I truly love the attention to detail of having Gimli sing this, as he is the one singing the poem in the book. And as it is about forefathers it even makes sense to bring in the dwarfs we already know even though most of them are dead by Gimli's time. What a brilliant version of the piece.

They're not that far apart in age, though? In the Hobbit, Fili was 82 years old, Kili was 77, and Gimli would've been 62. So he was only 15 years younger than the youngest dwarf there. It's not "Gimli's ancestors;" Fili and Kili were literally his slightly-older cousins who died tragically too soon. Which makes it all the more tragic to me, because Moria wasn't just the home of Gimli's distant ancestors. He also lost friends and family there, too, people he personally knew and loved.

If I remember right, the other members of the Fellowship didn't understand how glorious Moria had once been or why the Dwarves were still so obsessed with the place long after it was lost, but even Legolas was touched when Gimli sang this song in the book. Hearing Geoff sing it so beautifully here, it's not hard to see why. (Or why Galadriel understood its importance to Gimli when they met her later in Lothlorien--she remembered seeing it all in person.)

In the pre-dawn, the General knew something was amiss as he could hear the frightened screams of one of the forward scouts before ever seeing him, who was no longer forward but was returning in a rush. The poor sweating soldier finally slid to a stop and collapsed at death's door directly in front of the General, weakening as his energy left him, all the while repeating over-and-over "He's coming! He brings the Quakes as he sings! Get away fast, before he comes or the ground will swallow all!" The message was so dire that the soldier had purposely sought out the General himself, rather than seeking chain-of-command. The scrawny starved Orc kept mumbling the warning until he in fact passed, as the General looked on. One of the others sneered. "He's led the enemy right to us! Let us eat the little -" but the General cut the big Orc off. "You shall not touch him. He deserves to be honored. This one has saved us all this day, with his very last breath. This was good warning. I know of whom he speaks." The others looked at the General in awe as he decided what to do next. "Break camp, let us move away swiftly. We go North." When nobody moved, the General cursed in Black-speech, then yelled "NOW!" Everybody ran every which way, performed assorted tasks to break camp quickly, pack up and travel at Double-Time march. The General would not forget that poor messenger of death for the remainder of his life, grateful for every day drawing breath that would come to him next.

What a beautiful cap to the tale that began in Misty Mountains with four warriors about to embark on an epic journey, continued in I See Fire with them grimly preparing to face near-certain doom and hoping they will not be forgotten, and now ended with Gimli singing of his people's glorious history, his ancestors (those same four lost warriors) appearing with him as ghosts or memories - as if their prayer to be remembered has been fulfilled. I had tears in my eyes from the first verse on. Gorgeous. The harmonies and arrangement are just perfect, but I also want to shout out that stunning instrumental track. I keep hearing so many fascinating details (the clever use of forge tools and weapons as instruments sprinkled throughout, for one). The dynamic flow of the arrangement keeps what could be a repetitive song in constant movement and feels like proper storytelling. As an enormously passionate LOTR fan, I deeply appreciate the thoughtfulness you put towards these "dwarfish" covers, Geoff. Although this finishes out the trilogy of Middle Earth covers in a satisfying way, I wouldn't say no to more covers in this world since you do such great justice to it.

Once again, you have done what you do best with this song, and I am not only referring to singing it very, very low. I have always enjoyed Clamavi De Profundis’ version of this song, and I am in love with the ways that you have taken inspiration from their delivery and performance. But the thing you really do best is tell the story. I see and hear and feel all the emotion, all the loss and the hope, the wistfulness and the joy, in every aspect of what you have done with this. You bring Tolkien’s exquisite lyrics to life for me in a way I’ve never experienced before, I understand and feel them so much more deeply. I can’t help thinking, this is what Tolkien meant for us to feel when we hear these words. And then of course, I break down and cry for a minute, cause how else am I supposed to react to that thought? Thank you, once again, for breaking and filling my heart in ever evolving ways.

The first time I heard Clamavi De Profudis sing this song, I fell in love. I've never thought I would find the version I like even more. But this is phenomenal. Instead of a song about a distant, legendary past, this feels more relevant and immediate, with much clearer emotions. While, as always, I'm truly impressed by Geoff's voice and range, and I absolutely love costumes, I think the interpretation of the lyrics and the melody makes it great. It is beautiful, and I know I will be listening to it many times in the future.

I’m listening to this masterpiece since 3 weeks almost in loops. I can’t stop, I can’t have enough, it’s like a lullaby i don’t know why. It conforts me in a way. I play it as background music while I’m drawing or writing too. Thank you so much !

I think this is the best out of the three dwarven songs. And the way he lingers on "Kazah-dûm" brings so much emotion although I haven't yet figured out why exactly. Stunning!❤

This is story-telling at it's best! For me, telling a story through song always makes it more memorable, with the melody and rhyming making it easier to remember the story itself. Geoff is just so good at this, it's not even fair. Not only do we get the beautiful arrangement and instruments, but Geoff brought back not only the dwarves from Misty Mountains and I See Fire, but added Gimli into the mix (although Gimli appears to have been working out quite a bit!). The dwarves haven't lost their touch with a song! While I See Fire is still my favorite video on Geoff's channel, this one is not far behind, and from a story-telling perspective, is a little better IMO. But all of the dwarven songs have been wonderful, and this video just adds to their splendor. Kudos to everyone involved in the making of this video - Geoff, Kathy, Layne, Tony, Eli, Rick, and everyone else who helped out in creating this amazing video - and let's not forget Tommy, who supervised Geoff as he worked in the garage!

It's the first video to my new playlist category "Jacky's Lullabies". Which I need to go through the rest of my playlist and add my other lullabies to it. These are songs I listen to with my sleep headphones on repeat when I'm laying down relaxing or going to sleep. Which one depends on what my brain wants to listen to. They are songs that clear my mind and settle my body so I have a more restful sleep. So far besides this one..... Voiceplay.... In The Hall of The Mountain King, Classical Chaos, Hide and Seek, Dragonborn Comes, Halo. Be Prepared (when it's released next week). Geoff.... Ain't No Sunshine, Rains of Castemere, Unshaken, I See Fire. Pattycake.... Villains Haunted Mansion, You're The One With The Problem (Genshin Impact). Other... Redemption, Immersion (both Syts Piano), Light of Seven (Game of Thrones-Silva Screen Records). Yeah. Not your typical lullabies but those bore me. Gotta listen to what I love and want to listen to over and over and over and etc.

The costumes! Everything else too, but between the different tones and intonations in the vocals and how dramatic the costumes are, I had to check to really believe that this was a solo act. And yes, it is heartbreaking that Gimli starts alone, and then is accompanied by Fili and Kili and other fallen dwarves, and then... alone.

THESE GUYS ARE SO TALENTED! Gimli is sooooooo handsome 😍 Seriously, though, with a void as deep as the abyss below the Bridge of Khazad-Dûm, these dwarf tunes are right in your wheelhouse, Geoff. But not only because of your deep voice, also because of your supremely incredible ability to take fairly repetitive songs and to breathe new life into them, changing them subtly here and there, taking our ears and brains and hearts on a journey through Middle Earth itself through song. ⛰ ♥

Geoff enchanted me again and transported me to a magical location of a bygone era. This journey began in the shadows of the Misty Mountains and continued with the melodies of I See Fire and now I am here in the depths of Moira. Tolkien's tales and poems come to life and become reality, and memories live forever. Five beautiful voices ( Yes, I know it's only one! ) Slowly melt into each other and build a harmony that even the tiniest speck of dust in Khazad-Dûm can shake. The background music is amazing! Starting with the sound of soft drops of water, which nevertheless fall so sharply into the lake of silence of memories and the metallic sounds that evoke the sound of swords daggers bards, the mystical sound of strings and drums...As it all slowly unfolds and melts into one. There is a lot of feeling in this beautifully constructed song and memories... memories of warriors... I'd love to hear more... And the view is really impressive! The background, the lighting, the costumes, the make-up and the great direction deserve special thanks! Now I don't want to list names, but everyone did a fantastic job! Thanks for this masterpiece!

It’s a surprisingly short list. Mostly Geoff and Kathy (his wife), but with Rick Underwood for make-up and ‘beard-wrangling’ and Eli from VoicePlay for lighting, plus Layne and Tony from PattyCake Productions (and VoicePlay). These guys are just Uber-talented! Not just in their voices.

@@hwyla4416 Yes, thank you. I know all this and I have already written on other platforms. Now I didn't want to list everyone again, but usually in most posts I mention everyone who contributed to the making of a music video. They are fantastically talented and their work is amazing! They always do their best or even more, and without them such masterpieces would not be possible!

"When Durin woke and walked alone... He named the nameless hills and dells..." There's something about this part of the song, this specific bit melodically that I really love. It goes from the really deep voice of (I think) Thorin, to the other Dwarf with a higher voice, it is really really soothing to the ears. The beat also starts here so I believe that's part of it too. I've been a bit obsessed with you recently Mr. Castellucci, you have a magnificent voice, thank God for giving you this natural talent and thank you for practicing so much and gracing our ears with your hard work built upon said talent.

The vibrato on the low notes gets me. Not many basses can relax on a D or D# enough to produce such a strong and healthy vibrato. That's one extra bit of evidence of Geoff's development as a bass singer through practice but also as his voice matures and he ages closer to what is considered "prime" age for many bass singers.
