Geoff worked so hard on this. He's trying out new skills with green screen and it was a battle. The end result is why we love him though. He's so amazingly talented in all aspects of music and production. It's becoming a thing to say we got "Geoffed" when watching him. LOL He did some country with his solo of Country Roads, and Daddy Sang Bass with VoicePlay.

When the genre was still "country WESTERN", there was a strong tradition of what were known as "story songs." Marty Robbins and Roger Miller were famous for them, but most male country artists had a few in their repertoire.

He let down gentle, perfect description, Dave! The harmony, the whistle, execution, it's just wonderful. It is a spooky song originally. Cowboy sees cattle in the sky, then the cowboys herding them. Those cowboys are ghosts, condemned to herd the Devil's cattle because of the life they led. They are warning him to shape up or he'll have to join them for eternity. You could react to Geoff (and Voiceplay) all day, every day, and I would sit and watch.

A good surprise would have been if in the last 10 seconds of the music video he should have had one of his ghost forms wave all the others away. (The one in black hat 🎩). They fade into shadow and then he goes back to the flames 🔥 and black backdrop… and then finished with the low bass drop as a ghost

This is western style music, Stan Jones (6/5/1914-12/13/1963)wrote and recorded it late 1948 inspired by a folklore story he heard as a child(when someone dies ,their spirit leaves the body and goes to the sky) the song has been sung by Burl Ives, Vaughn Monroe (this may be the most notable recording),Johnny Cash and it was used for the theme for "GHOST RIDER "and Geoff as always does a great job of this classic and a favorite.

This is more Western than Country. It feels as if you've been riding for days on horseback, rounding up cattle, The sky is late afternoon when the sun catches the clouds where shapes in the sky are highlighted by the sun.(the red eyed cattle in the sky). My dad had the Marty Robbins version that I listened to. Love the transllucency of the Ghost Riders and their warning.

I think of this as “cowboy music”. I’m not a fan of country music in general, but I do love the older stuff and a lot of it has this sound. I can see some old leathery cowboys sitting around a campfire during a cattle drive singing this. But I didn’t really remember the lyrics is being spooky. I was a child then and just remember singing out the “yippie-i-ays ” 🤠 I also remember my dad watching Hee Haw and listening to the parody “ghost chickens 🐔in the sky”. After listening to Geoff’s version I went out to check to see if it was still funny. It is.

Thanks for your reaction! This was another frequent request from his patreon channel that was such a great suggestion for him. The original (or various covers of it) was not as spooky but had the deep bass and country/western story telling feel to it that lent itself so nicely to Geoff's ghost story narration skills, his deep base, and his backup harmonies of 'ghost riders' (it kind of reminds me of "Big Bad John"). I knew that he would make something special out of this song and he did in spite of struggles with trying new things with green screen (Eli helped him out with some of the technical glitches he had).

Ghost Riders in the Sky is a classic ghost story covered by many artists over the years. Geoff’s cover is amazing, and I would also highly recommend the version performed by Irish musician Colm McGuinness! Fun Fact: The Marvel Comics character, Ghost Rider, was originally inspired by this song; being a spirit of vengeance that “wrangles the devil’s herd” by collecting supernatural debts come due.

Geoff rides another bronc to the timer! (best western motif I could come up with)!! I would consider Ghost Riders to be a Western song, but not a country song. For me, there IS a difference between country and Western, rather than the conglomerated country/Western that you often hear. Country tends to be more the "my man/woman left me, what am I gonna do?" genre, but Western is much more heavily influenced by Spanish music, and often doesn't have anything to do with personal relationships - as this song demonstrates.

I agree. This is more the kind of music I associate with old Western movies, rather than country style as a genre. There have been so many different variations of this song. The original singer/ writer of this song was Stan Jones, Western actor/singer. Though I love Goeff's version the best, his incarnation reminds me of Stan's original the most. I heard a 1948 recording of it
@Swishyhead2 жыл бұрын
As other people have said, this song is about a cowboy meeting a herd of the devil's cattle and the ghostly cowboys condemned to ride after them. I'm familiar with the Johnny Cash version, which comes across more like a ghost story or cautionary tale that older cowboys might say to the younger ones around a campfire. Geoff's version sounds like the ghosts themselves are warning you to change your ways.

I think what makes his covers different in general is that when you go back to the source material (either original artist or most known cover) it sounds 'thin'. Geoff adds a crap-ton of dimension to his covers. Loving your appreciation of his entire range and the balance he strikes within the song. The video creation was a real bear though, with an awesome end result for us all to enjoy.
