You expect the deep notes with Geoff, but I loved how we heard more of the higher part of his range and ability. It shows how balanced and complete he really can be.

I always enjoy your reactions & I think you're right this song is so subtle every note counts. When this came on Patreon I said I always love everything Geoff & VP do but when they cover a song I really like I panic it won't hit with me. I adore the Disturbed version of this but for me this blows that out of the water. I think he was right to not distract with the other Geoffs too they get their moment! Eli's lighting does a wonderful job too.

Where do you go from butter - make it into caramel perhaps, with sugar for sweetness - and then some saltiness as well so maybe we get salted caramel. I do like a salted caramel. :)

Geoff is at a point in his age and talent that he has confidence in who he is and what he does - but he also keeps reaching to learn and do. He is not an artist who falls back on their laurels and keeps repeating hits from reluctance to take a chance. He keeps stretching, surprising, and amazing us. (Tho much credit needs to go to Layne and the other folks - who obviously say "let us hold your beer - OK, now try *this*!")

I think you are on point. This one is not missing a single thing. When Geoff first started his channel it was more about doing songs we knew, just lower. That quickly evolved into making it his own, but still low bass forward. With Ghost Riders in the Sky and The Sound of Silence, the lows are there, like seasoning, but the songs are complete re-arrangements of what our ears have been conditioned to by the original or most iconic versions previously released. He has definitely grown as an artist with his solo works, and it translates back into his arrangements for VP. It seems like this one hit you very deeply in your feels, when I first listened to it, I put it on repeat until I heard every nuance of the sounds. This one was emotionally heavy from beginning to end for me. I appreciate your response to the song. Always love your reactions.😊

I especially liked your comment about the echoes. I had been trying to understand what it was about that almost ‘hollow’ beat that resonated with me. And you calling it an echo brought it clear. It’s really part of that empty, dark ‘stage’ he’s performing this on. Echoing and alone. I get the feeling that everything other than his ‘solo’ voice and the piano are in his mind - part of the dream. And it is reinforced when the backing Geoff voices cut out. It was a really good choice to not visualize the backups this time. And at the end, we come back to Geoff and the piano. His talk with the old friend ‘Darkness’ finished.

The sound design on this arrangement is amazing. It adds so much to the music playing above it. And that spooky feeling you were talking about, I keep describing Geoff's arrangement here as hauntingly beautiful. Your whole talk about making music was so eloquently described. You always have a way with words that no one else does. It's part of why I enjoy your reactions so much. Butter ascended 🤣

I am so used to harmonies and multiple Geoffs, that hearing the harmony without more hims was kind of strange. Almost unsettling. Then I realized that I could better concentrage on the sound, which was necessary with this cover. I want to see more Geoff clones in the future, but I think this was the perfect choice this time. Thanx, Dave, love your reactions to Geoff and Voiceplay!

"...something triumphant is coming..." This is probably the best description I've ever seen/heard that describes the incredible heights Geoff writes into his songs. You're so right about the instrumentals--they are perfect for this song and the feelings it invokes. I love his low bass, but it's starting to be his tenor range that shocks me now. I just love Geoff's voice period, and the fact he arranges his own music shows how incredibly talented he is. *sigh

I realize I'm about to get deep, but to me, Geoff takes us through many elements of how silence can sound. It can be gentle and quiet, or scary, or so silent, it's LOUD and feels suffocating. Physically, it can be relaxing or puts you on absolute pins and needles and you have an anxiety attack so the air feels sucked out of your lungs. Musically, Geoff has all of that going on. They wsy he portrays silence itself is perfect. Thank you for your reaction as always! May God bless you always!❤🎉😊

I totally agree with your final analysis of Geoff's musical progression. I have listened to most of his library and, of course, the new, and it is becoming more full, more rich....more expressive, I think....of his complex creativity. This is a creator of vocal art. Pictures painted with heavenly harmonies, highs and lows, unity and discord. Fullness of life. It feels like Geoff is being reborn. We better grow with him, or he will leave us all behind. Thanks Dave for your special insights from your own art background. More to appreciate about you my friend. ❤

At first I didn’t want to listen to it because he’s singing another one of my favorites and I was pretty contempt with the Disturbed version (I always look for the lyrics to match the music). When I listened to it, though, I think I did a 180 and placed it on the top space of my list. From the echo that (in my opinion) represents the white noise we are used to to a point we stop listening to it, the relaxed vocals in the beginning that represent weariness, the fact that he’s continually bringing it down to just a voice and the white noice. I could be nitpicking for hours like an obsessed critic trying to find hidden meanings behind poetry. Because, for me, what he did here was like a revelation, going; “Here• this is what you’ve been missing from the song” and yep, that’s exactly what I’ve been missing Thank you so much for a beautiful reaction

I usually get to your reactions sooner-than-later- but it’s been a frantic kind of spring this year. Your appreciation for the depth in artistic choices in videos& songs is a selling point for me. As a fellow visual artist, I relate to why you analyzed this piece the way you did. This song is a *masterclass* in storytelling thru composition, arrangement, performance, sound design, production, and polish. Even *before* the video. (I don’t know how much heavy lifting that piano did in the production- but it seems you could sound design In complement to/ “around” an instrument like that!) I agree with the assessment that this is possibly his most “complete” piece. Honestly “Ain’t no Sunshine” hit me similar. My perception is that he’s been able to share the workload and develop artistically and creatively because of Voiceplay, and he can highlight what intrigues him creatively with his solo work. Always fantastic to see your insightful videos- I’m delighted you put yourself out here for us. Thank you.

I've said on another channel that I grew up with the Simon and Garfunkel original (I was about 7 or 8 when that came out) but the more versions I hear the better it sounds - going back to the original now does nothing for me; it's almost, for me, bland in comparison to the cover versions. I love Geoff's version and the more I listen to it the more I hear in it. It is, as you said, a rollercoaster. It's somehow powerful and sorrowful at the same time. I also love that we get a glimpse of Geoff the rock god near the end, which is something I would love to see more of!
@Mark_Agamotto1313_Smith

Another fan on a different channel said it quite succinctly, S&G's was a warning, Disturbed's was the anger at the warning being ignored, and Geoff's was the sorrow afterward. Someone else added somewhere that PTX's was new hope, though I haven't heard PTX's version yet.
@deniblackmore2179
@deniblackmore2179 Жыл бұрын
@@Mark_Agamotto1313_Smith That's a very good way of putting it Mark. I've not heard the PTX version yet either. I also saw another person comment that Geoff and Eli together on this would be great. Presumably they envisaged Geoff bringing the sorrow and Eli's grittier rock edge bringing the anger. Could work well. We got some rock star grit in "Queen in 5 minutes" from both of them and I'd like to see more of that from them.

I don't know if you've come across any of Geoff's videos where he talks his philosophy toward arrangements. He's on record as saying that he explicitly tries to make his covers DIFFERENT from all that have come before (and has asserted that this is the philosophy of Voiceplay as well). The idea being, what's the point of him creating a new cover exactly like another one, when you already have the other one. What's the point of him trying to do Johnny Cash (Ghost Riders in the Sky) when Johnny Cash already exists, and so on. Point being, given the stratospheric popularity of the Disturbed cover of Sound of Silence, I knew when I heard this was coming down the pipe that Geoff was going to go out of his way to give us something that was the polar opposite of Disturbed's explosive, aggressive arrangement. And this 100% fits the bill. Where Disturbed's is aggressive and angry, Geoff's cover here is mournful and somber and quiet. I really don't know another way to describe this one. Geoff REALLY holds back on the potential for crashing, melodramatic emotion in this one and keeps everything controlled and low-key. The power of the lyrics just hit you in an entirely different way.

The only 2 times I've almost been brought to tears was when I randomly took my mom to see Han Zimmer and listening to Geoff's cover. Both times I had no idea what to expect. Both times my jaw was on the floor. I honestly have no idea how music can produce those types of feelings and emotion but holy hell. He did a spectacular job on the cover, and I'm glad you also picked up on a lot of the little bits that I heard. Most if not all my friends that I showed this to simply just cant comprehend the level of talent shown.
