Great video, I was wondering why there have been endless minor and severe delays for the last two weeks - due to a shortage of trains. I only found out when I asked a station staff member that this was because lots of trains are being taken out of service to refurbish them. Just a shame this has not been explained to passengers who have no idea why these endless daily delays/problems are happening. If people knew why - they might not be so annoyed - but its still going to mean a sub par service for months!!

The Piccadilly line operates tripcock/trainstop signalling. The 1992 Stocks were delivered with tripcocks before ATO/ATP. I used to live on Heathstan Road in East Acton where the trains ran along the back of the gardens (sadly the housing blocks I once knew have since been demolished and rebuilt) I used to sit on the edge of the window in my bedroom and watch the trains go by. I lived on the second floor so had a decent view of the trains... the westbound trains ran on top of an embankment for the best view, the esstbound trains partly hidden as they entered the dip to criss cross under the westbound line heading towards White City. I still remember the sounds of the trains on the track there... Passing wesrbound trains produced a very unusual, non-symmetrical sound along the tracks given the axles would obviously be very symmetrical by design! Biggest memory was seeing the then-new 92 stock trains running with the older 62 stock trains. Very nostalgic but also sad that my favourite tube stock train at the time was being phased out. First of all, it still looks like the same height, and one of the common complaints about old central line trains is that it's too short for a lot of people. Second, apart from priority seating and space for wheelchairs and baby prams (which is great but also a standard?!), the seats look exactly the same except newer fabric. What about aircon or better ventilation? Central line is unimaginably hot and stuffy during summer, causing people to faint and fall ill. What is the point of these new trains if they can't resolve the major issues with the central line? Spending money for nothing. Even if it's not as noisy, it will be noisy when it pulls into the impossible curve that is Bank. The real test of how noisy or squeaky it is would be when these trains get into Bank 😂 all these stations you're riding have a straight track, of course it shouldn't be noisy if it's a new train. Also at 9:37, am I seeing graffiti already on the new carriage doors? Jokes. Finally, voice announcements on a train is a standard. Having a clear display of where the train is going, its final destination, what is the next stop etc - no upgrade on that then? This upgrade is so jokes, and how much is tfl spending on this? 😂😂😂

Where do we begin? I went to check out the 1992 prototypes (red, blue and green tube trains!) at Woodford (from memory). The lights had pierced metal covers that looked like handholds, so people could stick their hands through and straight into a fluorescent tube. The in-cabin bins (yes the prototypes had bins beside the doors) were not sealed so when we threw our paper coffee cups into them the remaining coffee dregs leaked out of all the panel seams. The surface mounted doors worried us as seeming very vulnerable to being torn off in the event of a derailment - a problem confirmed several months after launch when a Central line train derailed at Chancery Lane (from memory) and tore its doors off, etc. etc. I never liked the 1992 stock. Incidentally it looked as if the newly refurbished stock was graffitied and had faded roundel decals already - not a great start. I do like the new moquette, I just hope its is harder wearing than the S7/S8 moquette which has worn down to bear backing fabric already. I assume TfL are looking to keep the 1992 Stock for a while then if they're refurbishing them. Nothing wrong with that but I thought TfL were looking to standardize as much as possible and therefore replace the 1992 (as well as the 1995/1996) stock with trains similar to the forthcoming new Piccadilly Line ones, rather than go to the expense of refurbishment. Mind you, the D-Stock were expected to be around for a lot longer following their refurbs.....

I think the problems with the funding means that the original order has been swapped so that if TfL get enough funding for a second fleet of '24s, it's going to the Bakerloo first and not the Central as originally planned

NTfL on the Central, Bakerloo and Waterloo and City line are on hold for who knows how long because TfL don't have any money

@@chrisoddy8744 The Bakerloo makes far more sense in any case, the '72 stock feels like it's on more than it's last legs

@@hi-viztrue. In fact here in New York we have a similar situation where we are still using rolling stock from the 70s. The new rolling stock to replace those IS coming but at a slow rate. In fact only 6 of those are in service right now.

man its a real shame the new dot matrix displays block off part of the panoramic windows, that was one of my fav things about the '92 stock :(

Its good knowing the audio announcement is projected with a clear and concise voice. The one at Liverpool Street on the Circle Line has been changed to a woman who mumbles and is very hard to understand. They need to get Adrian to re-do the announcements.

Nooo! I liked the old female announcer voice. She was quite calming and soothing!

Grange Hill and Chigwell - two big TV show references. I can’t hear the first one without doing the theme tune opener. Nearly as bad as the Eastenders sting.

I'm probably a minority in this, but the refurbishment of these trains strikes me as terrible news for people taking the Central line. All the changes mentioned are nice but don't really tackle what is (in my opinion) the most fundamental problem: the unbearable heat that passengers are subjected to. This is not just uncomfortable, it is a serious risk to health and, during the worst days of summer, possibly life. The line desperately needs significant investment in new (air-conditioned) rolling stock and station/tunnel improvements to regulate temperatures, but this refurbishment has now made such investment virtually impossible, and has granted TFL a licence push back these changes for another 20 or 30 years.

The 1992 stock will be replaced by new Siemens trains that have AC, it’s supposed to be the same new trains bound for Piccadilly and Bakerloo

it just looks as good as 1996 stock interior

Enjoyed the video Geoff. Great to hear that they're quieter as they are deafening on certain parts of the line. The only disappointment is still no air conditioning. The thought that these trains will soldier on for another 20 or so years is terrible. The circle lines trains are in a different league. I liked the new clearer announcements too. Handy also for casual users to know which side the doors will be opening. Central line always appears to be the poor relation.

Depends which way you are standing what left and right means, so the announcements of which side the doors open makes no sense to me.

For 30 years old they aged quite well. And as a tall person - 2m02 - I appreciate the design of the curved windows :)

I was also thinking how well they’ve aged - 30 years is a long time! (and I remember riding them when they were new…)
@Peter-mj6lz Жыл бұрын
They have aged well in design but not structurally. It seems like trains from the 90’s in the uk are aging well design wise because that’s when design seems to have changed a lot but new trains design since then hasn’t changed too much.

Very irritating constant announcements (also on so many other sevices up and down the country). Years ago we seemed to manage allright; Perhaps we're just a bit more stupid than we used to be. Looks like some grafitti already at 9:47.

Definitely looks a lot fresher, the 1992 stock have long felt very different to anything else on the tube and a bit unloved.

I recently went to Wanstead on the central line. I love travelling on the sections of the tube that are overground. The refurbished trains look great. The only issue that I have with the tube as I'm getting older, is the gap between the platform and the entrance to the train carriage. I wonder are there any plans to try and somehow bridge the gap?
