This was a hauntingly beautiful rendition. It truly is Jacks lament. And Geoff is only further proving himself as the one and only Pumpkin King. 🎃

I remember a while back when he said he struggled with Oogie Boogie. Look at him now! This is Broadway talent and the perfect song to showcase his range. If you compare this to Oogie it's so much MORE in set, effects, costume, theatrics, mixing, arranging--it just shows how much he, and VoicePlay have come in just a few years of hard work. This is a masterpiece of god level talent. He'd be so embarrassed that I said that though.

That little “breathy” sound your hearing I believe is the sound of the piano’s foot petal being used. At least the piano i have makes a bit of a sound when you release it. And the timing is right.

Well, it’s pretty obvious he recorded this at around 4:30 am. 🦇 Seriously, though, this may be Geoff’s best ever. We knew he could act, but he topped himself here, and the imagination it took to create this, even given Tim Burton’s crazy/imaginative original material. Also, you can really hear how much work he’s put into his singing, even compared to Misty Mountains. His voice just keeps getting better. Great reaction, Dave!!
@embran8486
@embran8486 9 ай бұрын
I think you meant I see Fire, not Misty Mountains. The latter was an early impressive one low wise but highs or soft voice not that outstanding. I See Fire was before this one maybe the best across the board (though have a soft spot for High And Dry) and the best storytelling wise (only contender Big Bad John).
@lkayh
@lkayh 9 ай бұрын
@@embran8486 No, I mean Misty Mountains. The sequel, I See Fire, was relatively recent, so while I do think he keeps working, the differences in his vocal technique and sound aren’t really that noticeable.
@embran8486
@embran8486 9 ай бұрын
@@lkayh I get that,but you said ¨you can really hear how much work he’s put into his singing, even compared to Misty Mountains¨. Even compared to MM? Misty Mountains isn´t that big a showcase of range compared to other songs by him, even at that time. So i suggested I See Fire which showcased high range,soft voice, storytelling more than ever before and now Jack´s Lament all that again plus the scream of oogie boogie allin one.
@lkayh
@lkayh 9 ай бұрын
@@embran8486 Singing isn’t just about range. And I said even compared to Misty Mountains because so many people count that as one of his best works (which it is). Geoff has always been an incredible singer, but you can see how much more control he has gained over his pitch, timbre, and so many other things, just over the past couple years. I See Fire was released only 3 months ago, so while I’m sure he’s been working hard since then, you won’t see as much improvement-hasn’t been enough time. Have a nice evening.

I have officially changed the lyrics of this song from "I, Jack, The Pumpkin King" to "I, Geoff, The Pumpkin King". Let it be known. 😆 Fantastic reaction as usual, Dave.

You actually have quite a bit in common with Geoff. The two of you never disappoint! This was quite the roller coaster ride. His switching back-and-forth between registers really emphasizes the two sides of Jack. He’s revered for his scary side, but he wants to do something just a little different. Jack’s Lament has always been my favorite song from the movie. It’s a beautiful song, and Geoff’s little character details really bring Jack to life. He has the most expressive hand gestures!! When Geoff finger-walks across the top of the piano, his hands actually look skeletal. I *love* the slump when he’s Mr. Unlucky😞.

OMG! I am enjoying this reaction now for the third time. I love love LOVE your facial expressions which are able to show so exactly what I feel inside. Also your humour is so wonderful and heart-warming, not to mention your smartness and knowledge of music. I watched several "experts" reacting to this piece of art, but you where the ONLY one, who recognized the conspicuity piano sound at the beginning. I interpreted it a little bit different: weren't all the tones of the left hand missing? "Dead keys on a cursed piano played by a dead creature?" - Funfact: all the bass keys missing I hope, that no one will ever flatline you and you always stay fit and healthy, because we really need you.

He also said it's not how low you can sing but how good it sounds. True Tim Foust can sing high when it comes to doo wop but Geoff's high are more like rock high. I am so glad he is showing us his full range now. He is truly amazing. His acting skills are by far the best. He is a total package. He was just getting over Covid & lost his voice a little. @whatitdodave @1:02 1). Much of the volume, (dynamics), are controlled by touch, but also 2). Normally, the hammers on a piano hit three strings for each note, but this is a grand piano, so it has a soft pedal that actually shifts the hammers over, so that they only hit one string for each note, (una corda). This type of soft pedal can give it that very fine, thin sound. Upright types of pianos, (uprights, consoles, spinets), usually have soft pedals that partially mute the strings, so it's a different type of sound. (I've read that they are making some that shift, like a grand).

You're thinking of the 'soft' pedal. There are three pedals on the bottom of the piano that do different things to the strings, the soft one moves all the hammers a tidge to the left or right, so that when the note is played, the hammer is only striking one string instead of all three. Sometimes there's a little catch where you can move the actual pedal and thus it stays down without you having to keep your foot on it the whole time. It smooths out the sound. (There's also a 'long' or 'damper' pedal, and that one moves the damper pads away from the keys, which causes the key to resonate even after you've taken your finger off the key.)

I think the thing I appreciate most about his range is that most people who have a crazy range have an extreme high end, and a decent mid or low end. He's the opposite, extreme low end and can hit surprisingly high notes with clarity. It's refreshing and unique.
