hung over look and behaviour and the highs and lows of the I knows really capture the ups and downs of such a relationship. I know about dysfunctional relattionships, had a few myself, and this song, escpecially the part in the kitchen really gets to me. I feel the pain he portrays.

Don't worry, my words go away, too. I, too, was struck by the angst Geoff was able to portray in this one. I think he was very conscious of his portrayal. Usually, he has a small half smile on his left side. I noticed it in Big Bad John because that one was so sad. So, yeah, he was working on his acting skills, and it was beautiful to behold. Thanx, Mortius!

Dropping two octaves? Not that hard. I used to get complained at for skipping the single octave expecting to need a deeper drop. Eventually we got some music selected that actually used the bottom of my range. Just. Geoff makes it so seamless and almost unintentional.

@9:25 it is real because he's not technically going "down" per say, he's just spitting the last note in half into subs very quickly. I can do it as well (defiantly does not sound that clear and full because I'm not a professional). I've only being practicing subs for a few months now. but if you can get the timing down, it is possible. At least that's how I hear it being made. In my head I picture subharmonics going backwards instead of down. It's makes figuring them out alot easier for me.
@RobertFerney
@RobertFerney 2 жыл бұрын
He didn't need subs for this. That's just him relaxing into the basement of his chest range. I call it totally real, all chest.
@jared6763
@jared6763 2 жыл бұрын
@@RobertFerney I really wish i knew how to get that low in chest. But for some reason, i can not figure out how to lower chest bass. I'm continuously lowering and cleaning up subs, but it irks me to no end that i still can't get past G2 in chest. C#1 in subs is fairly easy to work down to, but for the love of god, why can't i lower chest.
@grischad20
@grischad20 2 жыл бұрын
@@jared6763 that's not something you can "know" or "learn". You can learn extra technique to reach lower, but getting that low chest is something to be born with. with similar training to him however, you can probably go higher.
@jared6763
@jared6763 2 жыл бұрын
@@grischad20 That's what I've heard, but I still thought that if I could learn to do subs, I could also figure out how to go low in chest. That's disappointing. I mean it's still cool i can hit those low notes, I just have to use subs to do it. Low chest like that has a different sound to it that I would have liked to have been able to produce. I have also heard that whistle notes are using the same technique as subs, just up instead out down, but I can not figure out how that works. Yet.
@grischad20
@grischad20 2 жыл бұрын
@@jared6763 whistle is one technique i havn't really made headway on, but if my inward whistle is anything to go by, it has NOTHING to do with subharmonic. what i do know about whistle is that it's about clamping your vocal chords together (like when you're having a hiccup (or when you're trying to push "something" down so you build pressure in your lungs) and then "declamping" just a tiny bit of a the vocal fold to let some air wheeze through. it's kinda like if you took a guitar string and then made it shorter, you get a higher pitched note edit: i tried again after writing this message initially and managed to sustain a D7 for 5 seconds, and i can confirm, absolutely nothing to do with subharmonics

But in this case I’m thinking that note was dubbed in post-different sound quality and more reverb for one thing, also when he’s done other drops they weren’t quite that abrupt. I think he was going for a different sound right there and this was the way to get it. Great reaction, Mortius. Please take care of your COVID. Even the new variants can be a big deal. That transition around 8:23 I pretty sure was actually done. I'm no singer, but I fall more along voice acting/imitations, so I tend to listen how people speak, or sing, and although I can't do it as cleanly as him I can do something very similar to that laryngeal drop that he does, bear in mind he has significantly more vocal control and range then I do, but I can effectively do the technique to some degree. Also keep in mind his larynx is rolling near the top (which I think is the opharynx) and not that low down, so the transition isn't as bad as you might initially think.

Wasn't he singing this low in Misty Mountain? At least it's how I remember it.

at timestamp 9:42 mortius saying you CANT do the transition, i tried it and i could do it just an octave up. It's tricky, but possible

at 9:47 he uses a subharmonic, so its equivalent to just going down the scale normally so its relatively easy to do (im a bass but absolutely no where near as talented as geoff, and i can not sing as low as him either but i can do that run thing). the subharmonic makes it sound way lower than it is and its obv impressive but not as hard as it sounds to do.

Hang in there, the Covid brain fog will eventually dissipate. But I must admit it's fun watching you not have words...
