Watched your 2nd video, enjoyed it. Retired American living in Phillipines, interested in old Volvos, may purchase one as my next car if I can find a decent one I can afford. So any Volvo clips you upload I will watch. John

The most common issue on the old 850s for no start is lack of fuel. There's the red relay under the fuses in the engine bay, that can go faulty. There's also the main fuel injector relay on top of the radiator fan shroud. With the ignition on, flick that relay to see if the contacts are sticking. If it is, there's an obvious inrush of fuel when it primes the fuel injector manifold. Easy test for fuel pressure is to remove the valve cap on the end of the fuel rail and press the valve. I've played this game with ours since 1998. I've never suffered from cam position sensor or crank position, nor temp sensor but those sudden no starts... my vote is one of the fuel relays (or fuel pump, i'm on my third).

Heard some say the hydraulic lifters can get stuck when warm and when you go to restart the car there's no compression and it won't start. Got a service bulletin about it in VADIS about a redesigned lifter that drains the oil faster, started coming in 1997.
@djtaylorutube
@djtaylorutube Күн бұрын
@@1873Winchester Yes, I think that's the one that's also referred to as lawnmower syndrome, where the car is started and then turned off almost straight away. Then it behaves as if there's no compression and just turns over. Been there, done that too. 👍

With regard to the long start time for your car, is it like that when cold? A common issue is the non return valve failing due to age and the fuel drains back to the tank, leaving the fuel rail unpressurised, such that when you start cranking, you're doing so while the fuel pump is also priming. On ours, we just turn ignition on and wait, you can hear the fuel rail pressurise and then when it's done, THEN crank. I'd be interested to know if yours is doing that.

@@GeoffBuysCars It may not be that then still worth confirming though, possibly temperature sensor? If it's passing the wrong temperature to the ECU then it will be incorrectly fuelling for temperature compensation.

My 1997 V70 T5 broke down the day after I bought it 6 weeks ago and it had to be recovered. It's still broken, although it drives in limp mode. Supposedly a MAF issue but Bosch MAFs are unobtanium. Its a horrible feeling if you are an honest person when you sell your previously reliable car and it gives the next really nice person nothing but grief. Sold my lovely low miles Corsa C to a local young lad who has had 2 breakdowns in the middle of nowhere, found myself offering to fit his new brake discs for him by way of compo 😆 By contrast I've spent 25 grand on a Lotus before and had nothing but indifference from the dealer I bought it from when a solitary fault showed up...
