Back in the 90's I was a police officer and we had an issue with the brakes on our police Rover SD1's. Being automatic if the brakes were really hammered on a long run the brakes would fail and the pedal went to the floor. However, once the brakes had been allowed to cool the pedal and brakes would work again. Several police drivers had accidents due to this fault that was not evident when the cars were subsequently examined. I went to an accident involving a SD1 and the drivers foot and pedal were on the floor. He refused to release the pedal and get out until it had been seen by the garage sargeant.

As an ex taxi driver I was rear-ended twice at Gatwick Norths drop off by EV'S on separate occasions. Both times the drivers blamed it on using the one pedal braking. Luckily on both occasions there was no damage or injury. But it does beg the question how safe is it and how proficient the drivers were with it. That is a packed area with lots of pedestrians and general chaos.

Had a friend of the family who had a Jaguar iPace, he was going down the motorway and the brakes totally failed. He though took his foot off the accelerator and brought the car to a halt due to, I guess, the regenerative braking and natural deceleration? The car was taken to Jag and he was told by them that it was a very frequent event, apparently there is a separate battery that governs the brakes and, unlike the main battery, wasn’t being recharged. He immediately handed the car back and got a hybrid.

The ipace regenerative braking on high is so effective you hardly need to use the brake pedal when driving normally. Lovely car to drive. The ipace forum shows that the brake problem is not frequent but has happened a few times with people. More frequently, false faults have shown up on the dash and often 'seem' to have been solved by replacing the 12V batts and/or internal charging unit to them. We got the false faults showing up a little while back on ours (MY20) but the batts appear to be fine and put it down to water ingress through leaking windscreen at the same time getting into the dash electrics, though we do not know for sure. The dealer made out the problem was solved with a software update but I don't think that had anything to do with it; the charging software was updated but I believe this was the main traction battery, not the two 12V batts - I could be wrong; reliable technical data is impossible to find. The dealer often gives you no written list of things done unless you ask for it and even then it is sparse. Though concerning, we experienced no control problems at all and got the windscreen changed at the dealer; it was still just inside the warranty period. They mentioned they had to dry things out a bit before they could get their testing software to work but all the software is so fussy that it could just have been a software initiation issue or incompetence. We have had no problem since (in 4months). All modern cars seem far too complex compared to the benefit it gives to the consumer. EVs get a bashing but it seems to me that most problems are not with the EV aspect but rather the speed with which the manufacturer designs and tests. Over the air software updates are now a reason to ship cars before they have been properly tested; look at Tesla. There is no choice of garage for repair anymore. Loads of unique parts with zero stock across many brands. Friends just had their Audi off the road for 3months awaiting a new break light for the MOT; pathetic. When you are waiting for a part it feels like you never actually bought a car; it is effectively still owned by the manufacturer who has allowed you a long-term test drive of their prototype in exchange for the purchase cost.

I had an old Hillman Imp many years ago and the throttle got jammed open when the inner cable frayed and got caught-up in the outer cable. I came to a stop by turning the engine off, and got home by substituting the choke cable. The irony is that an EV should be less complex than an ICE. Ok, the charging is a little tricky but it's just batteries, motors and motor controllers. But the manufacturers choose to put in so much unnecessary software crap and 'automatic' systems in modern cars that are not sufficiently tested that things go wrong and the things that go wrong need the manufacturer to fix them because parts are not common and propitiatory software is needed to diagnose the computers (not that much diagnosis takes place; dealers just tend to replace modules until the problem appears to go away).

@Geoff Buys Cars i have been watching vids on ipace owners and the issues they've had. There have been some recalls over the past few years...one for brakes not working properly and one for an update to be done as quite a few had set on fire. The recall for the update it would seem that a lot of people weren't informed of by the dealer and found out just from seeing things on the internet. One video a guy talks about water getting into the car as there was a problem with the seal on the windscreen. It wasn't like large amounts of water, and he put it down to condensation the 1st time he noticed. It was found to be a manufacturing issue and had it replaced. In the comments there were other ipace owners saying they had the same issue. Everyone knows water and electronics don't mix well. I operate the big floor machine at work, battery powered and press levers on handles to accelerate. Turns out though they hadn't made the control panel waterproof and seen as it gets taken outside in all weather to be emptied and refilled, water had gotten into the control panel and one morning it just went out of control...couldn't stop it zooming across the warehouse and that was without even being hold of the levers. Maybe nathan hadn't noticed water getting into the car which if a bit got into any of the control panel, it could of caused it start malfunctioning. And this issue did turn out to be a manufacturing issue so its fair to assume that plenty of other cars will have had the same problem. Some of the speeds of the cars in other vids with malfunctioning ev's, upto 120 mile an hr and people actually being killed and the car crashing into a few things before actually stopping! So no, i don't think his story is far fetched at all

As I said in the previous video (for which I was attacked by many people) his story does not add up: 1) If the car was stuck in top gear, full revs, why did the speed vary? 2) Managed to take a roundabout at 120mph? 3) Incredibly, when the police turned up he managed to get it into neutral.. 4) Not the first time he has had this issue that has not affected anyone else 5) Jaguar found nothing wrong with it 6) The police didn't impound it 7) Within seconds of the car going wrong he called the police? No way would this be your first action.

There are no gears, it's a single-speed, constant mesh transmission, no clutch. If there had been a kill switch, it could have turned off power to the motor/s, maybe all EV's should have a big main breaker switch in reach of the driver.

No one that buys an I-pace can take a roundabout at 120. You’d have to both be a petrol head and be a good driver and we know the combination is rare. I do a lot of track driving and the amount of times I’ve come up against money and money has lost is countless. Few years ago I was allegedly racing a Lamborghini urus (in 🔒⬇️) we both took the same corner around the same speed yet he lost control and hit the railing. I was in a rwd 430d and even had fun on the exit, him not so much. Problem is money buys you all sorts but it does not buy you skill. I highly doubt anyone with the skills to handle that would buy an ipace, it’s just not conceivable😅

Amongst other holes in the story, the M57 south bound onto the M62 east bound is a filter lane, no need to go to the roundabout. He said the police had told him to use the hard shoulder so he would have had to cross over this filter lane to go to the roundabout which doesnt make any sense at all. The police have obviously interrogated the car and the motorway cameras to compile a case against him and the fact that this didnt take too long at all suggests his story is total fantasy

The carb linkage on my Vauxhall Carlton automatic jammed on high throttle on the M4 near Heathrow in the early 80's. I got through the traffic and onto the hard shoulder by standing on the brakes as hard as I could and then turned off the engine. Within two minutes a police car arrived. I explained that the car was not driveable but I would be able to sort it out as I was a DIY mechanic and had some tools with me. The whole incident was a bit stressful but definitely not terrifying unless you can't keep a clear head. My passenger was a woman from work as we had been to a business meeting together. She told the police officers that she didn't feel safe on the hard shoulder with all the traffic thundering past so they took her away in the patrol car to drop her at the nearest tube station which was kind of them.

"nothing to see here". As somebody who worked in JLR for 2 decades I can tell you, from personal experience, they don't care about the customer or the employee, they care only about JLR and profit. In 2014, as a Christmas present, I was involved in a near fatal RTA and almost killed by a world renowned logistics company contracted to JLR and sponsoring F1, 20 years working for them only to be discarded like a piece of meat at the end of it, what did I get out of it? only one leg and my livelihood destroyed. My 2005 Mercedes clk350, and Tesla Model 3. My car fully comp £167.00 the Tesla £675.00. Before I had the Merc I had a 2020 MX5, that was actually slightly cheaper than the Merc, so, if I swapped my car for a milk float. I couldn’t charge at home, (first floor flat) my car would depreciate faster than Max Verstappen on a hot lap, the nearest charger to me is about a mile away, there are two in my local Tesco, which are constantly being vandalised. If it gets a bit chilly it probably won’t want to start. The good news is it can accelerate really fast, so my car hating gf who says she is ‘sick’ of cars, can finally prove it. Steering racks on Discovery Sports is a much more prevalent issue. JLR actually issued a full safety recall on it. The bolts holding the motor are the wrong material, corrode and snap. Happened on mine, 2 out of 3 bolts went... because the bolts snap and leave part of it in situ, the fix is a new rack. Parts are as you would expect parts in short supply. Discovery 5's also have a long history of poor sealant on windscreens with huge leaks and resulting damage. These are made in Slovakia with the Defender.

I did have something similar in my car, the car mat managed to get on top of the accelerator peddle - the brake did work when pressed gently (ie cut power), but as soon as I lifted off it accelerated up again - took about a minute to work it out - as looked at my feet to see the mat over the accelerator - this was at around 60mph on motorway (going upto 70 and down to 50)
@damianlewis75508 ай бұрын
JLR told me the default if the accelerator is pressed at the same time as the brake, is that the car will brake. The issue I experienced was that the brake went solid and couldn’t be pressed. And my foot was nowhere near the accelerator as I was regenerative braking to a stop at the lights. Would have broken my leg if my coliision had been at speed.

I had problems with a Alfa in the 1990s wich cut out on the M5 between Stonehouse and Dursley on the return it did the same. When I gave the Car back and said what had happened I was told this happens every time there. An article in the local newspaper reported how cars which parked at a shop ,would not restart but when they were removed away from the shop they restarted , what I am saying is the problem could becoming from another source not necessarily internal problem's they are connected to outside forces. I thought modern cars could be stopped by the Police if required?.

A fault in year 2000 Audi A3 and TT radios illustrates how a sofware bug can get through the testing process successfully, then lie dormant, then strike at an unpredictable time. The programmer who programmed the radio volume setting used the wrong type of memory for each incremental volume change. He used memory which was supposed to be used only to record settings on start up and switch off. This piece of memory physically degraded after around 50,000 read-write operations. Consequently, after around 5 years of use, the volume control gave unpredictable results, for example the volume goes up when you try to turn it down. It took a bunch of Russian software engineers to discover this, by reverse-engineering the code in the radio chip. EVs could potentially have loads of similar bugs lurking in them, waiting to take control away from the driver.

Okay so I've read every comment in this thread, agreed with a few and been in despair at the state of humanity after reading some. And no ones worked it out. No one has mentioned CAN-bus. Google it and see how complicated it is, its not simple copper wires moving 12 volts around anymore like in your old Ford Escort. All modern cars use it including this iPace. I have a 20 year old saloon that uses it. CAN-bus in my experience doesnt like, getting old, dust or moisture. Add to that the issues jaguar is having with soluble windscreen glue and there is the answer. Damp, cranky CAN-bus can and will do whatever the hell it feels like doing until you clean it and dry it out. The CAN-bus connectors in mine are very similar to those used in desktop computers in the 90s. Those connectors had similar issues with dust build up after just 2 to 3 years and caused the weirdest issues. Thats what led me to start cleaning the CAN-BUS connectors in my car and it has solved so many weird issues that qualified technician's couldn't diagnose. Think carefully about what I've written, think again about the timeline that this iPace has had, and from memory it was raining the 2nd time this driver had issues. Its not rocket science, it just using your noggin for what it was designed for instead of darting down rabbit holes.

You seem to have fallen into the role of being a voice of reason for motoring.... obviously with other you tube bloggers. This has got me thinking, and the question nobody seems to be asking... what are motoring organisations like the AA and the RAC doing these days? Their voice on these issues we're facing seems to be silent! Are they just recovery services these days? They used to be so much more... In the motorcycling field we also have the BMF and MAG and the BMF seems to have merged into the establishment as well. MAG seem to be re-energising but they seem to keep harping on about the compulsory helmet issue.... personally to me that issue has been long dead and nobody realistically wants the right to beat their heads upon the tarmac! Anyhow the real champions of sensible motoring choices and freedoms seem to have fallen to people like yourself and your many friends, and I wonder why we never hear from people like the AA and RAC ! It would be good to know they are at least aware of the issues facing motorists and they are representing us and are not completely bought out by the establishment! What are the AA and the RAC even for in 2024? Thanks for your energy for motoring issues. Look after yourself and how it weighs on you... and let's hope for a few victories so we can focus on the fun stuff!
