It's spring 2021, and Covid-19 lockdown is here, which means I haven't been on a train since March 21st, which feels like forever!
But Govia Thameslink Railway invited me down to East Croydon to talk to their staff, and see what changes have been happening on the railway. So I got on my bike and cycled there.
My thanks to GTR, and those involved for helping me make this video.

You said last week that you'd like to go out visiting the railways. You also asked what we'd like to see. This was exactly what a few of us mentioned, so thank you. Thank you for doing what you do. Thank you for tirelessly being an advocate for trains and transit. Thank you for asking us to participate, inviting us in, and bringing this world to life. Thank you for putting faces and names on all the people that make the networks function, especially in these tough times. Lastly, thank you for giving us ways to escape, even for a few minutes at a time. To the trains!

Jonathan Douglas. I'll echo that Jonathan, well said. And well said and done Geoff, that was perfect. No great fanfare, just sincere thanks and respect. That was exactly right. And what a lovely lady? For the Station Manager at a station the size and importance of East Croydon, I was expecting a grumpy old man, not a bright, switched on, self assured young woman. And it didn't hurt that she was drop dead gorgeous too! I haven't commuted for many, many years and I've only used my car to take my dog for a walk on our favourite common, but I do use trains and buses and I miss them. I live just less than a mile from Streatham Common station and about a half mile from Eastfields (one of the newest and busiest stations on the network) so I can hear trains. When life is at its normal bustle, the sound of trains rarely breaks through, but in the last weeks, the sound of fast trains seems to have been more prevalent. Well done everyone for keeping them rolling. It is appreciated.

As a guard I used to love quiet trains. Now I'm desperate for some human interaction again! Can't remember the last time I sold a ticket. Even on the Morning Bristol to London services, the maximum I've had in one of my carriages is 7. Paddington is like a ghost town, even the mess room is split so we have to be 2 metres apart. Haven't been able to get my usual McMuffin breakfast for nearly 2 months it's been a lonely boring job these last couple of months

Very much the same for me. I used to love chatting to my regular passengers on the platforms. And working on a crowded platform kept it challenging, and providing customer service. Now there was almost no one on the platforms. Dispatching empty trains day in and day out, soul destroying...

Agreed. Quiet trains were something to look forward to at the end of the shift. Now I start to worry "what if these passengers never come back?", you start to think about your job and even the need for the whole infrastructure. I know I'm being a little hyperbolic, but I do worry.

As long as you can do the doors from the back. Having to plough through a packed train to work the doors is not so good, especially if passengers do not socially distance themselves. At the moment numbers are so low it is a non issue. Having commuted myself in the past I would have loved to work from home. I suspect far fewer people will use trains going forwards. Trains in North Yorkshire are expensive, infrequent and often cancelled anyway.

Hi Geoff, I hail from Singapore. 🇸🇬 1:55 My last bus and train ride was March 23 2020, when my former workplace introduced the work-from-home. It would be 60 days, as of 22 May 2020. Singapore started their lockdown from 7 April 2020. And social distancing on public transport was only enacted after a few letters to the press (including mine) were published. For me, as a particularly fond person of buses, I too am very sad at what the effects of coronavirus has done. 😢I've been fortunate enough that both my parents and I are at home. So I am usually using my father's car to get the groceries and takeaways. 2:45 This speaks so much to me... Because for me, travelling on a bus is a joy! My best friend, great friends, and my relatives can testify to that. I sometimes used to wait at the bus stations to spot buses, and I myself have filmed the buses I enjoyed riding (some trains too). And I miss my bus enthusiast and bus driver friends. I showed your video to my mother, and we think you're really awesome! You are one of the KZbin channels I admire a lot, so please do take care. Also we love Ramla! She's friendly and rockin'! ☺️ As of April, it is the law to wear a mask once you are outside your home with very little exceptions. Otherwise, you will get a S$300 fine (£173) for the first offence, and S$1000 (£576) for the subsequent. No warnings given. If you guys can, wear a mask no when you step out too! It will help flatten the curve! Stay strong! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Difficult times for one and all. Thanks for your dedication at the end of the video. The NHS and frontline have obviously taken the brunt, but there are many, many others, not immediately obvious, like railway staff, petrol station staff etc, all doing their unattractive bit to keep some sense of normality, and the rest of us may not say it, but we do appreciate it!

Thank you Geoff, this is very useful information. I hope the time passes quickly so that it doesn't feel like an age when you are allowed to get back on the trains. I enjoy watching your videos as much as you enjoy making them. I was slightly dismayed however about you not fastening your cycle helmet. I was hoping it might have been temporary for cinematic purposes so you could easily take it off for the shots but I suspect that wasn't the case. Far be it from me to tell you what/not to do but I would like to say that if it's not attached properly it doest work as well. I really like your videos so would like you to continue doing so and that might not happen if your hat falls off before your head hits something. Rant over. Wish you both very well. Geoff, since the weather has been so nice for yall lately. Why not do some segments on bike where you peruse the area around the stops (that you can readily get to)? Kind of like a "Day in the life of a commuter" type of thing??? Since traffic is lower, this might be a cool set of videos. Get up in the AM, have a coffee, jump on the bike and off to a station. Something like that?? Maybe have an interview at some other stations to get their input and thoughts on what is going on? Just some ideas because this video was brilliant. Really enjoyed it!!! I live in the US but my company is HQ'd in Farnborough so I have coworkers in FB and in Denton as well as in Dobrany in the Czech Republic as well as sales and service offices across the EU and obviously in the US. So, sending a shout out to the NHS as well as all the other critical support workers!! As well, a shout out to all my coworkers in FB, Denton and CZ who are still heading into the shop EVERY DAY to build critical machines for our customers and those in the offices who are making this all work from their new "home offices." I work for Loma Systems and we design and build inspection equipment for the food and pharmaceutical industry. We are critical infrastructure around the globe and I am proud to be a part of making sure the world has a safe and reliable food and pharmaceutical supply chain; ESPECIALLY NOW!!!!

thank you Geoff for this video. i too miss travelling on the trains. i also greatly miss london! you are right about how it can make us feel. my last journey was back from exeter through london to peterborough on the 18th March after i had to cut my holiday short to get home before lockdown. i also have took to my bicycle and found myself crossing railway bridges and level crossings on my daily exercise in the country around Peterborough to watch the trains pass through on the east coast mainline. your videos help me because i get to see some of london too although only virtually it is better than not at all. i travel with my ministry as a born again Christian and have many of my christian family across the nation, my son also lives in London. i hope that soon the rail network will open up again for leisure travel because for those without private transport it is restricting. i'm blessed that the fens are flat on my bike but there's only so far i can cycle in a day! so again, thank you for your video. i'm not going to say stay safe because that premises that the world is dangerous and it isn't - trust your God given immune system - i will say stay strong as you seem sad in this video. the new normal is so abnormal and it is very sad to see it in all walks of life! As a Ticket office clerk at Cambridge Station, I would like to thank you for helping out by posting this video. It's so important that people who do have to travel stick to the rules put in place to make travel at this time safe and smooth. Keep up the great work and we will see you soon out on the network!

In some respects one of your best ever videos, thought provoking and marks a time in our history where we can (hopefully) look back in 10 years and say ‘wow did we live through that?’ Echo your thoughts and well wishes to all those providing a fantastic transport service for not only our key workers but for everyone who needs it Thank you Geoff

Fantastic work as always Geoff. I totally know what you mean about going for a wonder on the network. I used to do that in London all the time and watching this has made feel homesick now that I don't live in the country. Stay safe!

My last train journey was between Dusseldorf and Cologne the last friday (march 13, 2020) before Germany did shutdown anything non essential and demanded to refrain from leisure journeys... It was just that day 10 years ago my mother passed away. I needed to get my mind clear that day. Little did I know that North-Rhine Westfalia would shutdown anything appart from essential journeys and adjust the timetables 4 days later...

Greetings from Cape Town, I have watched a few of your KZbin videos on London transport, I then accidentally found your USA cross country finding London tube names. They are very interesting with facts. Bought something close to my heart, that my brother and I would travel when we went to the states, and miss it now. Every chance I get, I love coming to London. Even though I am not a public transport person in South Africa due to many factors, I enjoy traveling on public transport whether in Athens, London, Paris, Istanbul or NYC. Thank you for giving tips on the London transport system...

bro i live in a city without a metro and with very poor public transportation, but im a big fan of it, everywhere. i love riding trains and knowing those geeky trivia facts about stops no one really knows or cares about. i havent traveled to a city where there is a working metro in about half a year so i kinda relate to what youre saying but better safe than sorry. greetings from Mexico!

I’ve not been on a train since March 11th. Luckily the situation in Finland is getting quite a lot better, so that might change soon. I don’t rely on trains for anything though, I ride the bus to school because it’s like 3 kilometers to my closest railway station. I did get trains every day back when I lived in Spain for 4 months. Those were excellent :D

Geoff, it looks like I may have to use trains one day next month. If my wife gets to return on a repatriation flight, she's going have to come into Heathrow and since there are no coaches running until at least July, we'll have to use the train (she won't get a train in the UK without me in case she falls asleep on it and misses her stop).

91 days without train traveling and counting.. Knowing I would normally travel mostly every weekend it's a real long time missing it. Fortunately I can still take train pictures by taking a car but this is a totally crazy time being I could never think about happening. Dutch goverment still doesn't want people to use trains for fun and I guess it's smart to respect that. Hopefully our world will get back to normal really soon. Thanks for making all those great videos!

Hello Geoff. I had been off public transit from mid-March 2020 until mid-July 2021. The city I live in has a really cool light rail line called ION that opened in 2019. I've missed it a lot during the last year and a half, but now thanks to vaccination, I can use it again to get around town. I will admit that before the pandemic, I used to just go ride ION just to get out of the house. Also, I enjoy reading a good book while riding. Cheers!

Chris Hart Hiya, I remember the station very well. On way home from a work meeting. It finished early, my ticket was off peak, so I had to pay extra at the ticket office. Unfortunately as I had to sort money, etc out I left my laptop at the ticket office. Got down to platform, nearly time for train arrival, I realised that one of my many bags was misssing...yup the laptop bag. Ran back to ticket office, to find that the railway police had it! 100% + embarrassment. They kindly gave it back once I could prove it actually was mine and in the process dropped all my paperwork all over the floor of the ticket office. My surname is Hartt! Now that’s spooky! Be safe and be well. ❤️🌈

I work as a tram driver in Prague, Czech Republic and driving an empty tram on empty streets has been just horrible. Somehow, it just sucked most of the joy off the job for me. Fortunately, things are getting back to normal again.
