A huge congrats Geoff. I honestly got emotional watching you receive this award. I am a Canadian who fell in love with the Underground when I first visited London in 1987. I havent visited since 2002, but your videos which I have watched (repeatedly) since 2013 are entertaining and informative. Congratulations! The Tube was still using these tunnels in the 1970's. I moved to London in 1973 and used that line until it closed before the link being made between Finsbury Park and Drayton Park for the new overhead/third rail service. I then used the new service from the day that it opened travelling from Harringey to Old Street daily. I last used this train yesterday, so I've used it for most of these 40 year old units lives. Looking forward to using the new rolling stock, though I doubt that I'll live to see the next incarnation in another 40 years time!

Firstly, congrats Geoff on the 100k subs! However, I'll be very surprised if this switch from old to new stock goes without major hitches. Be prepared for more of the "The next train has been cancelled due to a member of staff not being available" announcements!! (the lamest excuse in the history of lame excuses). I really really hope I'm proved wrong. On this line (I live in Hornsey) we deserve a franchise fit for purpose for the 20th century. Come on GTR - please get your act together! 5:18 "Part of the Northern Line until the 1950's". Isn't that supposed to be "common knowledge" (let alone professional knowledge) that it was part of the Northern until 1976 (as even the Moorgate tube crash occured there in 1975)
@Jeagles5 жыл бұрын
Strudlfaust true. The 313s were the first and only (before these new 717s) standard trains to go in the Moorgate tunnels
@DavidShepheard5 жыл бұрын
The Great Northern & City Line might have been run as part of the Northern Line, but the size of the tunnels are totally different. It's a real shame that the Northern Heights plan got scrapped: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_line#Great_Northern_&_City_Railway I'd like to see TfL have a *new* Northern Heights plan, with the underground stations on the Northern City Line all made longer and the Moorgate tunnels moved, so that the tunnels can extend south to Bank, Canon Street, across the Thames to London Bridge and off to somewhere useful in South East London.
@wangingtonwang79715 жыл бұрын
Torjuz1337 the driver was distressed that the northern heights plan was dropped 20 years earlier so crashed? I don’t get that one
@garyjeffery87145 жыл бұрын
It was always intended that Moorgate would be linked to Finsbury Park using tunnels that were bored to accommodate standard gauge trains. However, the branch was operated by London Underground using tube stock, instead and formed the City Branch of the Northern Line. As someone who lived in the Essex Road area, I was a frequent user of the tube from this station and can well remember the large stations from, what seemed, another era and the seemingly diminutive trains.The tunnels between Drayton Park and Finsbury Park were closed in the mid 60's as part of the Victorial Line works and the GN platforms were adopted for use by southbound Piccadilly/Victoria Line trains. The tunnel portals at Drayton Park were clearly visible from the station platforms for many years subsequently. The rest of the branch was temporarily closed in 1975 prior to intoduction of the Great Nothern Electric service in 1976. The re-opening of the branch and introduction of the new service finally brought about the original vision for the line - running trains from the City into the northern London suburbs.
@darrengomes22035 жыл бұрын
When it was originally constructed in the 1900s, the rail company that built it wanted to build a rail line that would come right into the City of London from Hertfordshire. They had a partnership with the LNER, or it's predecessor, to run services beyond Finsbury Park. But after the City of London objected to the plan to bring a large, although underground, station into the heart of the Square Mile (so the route was truncated at Moorgate), the other rail company backed out and it just became a short line between Finsbury Park to Moorgate, which then got taken over by the Metropolitan Railway. It then became a Metropolitan Line branch after 1933, with Metropolitan Line rail stock. It then got transferred to the Northern Line with the Northern Heights extension plan, with Standard Tube stock and that got swapped for 1938 stock before the line was transferred over to British Rail.
